Pokemon Legends: Z-A - Mega Dimension

While maybe not as spectacular as the main story, Pokémon Legends: Z-A Mega Dimensions adds loads of content and Pokémon to the game.

If you were already a fan of the base game, the Mega Dimension DLC’s offer of more side-mission escapades, Rogue Mega Pokemon battles, and story content should have you engaged for countless hours. However, if you’re already not keen on Z-A’s battle-centric approach, or you don’t have the time or patience for grinding, it’s unlikely to win you over.

I’m not sure which of the DLC campaigns for Pokemon we’ve gotten in the last 12 months I prefer, but they are similar. Both Mega Dimension and the Indigo Disk focus on double battles and high level combat plus bring in Pokemon that were hard-to-impossible to get on Switch before. Though I do like replaying the Indigo Disk, so the Z-A twist on the format is definitely worth grabbing after you’ve had your fill of the main game. Just remember to do all the sidequests first, since the first thing they advertised for Mega Dimension - the Mega Raichus - requires completing a side quest with another side quest as an unlock.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A — Mega Dimension is a nice little coda to the base game, both in terms of story and gameplay. It’s content with just being an infinite remix of what’s already there, being both just as fun and as frustrating as Z-A already was.

While it wasn’t the game I had thought to spend much of my winter holiday pursuing, Pokémon Legends Z-A turned out to be a pleasant romp, a delightful return to a part of the game world I hadn’t seen in over a decade, and the chance to learn many new and interesting words in French. I shan’t be delving too deep into the post-game or DLC, so others may touch on those as they wish. All I may say is that this was, in the end, a very welcome Christmas present.

If you enjoyed the base game like I did, the best bits of Pokémon Legends: Z-A are still present in Mega Dimension. The combat is still engaging, the characters you live and work with are still endearing, and the new Pokédex is fun to complete. This DLC, much like Z–A itself, feels like it will be a Marmite one.

Mega Dimension adds a lot of content for players who already enjoy Pokémon Legends: Z-A. There are more Pokémon to collect, new Mega Evolutions, and a boost in difficulty that keeps things challenging. Its story and setting don’t offer much that’s new, and many of the base game’s characters don’t get much time in the sun. For players who loved the original, there’s plenty here to enjoy and experiment with, but if the base game didn’t grab you, this DLC isn’t likely to change that.

The DLC, in more ways than one, completely distills the Pokémon Legends: Z-A experience, offering a structure and mechanics that lack the necessary elements to be engaging. By offering more of the same without any clear purpose beyond extending the time we spend with the game, we're left with a monotonous experience where progressing is a Herculean challenge.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Mega Dimension is a solid add-on, albeit costly, for fans of the core game looking for more, but it isn’t a must-play due to the repetition, grind, and price.

For what it is, Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Mega Dimension is a decent enough post-game content update that will give fans of the game even more reason to keep playing.

After spending dozens of hours on Pokémon Legends: Z-A, I had high hopes for this DLC. First of all, I expected it to try new things, to iron out the annoying little details I had noticed while playing the main game, but Mega Dimension chose to follow a completely different recipe... The ingredients are (too often) the same, the frustrating structure and the redundancy of the DLC leave a bitter taste in the mouth, even if a few fleeting moments of brilliance manage to surprise us. So, yes, there are some good ideas, but the Mega Dimension DLC was too timid with the seasoning, resulting in a superficial and rather bland dish. It's disappointing, especially when we were dreaming of sinking our teeth into a donut bursting with flavor. We console ourselves by saying that this meal is filling and will keep us going for a while (thanks to the post-game content and side quests), but it's not good enough to earn a Michelin star.

Mega Dimension is a DLC that brings some welcome new features to the game, such as a more demanding difficulty and new Mega Evolutions, as well as a plot that directly follows that of Pokémon Legends Z-A. Mega Dimension does not do so well on other fields, however, and very often the game feels repetitive when it comes to its overdone actions and settings, especially when it comes to the small dimension of its map. Mega Dimension is competent, but it adds more in quantity than in quality, and the price is too high for what it delivers.

This new DLC for Pokémon Legends Z-A is something of a double-edged sword. While it adds a wealth of new main and side missions, legendary Pokémons, and a strong cast of new characters that can keep players busy for hours, the bland new Hyperspace area and the excessive grinding required to unlock its missions ultimately drag down the experience.

Mega Dimension starts from a promising premise and succeeds in some legendary encounters and new Mega Evolutions. However, the DLC suffers from excessive repetition of mechanics, uninspired maps, and tiring missions. It’s not a bad experience, but it falls far short of justifying its price or matching the brilliance of the base game Legends Z-A.

There's plenty of fun to be had with Mega Dimension; the new sidequests are neat, the new Mega Evolutions are fun to play with, and even if I didn't gel with the story as much as the basegame I still had a good time with it. Yet, if you were already feeling burnt out by the time the original credits rolled - or are even just unsure if you're ready for more of the same - I can't exactly say if this DLC is worth the price of admission.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A - Mega Dimension offers a challenge for experienced trainers wanting to push those battle skills to the limits. Beyond level 100 critters for the first time? Check. It's tough and requires a fair bit of grind to get through the new Mega Evolution battles. Returning faces from the Pokédex and new forms are a joy to catch, too. Mega Dimension is ideal for battle enthusiasts and competitionists, but can fast become repetitive with little payoff to really keep pushing through once the favourites have been caught.

The mega evolutions and real-time battles continue to impress, but this expensive DLC is far too repetitive to be considered an essential purchase.

The core of Pokémon and the highs of Pokémon Legends: Z-A just about manage to shine through in the Mega Dimension DLC, but the repetitive Hyperspace dimensions, bland level design, and dull donut making stop this from being a true Mega Evolution for the game. If you’ve grown up with this series, you’ll find it hard to resist the lure of the expanded Pokédex and seeing your favourites almost looking their best is a joy. Repetition is not freeing, though, and as with the base game, I’m missing the freedom of the core series again.

Mega-Dimension is a DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A with good ideas and new Mega Evolutions, but it is weighed down by a weak story, content cut from the base game, and recycled environments.

Pokémon Legends ZA: Mega Dimension is priced too high for the content it delivers. While it has its redeemable moments, the experience is undermined by excessive grinding, repetitive tasks, and, most frustratingly, a severely time-limited exploration of its core new mechanic, the Mega Dimension. With little substantial content beyond some new Megas and returning Pokémon, this DLC ultimately falls short, especially when compared to the series' stronger expansions.

There's a lot to like here, and it runs great on Switch 2, but it also feels like the post-game content that should've just been in Legends: Z-A to begin with.
