Journey to the age of Monster Manuals and D20s with Knights of Pen & Paper, a loving spoof of classic, 8-bit RPGs.

If you're an RPG fan of any kind, you'll love Knights of Pen & Paper. It's one of those rare cases where an offbeat premise is executed with such winning aplomb you can't help but get sucked in.

As Martha Stewart might say if she was into D&D in her younger days, that's a good thing dungeon master.

Even without the homage to pen and paper nerdery Knights of Pen and Paper is a fantastic semi-self driven RPG adventure. It's clever, charming, customizable, and virtually infinitely replayable.

The charm of this pixel adventure won me over fast. While it is a brilliant idea to stage it like a theatre with the party sitting at the table with the dungeon master, the role-playing reminds of the good ole days.

Retro games have been a popular niche market for a while now, and they exist in a whole spectrum from goofy parody to heart-attack serious. And yet Knights of Pen & Paper somehow manages to find a slot in that spectrum that hasn't been filled yet: the fairly humorous take on tabletop gaming.

The world map is vast, if loaded with the occasional grindy quest. [Feb 2013, p.93]

Knights of Pen & Paper is a tribute to pen & paper role-playing.

Knights of Pen & Paper is a lovely tribute to D&D and RuneQuest, with a nice sense of humour and good pixel art. Its IAP system doesn't spoil the balance of the game, though it requires a little bit of grinding.

Even when its story temporarily devolves into a series of extremely dull fetch quests, it's kind of a blast. For a game about such a particular hobby, it does a good job of being a crowd pleaser with well-designed RPG elements and odd little sim touches.

A retro pixel RPG of old, complete with grind heavy mechanics and an undeniable charm.

As a JRPG style experience with some callbacks to Dungeons and Dragons, Knights of Pen and Paper excels. Just don't expect the full pen and paper experience.

Knights of Pen and Paper is being praised as a pocket sized Dungeons & Dragons-simulator. Because of the indie-spirit, many geeky references and addicting gameplay you might actually start to believe it. But then you’d be fooling yourself and you’re missing the essence of role playing games. This is a grinding simulator, not a night of D&D.

Remember sitting down at a tableThis game is really good: The advice from TA would improve the game, but its is still very fun. Nostalgic. Remember sitting down at a table and having a dungeon master tell you the quests you are going on? Not only does it bring that back but it also helps you visualize the scenario as you enter the cave of spite or whatever and battle monsters and scorpions. I actually believe improved graphics would make this game more fun. its funny as hell, but I think this game would also do very well if it took itself seriously, yet keep the jokes...thats hard to explain, but has something to do with improved animation, losing the pixely graphics, more involved story, but don't lose the humor. The script could be improved. Better quests, better, more involved, main story line. It gets a 10 for me b/c its so unique in its genre...although its an RPG its an RPG within and RPG sort of... and its just a really good time. UPDATE: the expansions were not really good, and part two kind of OVER made fun of the genre that people loved in order to check out the game in the first place. Don't get part 2, demand a better, more complex and involved part 3. Full Review »

Knights of Pnp is basically one of the best DnD games you could buy for your cell phone. The game is all in 16 -bit and the songs are very old school compared to the two games I referenced earlier. The gameplay is really good and if you hate rpgs don't even bother trying this game. You have the choice of five or so characters that you can give a class to. There are many different classes like the mage and a warrior but there are also some secret classes like bard and other random classes that are just as fun to use. There are four main attacks in which you can use there experience points to increase there damage points and other cool abilities. The game is very long and I have only beating the main story line. If your looking for a new rpg and are looking for a great time killer this it the game made for for. Also just as a little of an incentive to play this game, there are a lot of game references in it and if you buy the +1 pack you get an after story and bonus quest that will take you hours to complete.
