    The new Karateka legitimately feels like it might be what Mechner's original idea would have been, if then were now. And that's a win. For those who remember the original, the new Karateka must not be missed.

    Don't let the gorgeously stunning art style fool you either, because it actually manages to play EVEN BETTER than it looks.

    What's more, some players might find the game runs choppily on any iOS device that's not equipped with up-to-the-second hardware. It runs well on the iPhone 5, but there have been complaints of choppiness on the iPad 2, and it won't run at all on any iPhone that's older than a 4S. None of this is very surprising, as Karateka is one fine-looking game thanks to its smooth animations and gorgeous backgrounds.

    Karateka fails to excite as it expects players to enjoy short and repetitive bouts of tapping without any real input in to the outcome of each fight beyond their skill at 'timing' - you could save Mariko three times, but saving her once proves to be once too many times already.

    Karateka looks great, but the simple timing-based combat is too dull and repetitive to warrant a purchase.

    A pretty atmosphere and reliance on nostalgia don't make up for the simple gameplay, low amount of content, and buggy nature of this release.
