There's a strong sense of deja vu here if you've been playing along with the recent Tank Battle releases, but while Frontline covers a lot of similar ground, it still manages to offer some cool elements of its own.

Smoothly accessible and highly engaging strategy gaming, but lacks some key features.

Frontline: Road to Moscow won’t win any prizes for originality, and it’s not quite in the same league as genre heavyweights such as Battle Academy or Unity of Command.

To begin with, it pretends to be a strategic-level game, played on large-scale operational maps covering the relevant bits of Russia. But the actual game mechanics are tactical in nature - so you get hits deflected by armor, units taking cover behind other units, and other things inappropriate for an operational-level game.

Then much of the combat is counter-intuitive or just appears fairly random. Katyusha rockets obliterating entire German panzer units with a single shot. German infantry with AT rockets (in 1941?) being the most effective unit against russian tanks.

Then there's the plain silly stuff, like two air missions that are just a matter of moving your units forward and shooting to win, no strategy or challenge involved. Actually, that's what most of the scenarios boil down to.

If you're looking for a "panzer korps" experience on the iphone, this isn't it.
