    One of the most interesting and fresh puzzles we've seen lately for these devices. It may look simple, but it gets harder and harder, and mastering it will take us a while.

    Even with the difficulty Rise of the Blobs is still plenty of fun. So much so that losing typically ends up being just another excuse to play again. Or maybe get Mal a new hat.

    Variety comes in the great mix of play styles (marathon, timed, etc.) and stages, each of whom bring new types of fruit with different entertaining abilities. All told, however, Rise of the Blobs is about the constant pursuit of that satisfying burst of fruit. Like Jell-O.

    In a sea of matching games, few feel simultaneously as rewarding and as respectful of a player's skill as Rise of the Blobs. It may be soft and jiggly on the outside, but it's hard as nails underneath.

    In a genre where almost everything seems to have been invented already, Rise of the Blobs manages to introduce a refreshing puzzle game concept even though it's reminiscent of things like Tetris and Puyo Puyo. And it's free.

    We found the game's performance stuttered a little on our second-generation iPad, but it has its charms nevertheless - just don't expect to take on the global leaderboards without buying yourself a competitive edge.
