Mario Kart World, the latest iteration of a decades-spanning franchise, has been winnowed into something smoothly efficient and entirely absent of blemishes. But these games are toys, things to boop and to beep, before putting them back down again.

Mario Kart World takes the series in a bold new direction that mostly pays off. Each of the tracks has been expertly designed, the new Trick mechanics make Mario Kart more fun than ever, and the soundtrack is almost unbelievable. Nintendo has established the bones of an outstanding product, yet the new intermission tracks and online functionality troubles hold it back from being what it could be.

Mario Kart World is an exciting racing game, especially online and in couch co-op. It's not the Nintendo's Forza Horizon though. We only got a mere substitute for it.

A lot of flash and some substance, it’s a very fun game in a package that doesn’t live up to its massive potential, much less the massive price tag it’s introduced to mainstream gaming.

Despite all the criticisms that have been made about its open world, Mario Kart World remains a leading social game and still knows how to easily bring players from all walks of life into its wake. The more fortunate will even indulge in the luxury of the camera that allows you to display your friend's face in a vignette when he overtakes you for maximum provocation. Despite its flaws, we are still on a sure bet that will occupy many evenings and we trust Nintendo to offer it a follow-up worthy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Mario Kart World stands in stark contrast to the original Switch’s franchise re-evaluation, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Where Link’s first foray into true open world design made for a generation-defining experience, Mario Kart World’s shift is uneven and chaotic, often producing frustrations alongside innovation and fun. A massive leap in fidelity and a lengthy development cycle have shaped a gorgeously realised world and roster of racers to barrel down impressive tracks with a small bag of new tricks. But the time spent between these breathless bouts is unrefined and clumsy, a world built for a console’s lifetime worth of updates that, for now, offers you little more than a freshly paved highway to nowhere. Mind the toll.

Mario Kart Worlds is a fantastic evolution of Mario Kart's DNA. The open world works perfectly with the traditional and chaotic races, and it has one of the best circuit designs and OST in Mario Kart's saga.

Those nitpicks aside, Free Roam mode is what I'd consider the best realization of Mario Kart World's open-world ambitions. The more traditional racing modes can be too frantic and time-sensitive to let you enjoy the obvious care and attention to detail that has gone into building out the world around Mario Kart's racing tracks. And while racing around those tracks feels as satisfying as ever, this time around, the game's structure tends to get in the way of that satisfying core experience.

Maybe Nintendo had the right idea: Why drive to the next race when the drive there can be the race? Why make the distance between players and this joyous game any more than a single, swift, satisfying button-click? That’s classic Mario Kart, and Mario Kart World is nothing if not a classic Mario Kart game. If the integrity and scope of its open-world ambition have to be sacrificed to stay true to the Mario Kart creed, then it’s a price worth paying.

Mario Kart 8 was such a high bar that Nintendo couldn’t simply do that again. Instead, the game’s designers created something much more interesting: a place that feels vibrant and alive. Now you just have to race through it.

Mario Kart World is the pinnacle of the series. From the detail in the open world, to the expansion of races and the resulting chaos and more, there is something for every level of gamer. For people like me who are really into the back-and-forth with other racers, the game gives you the tools to find the best lines and tricks to maximize your times. If you’re new and just want to enjoy it, you can do just that. If this game gets supported the way MK8 Deluxe did, we’re in for an even bigger treat. [Best In Its Class]
