The game isn't quite perfect, but it still comes really close. Now we just need to cross our fingers and hope Super C(ontra) receives the same treatment.

For iOS gamers from the NES era, though, Contra: Evolution is a must-download, even if just to see how a treasured classic looks and sounds when brought into the modern era.

While not perfect, Contra: Evolution is a very solid and shiny port of the NES classic.

Contra: Evolution is a fine game. Not a “fine port”, or a “fine remake”, but a fine game.

Contra: Evolution looks great, plays well enough, and offers a few surprises. The only thing missing is the Konami code.

Contra Evolution is exactly that. It is an evolution of the classic with some updated graphics and some tweaks to the controls. Contra Evolution is a solid retread of a classic that adds a couple new features to keep the things interesting. But the somewhat tricky controls hold it back from being absolutely perfect.

Contra: Evolution looks better than the original arcade game, but it's hampered with inadequate controls.

We expected more from Konami given the weight of the franchise, but for now, this'll do.

Contra: Evolution is based on the classic, but the “Evolution” enhancements aren’t necessarily good things. The entire experience feels muted kind of stuck in between the past and present, and failing to deliver the best parts of either.

Want to play Contra the way it's meant to be played? Get an original Nintendo.

To the game's credit, the new visual style is the best that the original Contra has ever looked. Had Contra: Evolution been released as a downloadable game on a console or handheld with proper buttons, it might actually be a decent game. But Contra: Evolution is not a decent game. It isn't even close.

With several game modes and plenty of reasons to keep coming back, not even the evils of the free-to-play model (in-app purchases) keep this one down. Whether you're a Contra fan or just someone looking for a fun game for their mobile device, this is one you should definitely pick up. Full Review »

It definitely isn't the best of the Contra series, but is still pretty good and probably one of the best iOS games I've played.

It definitely isn't the best of the Contra series, but is still pretty good and probably one of the best iOS games I've played. The kind of modernized the classic elements of the older Contra games, but still kept the same gameplay mechanics. So, it's basically like any other Contra game just redone for iOS, which I like, because now I can play HD Contra on the go. One thing I would've loved is a online multiplayer where you could play with your friends over game center, hopefully they will add it in a future update.
