Still, Don't Starve is a one of a kind experience that manages to marry survival mechanics that so many games have done before it, with a cartoonish, Tim Burton-esque charm. Once you've embarked upon a dozen runs or so the game runs like clockwork, and even the touch controls fall into place.

When it comes to gameplay, there are two noticeable improvements in Don’t Starve: Shipwrecked over Pocket Edition. The switch to strictly touch-controlled movement is more straight-forward, while the accuracy of lighting changes between night and day has also improved noticeably. This being said, there were a few instances of ‘random death’ (no creatures in sight, not hungry, sane, etc.) and night-time creatures appearing during the day, but overall they didn’t affect the enjoyment of the game too badly.

Punishing yet charming, this Tim Burton-esque world of exploration and terror will hook new players and old.

Don't Starve: Shipwrecked is worth checking out if you like the kind of gameplay that the Don't Starve series offers. This entry does a few new things, but not quite enough to feel like it will win over too many new fans. For me, I respect these games and can have a decent time with them from time to time, but the prospect of restarting on every death fills me with a kind of dread that pushes me away from diving back in.
