Mines of Mars is in truth a simple platformer with basic mining and crafting mechanics. However, the story, wonderful atmosphere and genuine surprises suck you in. Before you know it, you’re role-playing well beyond the facade of a simple 2D platformer. [Episode 3, April 2014]

Ultimately, Mines of Mars provides an experience that expands well beyond the average iOS title that is almost on par with the higher end of indie, PC gaming quality.

The folks at Wicky Ware have done just that, with Mines of Mars being a highly enjoyable melding of exploration and combat wrapped around a side-scrolling mining adventure.

It demands patience, and I'm not a huge fan of the"mine it/craft it" style of game to begin with, but Mines of Mars has me, if not hooked, then at least giving serious thought to lunging for the worm. The rough edges are irksome but not insurmountable, and in a way they're also a testament to the overall quality of the game: I wouldn't be so bothered by it if Mines of Mars as a whole wasn't so good, and so close to being great.

Mines of Mars doesn't give you a lot to play with, but it gives you a really intriguing sandbox for you to do it in.

Mines of Mars puts a cool building and crafting spin on the side-scrolling action genre, though its fun is whittled down a bit by control issues and minor bugs.
