The game is very repetitive. The camera is not great, it can frequently get lost behind objects. The worst part is being kicked out of levels and having to travel all the way back to them, not just start the level again, when you lose a life. There are also some parts of the game that are far to difficult to be any fun. I will not be recommending it, nor ever playing it again.

My second favorite Mario game after 64 and a worth successor, The mechanics with "Flood" are fun, difficulty is good and the amount of shine sprites is huge too! i Got no idea why this game was not very popular back then.

I even like this one a bit more than Odyssey. My score is 91 - 100.

In my opinion, the best Mario game, I love the tropical atmosphere of this game, and the addition of F.L.U.U.D was amazing. It's very satisfying to use it. The game's camera is good, the controls are good, and the soundtrack is, in my opinion, the best soundtrack ever made in gaming history. It's a shame that the game was released for such a failed console like the Nintendo GameCube.

The boss fights are creative and the control is best out of any Mario game. FLUDD allows for so much diverse movement and the final boss fight where you first treverse through corona mountain and fight Bowser and Bowser Jr. is pretty cool. And the graphics and voice acting is so good. 10/10

This is a great game overall but lacks polish and is a step or two down from the typical Mario game’s quality, let alone 3D Mario. Satisfaction in the game is everywhere. The aesthetics are top tier. The water graphics ace the test!! The menu sounds and little things like that also show for great presentation. This might be my favorite Mario theme.

The gameplay is still good, but there is noticeable movement jank. The GameCube controller's deep sinking triggers satisfyingly shoot water from the new FLUDD, eliminating most crouch moves from SM64 but elevating everything else (sans punching/kicking). The stick flicks great for reliable side jumps, twirls clean for the trickier spin jump, and the C-stick grants more flow to camera control. The now gone long jump is made up for by the belly slide jump, no longer being able to directly wall jump out of it. Using FLUDD to prime your belly slide feels great, but you can’t hover nozzle out of it. Larger jumps may be harder to aim so the Hover Nozzle over corrects, but you’re going to end up relying on it because of imprecise platforming. It moves rough for long distances. When you hover at a ledge, grabbing it after is inconsistent and not snappy. Even when you teeter on an edge, it is inconsistent whether you will drop to the ledge or fall off entirely. The Turbo and Rocket Nozzles are cool one note powerups that end up feeling underused, like Yoshi. The Blooper racing is very similar to Turbo but if you hit anything, you lose a life. You can’t slow down or even get off by yourself once you get on. Ironically, the least fluid movement in the game is the swimming. You go too far with each stroke and underwater segments have tank controls. This feels worse than in SM64. There is a fine smoothness to the controls that outweighs the flaws, with quenching animations, but the jank adds up over time, blooming especially in level design.

There’s wonderful free movement in these open spaces until the camera gets stuck (no option to invert it). Despite water being a key theme, most missions don’t engage with large bodies of water enough to constitute as 'water levels'; it’s just the safety net from platforming. It's 3D Mario so all the levels are pretty good. They finely compliment the generally smooth movement. There are a lot of options to get off the beaten path, not just being 'easier' shortcuts but fun alternatives. The earlier levels noticeably have higher quality. 'Delfino Plaza', the hub world, is the most fleshed out "level" in the game! All the powerups, including Yoshi, are the most fun and useful here; Shines are hidden well and mostly out of order; Blue Coins have good distribution. The major downsides are the sub levels, like Pachinko and Lily Pads. All levels have a sub level without FLUDD, inconsistent with the main game, that showcase the lack of precision jumping Mario has, sourcing the difficulty. Most, if not all of these missions self-awarely have accessible 1 Up Mushrooms early on. Many of these are mandatory, too, so there’s no escaping the bad game design.

There’s a lot of fun new toys, like the hyper responsive bungee wires. But then we have broken toys like boats and Chucksters. Even other optional missions, like Lily Pads and melon rolling, seem luck based with horrid physics, as if getting good at the game doesn’t apply. We also have literal casino slots. Also, there are friendly NPCs in all levels, adding hints if you’re stuck on a mission and adding to a lovely vacation feel. Thing is, you have to do one mission at a time in strict order, requiring you to slog through the many below-average missions. There’s barely room to skip around as the first seven missions of all levels MUST be completed.

The game is not worth completing 100%. However, the presentation admittedly counters a lot of the jank for me. Blue coins are cool as 1/10th of a Shine and non-level-locked, but their distribution is not worth exploring for. Also, there is no good coin counter if you already cashed some in, so try not to do that either until you get all 240. While the game has significant jank and noticeable room for improvement, the smoothness that it does have alongside the feeling of warm sunshine overpowers it greatly.

‘Bowser’s Fury’ also uses Shines but is “open-world”, untypical of the 3D Mario being “open-level” (“open-worldS”?). Levels in ‘Sunshine’ are viewable in backgrounds of other levels and it’s unsatisfying to Turbo into an invisible wall from 'Plaza' to the 'Airstrip'. Becoming open world with lessons learned from ‘Odyssey’ (checkpoints, continuous Stars, auto saves) would be enough quality-of-life fixes to potentially make 'Sunshine' the best 3D Mario game. Fans have been optimizing the game longer than Nintendo (check out 'Sunburn')! Heck, I played this in 60fps on a WiiU.

I honestly do not know what Nintendo was thinking while making this game because it puts Mario in a situation that no thinking person will ever see as fun. The game starts with Mario being wrongfully accused, and then is sentenced to community service that consists of almost entirely of cleaning up gunk and graffiti. (Does this sound like a game you would like to play?) It gets worse. You have a talking water pack called FLUDD, and Mario is absolutely useless without it, and the courses are just bland tropical regions filled with gunk.

Contrast that to Super Mario 64 that took you through ice, fields, caves, lava, sand, inside a clock, and up in the sky besides just water, and you have no attachments that make you useless without them.

The soundtrack pales in comparison to Super Mario 64 too. Super Mario 64 established some of the greatest pieces of music in the entire series to this day. Sunshine’s soundtrack becomes grating extremely fast when you spend most of the time cleaning up the same gunk in the same places over and over again.

There was one genuinely funny thing in this game though, but I did not catch it until well after I gave away the game. The Sirena Beach stage when viewed from above has the hotel’s beach patio arranged in the shape of a Game Cube Controller, and the hotel is in the shape of the Game Cube console. Fitting when Super Mario Sunshine is a Game Cube game.

As for the level design, it's a mixed bag. While levels like blonco hills is fun, then there are levels where the game really shows it's problems... especially in it's secret levels. Like the alex kidd remake, the levels are very unpolished. Like you slip off the platforms easily. It also doesn't help that sometimes the camera messes you up too like the area cant have alot of stuff by you because otherwise the things like the walls will block your view. I also hate how hard the game in general is like especially the watermelon level. Other levels are hard too like some of the later secret levels, the sand bird, and the surfing level where you have to jump to get the shine sprite. The game is a mario game for god's sake and I'm not saying that mario games can't have challenge as I grew up with games like the nes mario games and world. The difficulty is nght and day between this and new super mario bros. It's like Nintendo knew they messed up. I wanted the game as a kid but I bet if I got it, the gamecube would've been broken from rage lol. However with that being said, I also like how the game had a good story for a mario game as the last two mario games was litterally just "bowser kidnaps peach and does a few other minor things." This game actually introduces one of my favorite mario characters, bowser jr and sit was funny how he seemed to be similar to shadow from the sonic series with everyone mistaking him for mario but he turned out to be a childish incompetent antagonist. I never beat the game without help on some levels but overall, it's my least favorite mario game but it's decent as a game itself. Expand

Every level in this game is very unique including Sirena Beach in a hotel, Pinna Park at an amusement park, and so much more! I love how they decided to go with one theme throughout the whole game and get creative with it, especially a vacation theme since I’m a huge fan of summer. The controls are smooth, and the main gameplay mechanic, the FLUDD, worked very well. It can even help you recover from badly timed jumps (the hover nozzle). The rocket and turbo nozzles are cool too, giving you a big boost either vertically or horizontally. The blue coins are a neat addition. I know people have complained about them but they add more to do which I like, some are hidden in the hardest spots where you wouldn’t even think of looking for them. The graphics were stunning at the time, and everything looks so beautiful, just look at Noki Bay! There are some memorable tunes in the soundtrack, including the bonus level theme which is infectious. The game gets more difficult as it goes on, and there is one level, the lily pad ride, which is absolutely notorious. I really love this game and it deserves far more credit than it gets! Expand

Easily the best 3D Mario game I played. Mario 64 didn't age too well for me and Odyseyy is too easy and too short. This game is actually hard and fun to play. The levels are so creative and multi-layer. Surely a timeless game. if the control is better and has some bug fixes. it's a 10/10

This is honestly my favorite 3D Mario game, next to Super Mario Galaxy 2.
In a genre that is all about movement, this one has the most maneuverability, and manages to turn an iffy idea into pure fun. The only downside to the whole game is that you have to replay multiple versions of the same level to get everything (8 main stars per level), but on the upside, they are very memorable

Mario Sunshine is one of my favorite Mario games. I feel like it gets a lot of hate because it’s misunderstood. It’s definitely harder than other 3D games like Galaxy or Odyssey, but that’s part of its charm. The levels are really well designed and the visuals are pretty and colorful. This game truly makes you feel like you’re on vacation on a tropical island.

In spite of it's short comings this game still managed to bring me a lot of Joy. I played it on Gamecube but never finished it, and have recently 100% it on the Switch. I can only imagine what this project would have been if Nintendo did not rush it - I'm sure I'd have given it 10 stars.

I liked the game, sometimes it is not possible to understand clearly, the bosses are even easy, when the water runs out you can recover it, but still, in some moments it is impossible to perform this action. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely loved this game as a kid, but it was too hard for me to power my way through. Unlike Zelda games of the era, it required more finesse to master. Even if you knew the solution to the occasional platforming puzzle, you still had to muster the skill to overcome the challenge. Even now, a good deal of it is difficult. I only recently beat it for the first time with the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection.

On the GameCube, the camera and Fludd controls weren't an issue for me as a kid, but it's hard to revisit since they're inverted. There isn't an option to un-invert these controls, so I had to wait until 3D All-Stars before I really gave this another go. Still, even when the camera controls are fixed, the camera oftentimes gets stuck on or behind walls. It's a major improvement in that department over Super Mario 64, but there are still issues.

Playing it now, I see why it's considered a sort of black sheep of the Mario family. The oddities of the levels aren't anything new, but there's a surprising lack of visual variety. Each stage is just a part of the tropical Isle Delfino. Maybe it's a beach or harbor or amusement park or village, but they're all of the same tropical local. This didn't bug me much - I thought it all looked gorgeous - BUT I understand why Mario fans were let down by it.

Moreso than aesthetics, there's also the matter of super annoying challenges. Most stages feature what I feel are some of the best examples of platforming challenges you can find in games, period. However, there are some stages that are so mind-bogglingly frustrating, it's like they're trolling you. There's a stage where you have to push a gigantic watermelon across the level, but if it touches anything with too much force or is tossed into the air by one of the dozens of ducklike monsters waddling about along the way, you gotta start all over. Then there's this ridiculous pachinko level. And don't even get me started on the 'poisonous lily pad' level or what it takes to get there.

The story is also pretty bizarre. Essentially, as soon as he arrives to Isle Delfino on vacation, Mario is arrested and falsely charged with polluting the whole island, and will only be released after he's cleaned up the whole place. The real culprit is a mysterious doppelganger, called Shadow
Mario, who leaves behind puddles of muddy paint and graffiti. There are also a variety of polluting monsters encountered along the way that we can only assume are minions of this Shadow Mario. Shadow Mario is later revealed to be Bowser Jr., son of Mario's nemesis Bowser (obviously). Only, Bowser Jr. is under the impression that Peach is his mother and that Mario kidnapped her, a lie fed to him by Bowser. This is strange on its own, but what's really weird is that when Peach is confronted with this lie, she doesn't make any effort to deny it. "Maybe I really could have given birth to this scaly, spiky turtle dragon," she must be thinking. Then again, birth has never been something taken seriously in the Mario universe. Mario and Luigi were being carried to their parents by storks in Yoshi's Island before Kamek kidnapped them. In that same game, we see that Yoshi lays eggs simply by eating monsters or bonking their heads on Yoshi-egg patterned boxes. Though, perhaps those eggs are inseminated the same way salmon procreate... I'm thinking too much about this now.

Anyway. Great game. The most annoying levels aren't necessary to beat it, so it's completely worth it.

This was my favorite game of all-time, and though not my favorite anymore, it is still by far my favorite Mario game and in my top 3 favorite games of all time. The only negative part of this game were the blue coins in my opinion. It was ridiculous how they didn't give you any idea on how to find some of the most challenging ones to find, and it took a lot of guides until I finally found them all. Now with that out of the way, I love absolutely EVERYTHING about this game. To the soundtrack that I still hum to today from time to time, to the beautiful visuals for the time that still hold up today, to the gruelling challenges that took so many of my lives, to the gameplay mechanics that I still love to this day, and even to the absurd amount of glitches that just added that much more enjoyment to the game. FLUDD is one of the best god damn ideas in any video game. ever. whoever came up with FLUDD needs a raise.
ofc it's a masterpiece of design and all that gubbins but idk this one's a lot more clanky and rough around the edges. far more frustrating moments than what you'll get with 64 and galaxy.

I didn't like this game, it looks good and the story is fun but the gameplay is awful imo. The back jump sucks and the FLUDD mechanic is really annoying sometimes. Also the Delfino Island is fun for a while but it becomes borring after a while

Mario Sunshine really gets a bad wrap. In fact I love the game. There is no other way to describe it than fun. The location of a beach, and a vacation like setting is so good. Maybe it's the fact that I'm still in school and having a vacation is the best setting ever in a game when your in school. I also love FLUDD. Its such a unique item in Mario's arsenal and I love it. The level design is really interesting and original. One mission your trying to ground pound these weird lip creature off a solar panel, then the next you're fighting a Manta Ray's shadow. It has some great, and iconic areas as well. Isle Delfino as a whole is so good. I love Noki Bay, and Sirena Beach so much. Especially Sirena Beach. Did I mention how addicting this game is? Well it is one of the most addicting games I have ever played. You always want to keep helping the Piantas. It is far from perfect. There are some cheap levels. But most of the cheap levels are optional like the Pachinko machine. Also the purple coins have to be annoying for completionists. But this is one of those games I could turn to any day and have so much fun. I give Mario Sunshine a 9/10. Expand

Super Mario Sunshine is an exciting and fun tropical adventure that takes place on Isle Delfino. With lots of locations to explore, enemies to defeat, and secrets to uncover, there's not a dull moment. A really good follow-up to Super Mario 64 with a fresh and different skill-set for Mario for a watery experience.
A super fun time under the sunshine!

This is one of the games I would just run around as a child. When I replayed the game in 3D All-Stars I was worried I wouldn't enjoy it as much. But this game blew my expectations out of the water. Surprisingly deep movement that's fun to simply toy around with, a detailed world that follows a universal tropical theme, and a corny story (that I admit is bad) makes this my favorite 3D Mario.

  1. The FLUDD system is used throughout the game and can either be why the game is so great or why the game is so mediocre.
  2. To say that the camera in this game is atrocious is like saying being kicked in the teeth kinda hurts-it gives the person an idea about how bad it is, but it doesn't even begin to describe the agony in detail.

A masterpiece of superior game design, infinite gameplay variety, creativity, and life-and it's got a water cannon…and a damn brilliant one at that.
