This is classic Sonic, and not his greatest outing however, Sonic's flexing of speed for years now is pretty insanely underused for a game entirely advertised for it. Only a few levels, Green Hill, Spring Yard, Star Light, actually use this aspect, the rest are slowed down but pretty terrible water sequences that slow you down terribly and have some annoying spike and enemy placement in Labyrinth Zone, and levels dragged out by being extremely slow and having a lot of waiting. Another issue is Sonic's placement in the dead center of the screen, when you actually speed up, you'll be greeted with some terrible enemy obstructing your playtime. Besides these annoyances, the game is good, the graphics are pretty and each area is memorable, although not as much as 2/3/CD/Knuckles, and the music, as with every game, is tons memorable and uses the great Genesis sound font. At least this port gives you saves as well, without them you'd have to start from the beginning unless you memorized a button combo, which also helps this otherwise just decent game. It's appreciable and worth it for the shallow price. Expand

Sure, some mechanics like the spindash are really missed (corrected in the remasters). Some stages like Labyrinth Zone annoy me aThis was where everything began. Some stages like Labyrinth Zone annoy me a lot, but do not obfuscate some amazing others like Green Hill Zone, Star Light Zone or Scrap Brain Zone. Expand

While Sonic has gotten better in later instalments, Sonic's first ever game is still engaging and has aged sensationally.
