If you wanted to pick fault with this, it would be a lack of any kind of single-player campaign. But that's a nice to have, an extra feather in the hats of the creme de la creme of mobile adaptations like Galaxy Trucker. It isn't necessary in an economic game like this. And however you feel about economic games - and player interaction - this version of Race of the Galaxy is good enough to be worth your cosmic dollars.

One of the benefits of the Race for the Galaxy app is the AI. It's not just any old bot, it's a project developed by "AI Expert" Keldon Jones, and learns from player wins and from experimentation. It weighs all of that data through tens of thousands of games, and then acts accordingly. It makes even the easy bots challenging, and it's perfect for honing your skill at any level if you don't have anyone to play with.

I don’t understand why it’s so difficult for digital board game conversions to get tutorials right, but it’s a common problem that Race for the Galaxy unfortunately hasn’t avoided. Also tiny text. Still, once you (eventually) figure out and get used to the icons, as well as the various types of strategies, it really is a great game. I really do wish it was more welcoming to new and out of practice players, though.

This has quickly become my absolute favorite board game on the iPad. From the mechanic it's similar to "San Juan" (use cards to buy planets and develop) and "Puerto Rico" (game phases, development bonus). I like it that different winning strategies are possible and depending on the starting planet and the cards you get you need to be flexible. No game is like the other.

At first glance the GUI might be confusing but after a couple of games it starts to make sense. It also takes a while to understand how the economy part works. For instance, production alone is useless unless you have "consumers" that allow you to generate victory points.

The "Gathering Storm" extension is a must. It adds more cards, a drafting mechanism for 2 player games and it comes with "goals". This adds another layer to the game.

    PRO:
    - Fantastic board game with high replay value. No game is like the other.
    - Awesome theme. At the end of a game you can look at the board and the cards will tell an interesting story.
    - Very good AI. On hard it gives me a run for the money.

    CON:
    - Steep learning curve: you have to learn what the icons mean and how the game works. The tutorial helps a bit but it's better to head over to BoardGameGeeks and print out the single-page overviews.
    - Rules are not enough explained. The tutorials will only help to get started.
    - Price

Highly recommended for everyone who loves board games!
