Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is a solid direction for the series to make the already deep building elements as set dressing for a more narrative-focused Rune Factory experience. It can be jarring for long-time players of the series, though.

On the whole, Guardians of Azuma is a stellar experience on any platform, with the Switch 2 offering that extra touch of greatness. Those who are particularly sensitive to performance issues will find themselves in safer hands with the upgrade, so long as you're willing to pay an upcharge for the privilege.

It may not be the definitive version of Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, but its Switch 2 release brings enough visual polish and portability to keep Azuma dangerously hard to put down. Performance still isn’t flawless, and the $70 price tag stings a little compared to the PC version, but the upgraded resolution and mostly stable framerate are a welcome step up from the original Switch edition. If you’re willing to trade a few frames for the joy of farming, flirting, and dungeon crawling from your couch or your bed, it’s hard not to get hooked all over again.

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma confidently advances the life sim genre while still keeping one foot comfortably in the past. With streamlined farming and town management mechanics, deeper yet-still-accessible combat, and the usual great writing and character work, Guardians delivers a consistent good time for new and old players alike. This beautifully animated game is a great way to break in that Switch 2.

Even with no prior experience of the Rune Factory series, Guardians of Azuma is a relaxing blend of genres that works in part due to the wholesome nature of its cast and setting. It’s chicken soup on a rainy day - uncomplicated, but unmistakably enjoyable.

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma stands as one of the better life-sims out there, striking a good balance between the village, its people, and the outside world you can explore. The town-building elements make it really feel like you’re regrowing these places into prosperous societies, and it’s a lot of fun getting to know all of the colourful personalities that reside there. Combine that with simpler farming and a solid main narrative, and you have the perfect place for Rune Factory newcomers to start.

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma introduces unusually major changes to the Rune Factory series. At the same time, it keeps the core largely intact: you’re still doing mostly the same things as in previous titles, only this time most of the repetitive tasks are delegated to your villagers. As a result, the game can focus more on story, action, and adventure — and it works out well. It respects the player’s time better, and the improved combat systems and interesting environments do not disappoint. Not every Rune Factory fan will appreciate this direction, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s exactly what the series needed.
