To be fair, SMT IF... didn't age that well but still holds as a pretty satisfying game to play on an emulator/phone. I'll just summarize this by points.
Pros:
- The esthetics for a SNES game isn't bad considering how old it is. The graphics hold decently and I like the sprites and backgrounds.
- The SMT gameplay is still there. Demon fusing and negotiation.
- The combat is simple and barebones but it's still addictive.
- The soundtrack is surprisingly good.
- Death doesn't really matter. I actually liked this a lot. If not for this mechanic I would have rage quitted even before I got to the first dungeon. This is actually the game's redeeming point. Without this, it would easily be a 4/10 for me. Or even lower.
- Replayability. Apparently there's a secret route you unlock after beating the game. I don't know how willing I will be to actually play it though.
Mixed:
- The dungeons are nothing special conceptually.
- The story and characters aren't that good. The game is short so at the end of the day, it doesn't matter that much. The plot is super straight-forward and you just roll with it.
Cons:
- The encounter rate is extremely inconsistent. Sometimes you'll find a horde of demons every 2 steps, sometimes when you actually want to grind or recruit new demons it takes about 10 - 15 steps. it's just annoying.
- You always run out of combat resources too fast. Demons just die too fast, your party runs out of mana equally fast. But then you try to fight the enemies with physical attacks but deal no dmg at all.
- The enemies are way too punishing and there are always tons of them and you're pretty weak.
And that's it. If you're not a butt-hurt member of the very childish Persona/SMT community (yes, not only the Persona community sucks, SMT community is composed of salty man-child too) you should give this a try. It's not very fun and it gets a little 'grindy' if you want to get anywhere but when you actually beat a dungeon and move on it feels satisfying. The game feels pretty unfair at times but you have infinite lives and don't lose anything when you die. It feels different, it has a cool soundtrack and while the story and gameplay aged quite a bit, I still recommend this one.… Expand
