Grindstone is an excellent puzzle game, one of the best ever on mobile devices: it's stylish, fun and challenging.

In all, Grindstone is a very satisfying matching puzzler with an equally satisfying price. I do have my suspicions that the novelty of getting what is essentially an extremely free-to-play game but with all the predatory aspects removed might be coloring my perception and making me think it’s more compelling than it really is. Maybe in an alternative universe where the word “freemium” never existed and this exact game cost $5 I wouldn’t find it particularly special. But we don’t live in that world, and it’s hard to argue that the game doesn’t look cool and play really well. And it’s certainly very fun, with an insane number of stages to play through. If you’re craving one of these gem-matching puzzle games but tend to shy away from free-to-play stuff, I think you’ve found your new addiction in Grindstone.

Throughout there is a sense of a studio that, after its arduous struggles with "Below", has remembered how to have fun again. The feeling is mutual. [Issue#338, p.102]

Grindstone is a simple, effective, and addictive mobile game that does just about everything right. I’ve been playing it for over a month, and there are no sign of it getting old. If you’re someone who rides a bus to work or otherwise has regular downtime, Grindstone should grab a place on your home screen.

Even with those quibbles, I adore this game. Grindstone's tactical color-matching conceit is one of the most satisfying puzzle game mechanics in recent memory. I'm hopelessly hooked, and I regret nothing.

Grindstone is a brilliant composition of all the elements that should turn a mobile puzzle game into a great video game, in general, capable of captivating all types of audiences. First, by how it comes off the most stifling and uncomfortable practices with the player; second, because its translation to consoles has materialized satisfactorily. Either with touch control or through buttons, Capybara Games rewards risk, adds challenge as we progress and gives personality to each situation, each enemy and each boss. Grindstone is the perfect example of what we tend to call "gamefeel".

Capybara Games makes a triumphant return to colour-matching with this gratifying, tactical splatterfest. [Eurogamer Essential]

Grindstone is a wonderfully effective time waster, requiring brains without overwhelming me with rules or gotchas. My worst enemy is never one of the well-drawn creatures on the screen, but is instead my own desire for just a little bit more.

The puzzles are interesting and feel really good to get a massive chain on but the real reasons to play this game are the art and the music. Both have a very fun kinda cal arts hipster aesthetic and counterbalance all the violence really well. Not through the whole thing yet so I’m not sure how well it holds up after playing for weeks but so far it’s great! Full Review »
