The characters are charming, and I actually found myself looking forward to encountering new enemies, even the ones that were just recolored sprites (the Tattle bestiary system and the item library were also nice features, providing impetuses for scouring the nooks and crannies of the world for hidden goodies and ingredients for recipes). The platforming features in the out-of-battle world were also satisfying, and the abilities Mario gains and those that his partners grant him have imaginative uses. The areas of the game are accessible with very little backtracking, too, as new shortcuts are opened up to the player. My one gripe about the game is a trivial matter. At one point in the game, I became stuck in the Palace of Shadow with one HP. Unfortunately, I reflexively hit the first save block that I saw, not realizing that it would make getting out of there very difficult (I was pretty much in the middle of the chapter, and had no healing items). As such, a "Teleport to Rogueport" option would have been nice. Expand

The battle system has even more depth with the addition of the audience and stylish commands. The gameplay itself is pretty much as perfect as the gameplay of the original. Although the game is structured similarly to the first paper mario game, as both use the storybook-like chapter system, each chapter is original. Chapter three and six especially change up the gameplay formula in an amazingly original way. The puzzles are better in this game than in the first, the bosses just as epic, and the characters and party members are just as characterized as in the first game bringing a sense of connection to the game. The main new gameplay element this game introduces is mario's ability to transform into various paper structures, allowing him to solve new and original puzzles. This game not set in the mushroom kingdom, but rather in an oceanside town called rougeport. This, along with the original chapter design keeps the game fresh. The game's story also improves upon the first paper mario. Bowser is no longer the villain, and you watch as he comedically tries to be one. This is all you need to know about the story, as the rest is revealed in the game. The end of chapter peach gameplay is back, but is accompanied by bowser gameplay too. The peach gameplay is once again the worst part of the game, but the bowser gameplay is very fun as you get to play several of the original super mario bros. levels as him. The graphics are very good and the soundtrack is very good as well, but is not quite as good as the original paper mario soundtrack. All in all, paper mario 2 is one of, if not, my favorite games of all time. The depth of the gameplay, wonderful characterization and level design from paper mario 1 is back, this time with improvements. The game also improves upon its storyline, poking fun at the traditional mario storyline of bowser always being the villain. If you can, get a copy of this game to play on your wii or gamecube, or get a copy of it for the wii u when it gets released. This may be the most polished mario rpg out there. Expand

This game is absolutely phenomenal in all aspect throughout game play, and somehow is able to make turning into a pig one of the scariest/creepiest things ever. RPG at its finest, with almost no flaws whatsoever, except trying the game a second time is slightly easier than the first. Overall, 9.8/10, a commendable effort in the making

The BEST nintendo RPG on the market, rivalled only by its predecessor on the n64. You'd have to be seriously cynical not to enjoy this game. Where the game design choices are not always the best and the dialogue could probably be toned down, the game puts together everything imaginable for a thoroughly satisfying experience.

It has such a variety of fun, memorable characters, great-looking settings, a unique stage production-inspired presentation, and plot twists that actually caught me off guard the first time I played it.

One of this game's biggest strengths is that, unlike every other game in the Paper Mario series, each chapter has its own, self-contained subplot that is unconnected from the main plot, yet at the same time greatly contributes to it. You feel like you're experiencing a new story in each chapter, but it's not distracting enough that you forget what the main plot is or find yourself just wishing for it to end so you can move on already.

On top of that, the already-good battle and badge system from the Nintendo 64 game was expanded upon in this one and it's all the better for it. The badges offer even more customization, and the battle system is, once again, simple yet effective, in a way that it never goes stale. And on top of that, each boss, while using the same basic mechanics as all fights, are unique in their own little ways to keep them interesting.

With almost all things, I'm a very tough grader, and this is one of the few things I'm willing to give a solid 10/10. There are no real crippling flaws with this game, and the only problems I have are small nitpicks and opportunities I feel the creators missed.

Gorgeous graphics, good musics, great characters with each its own unique identity.
The best so far is the story: This game, Rosalina's story on Galaxy and Sunshine are rare gifts with each an interesting story that you would like to follow. I mean this game's story is even better than the first Paper Mario which is "Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser" type of story. In TTYD you literally fight Peach as a final boss.
The strategies in this game can be up to infinite and the battles are all unique and differents.

Bosses are extremely fun and tough to fight, and require a whole lot of strategy to beat out. The music is absolutely pleasant, as I listen to the music all the time on and off the game. The game length is also very long, at around 35 hours on your first go, and that doesn't even include post-game things. The game looked stunning. Every bit of progression made me feel apart of this game. The concept was so smart and really fits well for a Mario title.
Another thing I found about this game, is that it was quite dark in a way which is hard to explain which was certainly unexpected.
There were also so many witty characters that made me laugh a lot.
One of my favourite areas in the game is during the wrestling chapter where you fight that hawk.
I may seem a bit strange when I point the reasons why I liked it
    1 - I was a huge wrestling fan
2 - When you had to wait for your time to fight, it somehow felt good to be waiting in the locker room.
3 - You didn't really know what was going to happen

I also found the game very challenging aswell. You had to have great timing for dodging attacks and you had to be properly equipped and leveled to succeed.

The wrap this up. The game looked beautiful (not a word that I usually say) but its true.
Game play was perfectly balanced and a pleasure to explore the world and find out what it had to offer.
Music was quirky and very Mario-Like. Music is a big check box for me in gaming.
It had some strange humor which was quite subtle and mature. I really had to thing twice on what was said!

This game had everything that the original Paper Mario had, and at the same time it has put more sense on its name. Let me say why this game is so much more brilliant than the original:
In the overworld, like i said on my previous post, it had Mario and Partners, and Mario only did some actions like jumping and hammering things, and thanks to the partners it was more enjoyable. But this time, Mario makes the fact that he is paper more like a fact, instead of just being a flat sprite walking on a 3d world, now he can turn into a Paper boat, or a Paper airplane, he can also pass through tight places, like prison bars, he can also roll on the ground. It made this game greater.
In the battle system, it has changed a lot. Mario and his Partner's attacks works the same way as the originals, but now instead of being on the current zone, they go to a theater, and when Mario does an attack with success, it has more commemoration. And you can press a certain button when someone is about to throw a item on you, however, some items are good and some are bad, if someone is about to throw an bad item on you, you press this button, but when it's good, you can press it but you'll lose that good item. There's actually much more to it, but i think i said enough.

This is my 1st favorite Paper Mario game, a brilliant masterpiece.

The most boundary pushing Mario game to date. Give it a shot, the simple Mario franchise name as a whole might already put some people off. Fret not though, there's a noose in the starting towns square. This game isn't afraid to change pace from Mario's usual roots.

The combination of an outstanding level design, (the train and the arena were awesome) great dialogue, a great atmosphere, and the innovative battle system produce a game that's definetely worth playing. If you own a Gamecube or a Wii, you owe it to yourself to pick this up and see what a casual, yet surprisingly deep game this can be.

Mario has a variety of different companions throughout the quest, and each bring their own unique skill and personality. The improved battle mechanics including Partner HP and the Audience applause meter are very welcome and are fun additions to an already excellent turn based battle system. There are also a handful of excellent side-quests in this game, some even on par with those of the Legend of Zelda. The rewards for completing these side adventures can range from a simple thank you to adding a new companion to your party. The graphics from this game hold up very well thirteen years later because of it's simple, paper-y style. Despite not being the main antagonist this time around, Bowser is back with a vengence for Mario, and it's amusing to constantly see him one step behind Mario and Co. The different locations you visit on your adventure are all very entertaining and different from one another, which is refreshing to see in a Mario game. There is a reason as to why many people consider to be one of the best, if not the best, GameCube game.

The gameplay carries over from the original Paper Mario (N64), but now partners have their own HP. FP, BP and SP all return, but this time the “Special” moves are focused around the main artifact for this entry: The Crystal Stars. The partner system makes a return and is improved on - rather than tools with some dialog, the partners in this game feel more fleshed out as characters.

In terms of story, there is a presence of much darker themes and the story overall is more complex, and is very different to the traditional “Bowser kidnaps Peach”. The characters are generally well written and the humour lands in just the right way.

However, there are some issues with the game - there is a **lot** of backtracking as a result of “hallway” level design occasionally combined with required fetch quests. Unlike later entries, exploration isn’t as rewarding, but is still worth it. Where this game truly shines is the combat and the storytelling.

The art style is overall very charming, and develops on the “pop-up book” style of the first game with “paper” style abilities which can be essential to puzzle solving.

Whilst this game, like any other, has its flaws, it makes for an excellent beginner’s RPG that doesn’t alienate RPG veterans, and is filled with memorable moments and characters. Like many others, I believe that this game, along with the original and SPM for the Wii, deserve to be remade for the Switch.

    - The dialogue is of course superb. Incredibly charming, and funny.

    - I liked how they tied in Bowser despite him not being the main antagonist.

    - The TEC side story with Peach was also very sweet. A little sad, but it was a welcome change from the main story.

    Bad

    - the game won't let me turn around hammer quickly. Which makes it hard to counter attack with hammer if the enemy is approaching me from behind.

    - some puzzles are really stupid, like what the heck is a water hole, how am I supposed to know I can blow these boxes because their paper in the storage room in glitzville

    - it's stupid how items and coins after a battle can drop into the water. There was a fire enemy that it was fighting very close to the water and after I beat him, all the goodies dropped straight into the water after.

    - the depth perception in some parts of the game looks really off, making me fall into a water or off a cliff by accident because it was hard to gauge Mario's distance.

    - some of the story progression events are really ambiguous to figure out period because sometimes you need to talk to an NPC with a certain partner with you, which isn't always obvious.

    - tracking general white to literally every single world just to talk to an NPC then moving on to the next world was pointless, mundane and not fun.

    - I don't understand why there are so many sprites in the game, when you max out your partner upgrades super early in the game.

    - I found much of the offensive and debuff items pretty useless because I could dispatch pretty much all the enemies with regular FP attacks.

    - there are too many sections of the game where Mario just walks around looking for something or looking for someone. Like in chapter 6 in the train. I'm just constantly running back and forth between passengers. And chapter 7 in the moon fortress. And here I'm just taking elevators and just walking from room to room.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Mario RPG spin-off series has come far, hasn't it? As Nintendo's number one mascot, Mario is tasked with keeping a consistent track record of polished game design whether it be traditional platforming or unique gameplay. But it's very enticing that his spin-off games are given just as much praise as his platforming games. And the RPGs are probably the most ground breaking of them all.

Not only have they inspired quality character design and story telling elements, but they've left an even bigger impact on the entire gaming community, Leaving unforgettable memories with each adventure. But now, the series is in a pretty sorry state. With the "Mario and Luigi" series kicking the bucket and "Paper Mario" taking three entire games to get its new formula right, the fan base has never been angrier. I still find it hard to believe that a crossover with the Rabbids is somehow more enjoyable than the sloppy "Sticker Star" sequel.

So at this moment, it's more important than ever before to remind the developers of Mario's story to never screw up this up again. Or else the star spirits of "Super Mario RPG" shall reign their fury upon thee. I've studied this game multiple times in the past, but now that I've finally found a copy, I now realize what the Mario RPG series needs to keep in mind no matter what the design may be.

It's starts off like the last adventure with a story book opening, all its missing is a concerned parent gazing upon the noose in Rogueport. And yes, this game was intended for children. While it has a ton of kid friendly elements and bright colors, this one of the more rougher Mario games.

I mean the moment you get into town, you get mugged by the Yoshi's Island Bandit. The tone of this new world reminds me a lot of Indiana Jones. Sometimes you'll find some warm faces, but usually you'll find assassins and sinister organizations terrorizing villages. Bowser did some pretty vile stuff in the last game, but those acts of mischief pale in comparisons to the brand new villains.

You'll be searching for legendary treasure, while being tailed by bandits, shadow demons, and all sorts of monsters. The adventure theme in this game is a nice change of pace. Personally I like the theming of the first game more with its child-like innocence. But the second game is definitely more exciting. You get to see Mario take on terrifying foes, team up with new friends along the way, and save the world from an ancient threat.

Combined with the polished battle system. The boss fights have never been more enjoyable. This game was definitely made for fans of the last game, starting Mario off with not only the hammer, but the ability to skip battle tutorials. And now that players have access to way more powerful moves, the difficulty also steps up as well. Not only are the bosses a real challenge, but this game also has a really challenging post game level.

The Dojo Master was a nice way to challenge players in the last game, but the Pit of 100 Trials, oh boy is it a fiasco. A survival challenge that rewards you with each completed set of levels. And waiting below is the menacing Bonetail Dragon. Who leagues above the Dojo Master. I hope that all future Mario RPGs have awesome post game dungeons like this. Because they're a real test of endurance.

Everything is pretty awesome in this game, especially the character design. These characters are so colorful that they would go on to cameo in other spin off games like Dark Bones in Mario Super Sluggers. The game also has plenty of Easter eggs referencing the last game. Adding bits of fairy dust to the lore. Bow the Boo even comes to visit in Poshley Heights. It's nice to see a Paper Mario sequel that actually treats its past titles with respect. I'll never forget the scars Sticker Star!

I guess the only thing I could complain about is the backtracking in Chapter 7 is really unnecessary, despite the funny punchline at the end of the search. And I found the puzzles in Boggly Woods to be a little bit on the annoying side. If their's any advantage the modern games have, is that their's more wiggle room when its comes to puzzle solving.

I'll always remember when I was little, the first Mario RPG I've ever studies was a fan made game known as the "Seven Sages". Which payed tribute to all the classic Mario RPGs. And it inspired me to study the whereabouts of every game in the series. And when I learned where the "don't give up" music came from this game. I was deeply moved. The final battle against the Shadow Queen, where all the people you met on your journey cheer you on is nothing but heart warming bliss.

While not my favorite game in the series, it definitely had a powerful effect on the entire Mario RPG community.

This game has an amazing combat system and an amazing story I don’t want to say too much because the game need not be spoiled, but this is the best game I’ve ever played.

The mix of 2D characters on a 3D plane not only looks appealing, the gameplay that's designed around the concept (Mario's transformation skills in particular) is a creative fusion of art and design. [Nov 2004, p.105]
  3. And it'll soak up far more of YOU than "Mario & Luigi" or the other Mario RPGs ever did, too. It's easy to believe you could spend as long with this as you could a decent-length Final Fantasy title.
