This is probably Nintendo's best games ever released and one of the best franchises they've ever had (Other M be damned). It still gets a perfect score because I can't think of another Nintendo game worth of 10/10 except for StarFox64, Kirby 64, or maybe even SSBB (with the minus mod, of course). The game looks great and plays better than any other console FPS game I've been forced to endure, so it already is miles above Halo and CoD. It also is a truly immerse game with well constructed environments. The story is, much like a Valve game, in the background and never in your face with obnoxious cutscenes. You can gather more information with your Scan Visor if you want to know more about what's going on, you can speculate it and just shoot a bunch of dudes, or you can use a walkthrough and ruin the experience for yourself entirely. But the story all "do, don't show" and it works incredibly well. But, as I said, I have to criticize it somewhere. I think the lack of a hard mode from the beginning is an annoyance. you have to beat the game first before you can use it and that isn't cool. Why should I have to replay a game for difficulty changes? Shouldn't I just be allowed to pick the setting I want whether it be the one that holds my hand or kicks me in the balls? Also, some scans are a 1-shot-deal in that you can only scan a dude at ONE point in the game and if you miss it, that's it. I get that for Boss Monsters because you'll scan them anyway to figure out a weakness. But I think it was Ice Shriek bats are in only one place for the first time you pass through it and then they are gone forever. That seems like a rather dick move on Retro Studio's part. But the good HORRENDOUSLY outweighs the bad. If you are, for some reason, just now getting a gamecube and you don't have this in your collection, I have one of two things for you to do. First, get your head examined. If you are mentally healthy, you have no excuse to not get this game. If you are, for some reason, not mentally healthy, then go back to wasting hours of your time playing Halo Reach and enjoy your generic shooter **** Expand

Samus controls so well that you actually feel like you're the one wearing the Power Suit. The music is incredible and is always changing. For example, the Chozo Ruins music is a quiet tune until you get the Morph Ball. From that point onwards, the music changes to a catchy tune that I loved. The replay value is great, since there are, in traditional Metroid fashion, multiple endings that you get depending on your item collection rate. The boss battles are few, but very satisfying. The difficulty is perfect...what else can I say? If I keep talking about the positives of this game, my review won't fit into the page, so I will end it by saying this: If you don't have it, buy it. Metroid prime is all about level design and gameplay. Forget the subtle story, the brilliant graphics, and the awesome soundtrack. Metroid prime seems like a huge game, but really it's small. What makes it feel so big is the brilliant sense of adventure and discovery. You enter an erea, find the correct path through puzzles and platforming(and of course, fighting some local life forms). When you clear an erea you usually get a new weapon or gadget that allows you to visit areas that were blocked before so. It becomes a sort of a giant puzzle, where you must fit in the right pieces to proceed. The game isn't brutally difficult, like the 2d Metroid games, but at the same time requires attention and understanding of your surrounding. It's a game made purely for gamers. It combines elements from most genres into one genius package. If you haven't played this game, you should do so as soon as you can. I never expected it to be that good. Expand

Some of the enemies are really tough but a few are REALLY annoying, including metroid. When I got to the point in the game where you have to fight metroid, my satisfaction with this game took a hit.

Even within those games there's even a smaller quantity of games that manage to become part of ourselves, living in our memories for years, even decades. The intro for this game, managed to single-handedly engrave that moment, those 40 50 seconds so deep within my brain that became the most memorable moment in my gaming life.
If the job of the intro of any game is a statement on how good will it be, this intro might as well be the best intro in vedeogame history. But enough about the intro, the important areas are gameplay, story and presentation:
-Gameplay: The controls are a bit odd at first since the game is in a first person perspective; you move with the control stick, hold R to survey, and hold L to lock view, move the C-Stick in one of the 4 directions to select a weapon and likewise with the D-Pad for the visors. You may expect dual anlog control for a first person game, but Prime does not uses it. In the context, the controls are flawless since there's no area where you feel cheated because you couldn't aim correctly since the game offers a lock-on targeting system similar to Zelda.
The way the map is laid out is brilliant, it's very similar to Super Metroid where you'd see an unaccessible area and aquire an upgrade to access that area, the way that ends up working without hand-holding is near perfect, it triggers your memories whenever you get the upgrade needed for a particular area, and that is something that never before had i seen on a game before it or super metroid.
There's some puzzle elements where you need to activate or deactivate certain mechanisms to obtain access or upgrades. With the morph ball the variety and creative use of the Power suit has never been so wide.
-Story: Is simple, you receive a distress signal in space, such signal comes from an space pirate experimentation frigate. You get there and find several pirates dead. You progress further and discover the source: A mutated form of a parasite that killed them. Later on you kill such creature and the frigate enters a self-destruct mode, you escape from it and in the way out you find your nemesis Ridley.
Ridley escapes in to the nearest planet and you chase after him. Later in the game you discover the real threat.. That's just what the game presents to us on a superficial level, however because there's a scan capability built in to the power suit, there are a lot of scan points scattered through the planet and scanning them reveals the story behind the planet, some chozo info. and the space pirate's point of view of the situation. The way these are implemented is brilliant, they're there only for those who want to read them.
-Presentation: This may be the most influential category in the game. The visuals (For the time) where spectacular to say the least. The environments are so rich, full of life and dead in some cases, which is not a bad thing. The atmosphere created in the game is the most impressive i've experienced in a game, in the rainy overworld you feel isolated, but at the same time watched, observed by all of the life's lifeforms crawling all around you. In the Magmoor caverns you feel a bit more comfortable since the whole area is underground. In the Phazon mines you constantly feel like in any moment you could die to space pirates, and the way the music reflects these situations is superb. The music in this game is also extremely fitting and causes awe just by listening them. This world you experience through samus's eyes is filed with details, the rain will fall down to your visor, the water pours down as you emerge from a water source, intense light blinds you for a brief period of time, some enemies cause static in the visor, moths in the environment will approach the light that the morph ball emanates.. those little touches makes the world feel alive and you get that feel from the beginning to the end credits.
    It really is masterful.

When Metroid Prime was published, I had played games of many genres, especially enjoying many of Nintendo's grand 2D classics' successful leaps into the third dimension. Hopes for the Metroid series to do the same had been little to none, as I didn't believe it could be done without changing the whole concept.

But again, I was surprised. With Metroid Prime, my feeling always was: This is a perfect video game. It uses the medium perfectly, speaks to the player's aesthetic senses as well as to his natural curiosity and desire to interact, and in spite of atmospheric depth, it still keeps that "pride of being unreal" from its 2D past, trying not to overwhelm with excessive realism, but instead offering a quite simple, but a most involving gameplay nonetheless. It feels like controlling a very powerful apparatus with little effort, and using it to explore a planet, a biotope and a civilization or two.

After many years and having bought 3 Gamecubes just to be able to continue playing this game (the Gamecube is an awfully short-lived console), when I revisit it today, this feeling still persists: Yes, in general, Prime is a game close to perfection. Yet some criticism that existed from the beginning has become clearer to me and should not be blurred by nosthalgia (which I've always felt is untruthful). Here are the two bummers:

    1) The controls, although having been extremely ingenuous and easy enough to learn, are lacking for this type of game, in one specific respect: There is no way to look around while strafing. That severely limits a) perception of the surrounding area, and b) fighting. You must stand still while looking. I've tried to explain that away with lore, but the discomfort returns and remains every time I play this title. Lock-on targeting thus becomes obligatory. This sort of auto-targeting was a good way to go for a third-person adventure like Zelda, but far from ideal for a first-person game, where the ability of manually targeting is essential. I don't mean to exaggerate the *Shooter* aspect of Metroid Prime, but that genre surely established more flexible controls. Of course, Prime is playable enough, but a less static targeting mode, whilst keeping the unique jump physics, is really missing in this classic. With such free aim, Metroid's arcade-esque core could develop to the fullest. (To be fair, the S/NES predecessors had very similar behaviour.)

    2) The "room puzzles" as known from the Zelda series, aren't exciting, intelligent or interesting. They break the flow decisively. This is not a mere consquence of time wearing down a certain gameplay mechanism, but a consequence of that mechanism's very dullness. Somewhat similar, but a little less dull, are the boss fights. Tackling these same puzzles or tests again simply cannot satisfy as much as it did the previous time - instead, they only postpone further exploration. That is - for me - a severe drawback to replaying Metroid Prime. And, yes: exploration still works for me.

I wanted to write a third point of criticism, called "backtracking", but then I reconsidered - there are many possibilities to play this game against the designers' intentions, using certain non-intended techniques to make up your own path through the game. Meaning that in Prime's special case, the backtracking does not constitute a strong argument, it can be circumvented.

But, still: As much as it hurts not to show the maximum rating, I am confident that the two mentioned factors do justify that one withheld rating point. Still, Metroid Prime offers an experience everyone should try, for so many reasons.

Samus: Found 100%. Still need to find out who came up with these silly "Halo" comparisons....

While I don't think it quite tops Halo, Metroid Prime is one of the best first person shooters ever (even though Nintendo technically classifies it as a "first person adventure" game). While I don't think it quite tops Halo, Metroid Prime is one of the best first person shooters ever (even though Nintendo technically classifies it as a "first person adventure" game). We were all a little bit skeptical when a first person Metroid was revealed, but any fears we had were quickly vanquished at the release of the game.

For starters, not only does this game have a really good story, but a fantastic and creative implementation of it. Rather than stooping as low as giving Samus a voice to carry out the story like Team Ninja later did with Other M, Retro Studios had most of the story learned by scanning various Chozo Scripts and Pirate Logs, thus letting gamers see the story from another point of view for once. Reading about the spread of the phazon builds tons of suspense, and drove me forward as my curiosity grew. People who say this game has no story just aren't playing the game the right way.

The gameplay in this game is outstanding as well. The elements of Metroid are blended perfectly with first person shooter elements, and the combat is spectacular. While some of the earlier boss fights seem a little underwhelming, the later boss fights are very challenging and exciting. The exploration is wonderful beyond words, and the world is packed with more secrets to find than Zelda games, which is saying a lot. Not to mention, the scanning feature is a very inventive way to add another element to the game, and the scan log adds even more things necessary to do to 100 percent the game. Oh, and if you didn't already guess, the replay value is extremely high.

The controls seem a little strange at first, but since the game is built around those controls, it plays much, much smoother than you might imagine when you first start the game.

The graphics of Metroid Prime are ahead of its time, and still look amazing today. I rarely saw a texture or object I thought looked undetailed or blocky. In addition, the soundtrack is outstanding, with memorable tracks for each location and event in the game.

Overall, this game is a masterpiece that is easily one of the best games on the system. Anyone who has a Gamecube cannot call their game library complete without Metroid Prime.

And you know what? It beats the crap out of most games today. I'm such a stupid **** for missing out on this one. It really is freaking awesome. The work that went into the making of this game it amazing. I been out of the nintendo scene so I might be wrong here but even if I am I know I'm not too far off when I say this but... This is probably the best exclusive game on the game cube. Definitely one of the best games ever made I would say...

I'm playing it on the wiiu with the nunchuck on the metroid prime collection version. It was hard to get used to at first, mostly because I never tried motion controls much but man oh man once I got used to it in about 4-6 hours it feels so awesome. I'm running and gunning and it feels so much more realistic than your standard shooter like halo or cod when using a non-motion controlled controller. If you thought you truly felt like the MC in the halo games then you haven't seen jack. In this game with the nunchuck you truly feel like samus. So many details went into this games amazing adventure. From the world feeling super life like to small things like seeing your facial reflection during flashy explosions. I'm addicted. Never thought a metroid game could be this great in a FP perspective but IT IS! Can't say I'm surprised... I knew this game would be good but it's DAMN GOOD! A great game that goes down in history as a game changer for the world of gaming. This is quality gaming at it's best. When nintendo hits hard they freaking nail it!

Can't wait to play it's 2 sequels. I want to give this game a 10 so badly. No game is perfect though. Like not being able to skip the elevator cinematic scenes. Which only last like 10 seconds but still... It's not a big deal though considering they did a wonderful job with the visuals so you want to watch everything anyways.

It's also silly how Samus loses her sweet gear in the beginning of the game by a simple explosion but hey... Details. Minor stuff. It doesn't take away from the over all amazing experience. I just got whooped by a giant space pirate monster and now I'm going back for more. If you missed this game you're simply missing out. GET THIS GAME!

PS... I give this game a 9.8. I just don't do 10's though. Sorry. No game deserves a perfect score. Perfection doesn't exist. The game would have to be so good that I would never want to play another game ever again to earn a 10 rating from me and that simply wont ever happen for anyone. The game would have to rub my balls and give me a "get in to heaven for free guaranteed card" or some crazy thing like that for me to rate it a 10 lol. This game is up there though. Like halo CE. Perfect dark 64. And of course Ocarina of time.

It's just not that fun to traverse the same 30 rooms over and over and over again over the course of the game ( and deal with the quickly respawning enemies again every time), just to get around the map to the different regions.

Speaking of enemies: The Lock-On system can be kind of finicky (I'm playing the Wii version), and the controls in general can be a little clunky and slow. Firing multiple Ice Beams in a row, charging up your Beams, firing a Super Missile, switching from missiles to Beams, everything takes just a little bit too long to do (and the Grapple Beam in general was pretty hit-or-miss for me). Which is fine for the most part because the game is pretty easy (really the navigation presents a bigger challenge than the enemies most of the time), but can be VERY annoying when fighting a certain type of late-game enemy.

Oh yeah, and the fight against Meta-Ridley just goes on for WAY too long. My right pointer finger was already cramping up.

But again, aside from these relatively minor criticisms, MP is an awesome and captivating game that still holds up surprisingly well in 2021. Graphics were stellar for the Gamecube, the framerate is at a consistent 60FPS, the music, atmosphere, and attention to detail are amazing, and the way the backstory gradually unfolds through logs is very intriguing. Also, let's not forget that this was the first 3D Metroid game EVER and appreciate what an outstanding job Retro Studios did at translating the DNA of a 2D side-scrolling platformer into a 3D First-Person game, all the while keeping the fundamentals of the series completely intact. Kudos!

Bump the resolution on this bad-boy up to 1080p, upscale the textures, sharpen up the controls a little bit, and maybe introduce a late-game fast-travel feature, then put it on the Switch, and this game still wipes the floor with most modern releases, despite being almost 20 years old. Now that's a good game!

Of course, as to be expected from any older piece of entertainment it is not without it's problems. This is a very solid single player, first person shooter with impressive atmosphere (especially for the time) and well-varied locales. However, the controls (amongst a few, more nit-picky things) are certainly in need of an update. When I first started the game after only having played a few of the 2D Metroid games I kind of enjoyed the tank controls, because it gave me a very similar feel to how Samus controlled in those 2D games (like how you had to stop moving to be able to aim in the 3D space in front of you), but as I continued I quickly realized that this control scheme does not work well for the type of game that Metroid: Prime is. It was incredibly annoying to have to stop in place to be able to look up to lock on to one of the massive bosses mid-battle or look down at the ground you are standing on so you can actually DO the first person platforming the game asks of you. The combat also suffers a bit from not having a way to easily aim in a 3D space while moving, which means you are essentially required to use the lock on feature if you want to be able to move while shooting your foe. Of course Retro did a fantastic job of still making the bosses fun and interesting despite giving themselves this constraint, so the combat is still rather enjoyable during boss fights, with the smaller enemies feeling like more of obstacles to be avoided. I have heard that the Wii remake addressed the problem with the controls by giving it motion controls that are, for the most part, better, but I would love to see a remake of this game with dual stick controls more than anything. Despite that one major problem, this game is still incredibly fun to play, and the place where it shines the most is in its atmosphere. The music and sound design in this game, compared with the unique and almost foreign visuals leave you feeling like you are actually all alone on a hostile alien planet. This game with it's 2002 graphics made me feel an intensity most games of TODAY can't make me feel, and certainly deserves a look. All in all I can see why this game is beloved by many, especially considering when it was released, but there are certainly improvements to be made. I hope that the next two in the trilogy address some of the issues the first had, and I cannot wait for Metroid: Prime 4. Expand

+ Lots of interesting upgrades add a really nice feeling of progression.
+ Overall very polished game that runs in smooth 60 FPS.

    Negatives:
    - Controls are clunky. You can't manually aim while moving plus the lock-on system often times targets the wrong enemy. This makes even simply looking up a very slow and frustrating experience.
    - Saving is only possible at certain points which are few and far between in some areas.
    - Half of the game is just backtracking. I'd personally rather play a shorter game than go through the same generic halls and rooms 10 times because I constantly have to return for something on the other side of the map.

I streamed this game as it was and still is one of my favorite games of all time. I had not played it for many years though, so I wanted to see if it still held up today.
The first thing that you will realize playing this game is how cool the presentation is. On the menu itself, it is the inside of a Metroid. And when the game begins, you the player are shown the graphical prowess of the Gamecube. A distress call, the vacuum of space, Samus’s ship appears, and bam, in all her glory, Samus. Gorgeous graphics and a stunning show for Metroid fans who waited many years for a new game. But due to the new nature of the gameplay and 3D space, players would have to get used to a new way to move and control Samus.

One of the biggest critiques that can be leveraged against the game is the controls. Unfortunately, they are very archaic and they pre-date the use of dual thumb sticks that many First Person Shooters use today. The controls caused me many times to move in a direction I didn’t want to, and I constantly felt like they were tank controls. The controls would have been improved with a much faster turn rate, but they are still workable. The controls however offer the ability to manually aim, which is a massive improvement over Super Metroid’s 8-way direction. A lock on feature was included making it a breeze to battle, move, and dodge while shooting. Atop this, the controller is utilized with the heads-up display on Samus’s visor which then offers players no confusion when swapping weapons and visors.
With that out of the way, as I was playing the game I was still in awe of the graphics. It’s hard to think this game came out 20 years ago. And though it can be seen, especially with the lack of smoothing and jagged edges. However, this game came out only 1 year after the GameCube had released. Every area looks fantastic and is immersive. In the initial space station, steam fogs Samus’s visor. The graphical effects were stunning, seeing huge dead mad scientist experiments, tubes filled with genetically altered creatures, and finally confronting a massive boss all contributed to the immersion.

From the planet itself filled with foliage, water effects and waterfalls, Chozo Architecture, and overgrown temples. The Magma interior of the planet filled with Lava, tunnels, and fire-based creatures. The snow fields of Phendrana drifts, while snow falls and has the player crunching snow under their feet: fantastic. The space pirates research facility makes you feel claustrophobic while surrounded by botched experiments and any bit of lore you could want to learn about. The mines where operations are conducting appear industrial and the exact opposite of how the Chozo were living. And finally, the interior of the Meteor impact crater, which appears straight out of alien. And while exploring these fantastic looking areas comes fantastic ambient music. Most notably, Phendrana drifts, which is highly recommended in the video game ost world. Each area contains fitting musical tracks, some call backs to super Metroid, but all the music sounds fantastic and accompanies this massive adventure.

All of the environments are a joy to explore, which is the name of the game. As I went through the game I made good use of the scan visor, which offers players the ability to scan things and learn more about them. From enemies to the most mundane of things, the visor assisted in learning lore that no Metroid fans had access to. But the game is truly about exploring and learning about new creatures.

Going backwards in time 20 years this game was a fantastic joy to play yet again, and even with an archaic control scheme it was still not only playable but greatly enjoyable. I loved re-exploring Metroid Prime, re-learning the lore, encountering challenging bosses, and enjoying the music along with the areas of the alien planet.
Is it perfect? No, but is it a Masterpiece, absolutely.

An immersive experience of being alone on an alien planet, exploring the planet and picking up suit upgrades. The game is worth playing even for people who don't like FPS games because of this. Collecting power ups is satisfying and the player becomes stronger over the course of the game thanks to their efforts. Scanning is very satisfying and lets the player see the lore and worldbuilding if they so please Expand

After years of hearing about how classic this game is, I finally decided to check out the hype, and I was not let down. Great gameplay, puzzles, exploration, combat, all of it is great. And for the Gamecube, the graphics are a marvel. Anyone saying the controls are bad clearly doesn't understand why the c stick isn't used for aiming, and it's because it's used to switch guns. One of the most enjoyable and unique gaming experiences to date. Metroid Prime's amazing atmosphere is built up with so many different elements that just absolutely nail the feeling of being a lone bounty hunter on a wasteland of a planet. I know, I know, I'm beating a dead horse by saying it really *feels* like you're playing Samus, but there's no other way to properly say it. The magnificent environments, the visor effects when you're near vapor, water or electricity, the great world building that the Scan Visor offers, one of the best video game soundtracks of our generation and so much more make this game feel absolutely timeless to play (especially on the Trilogy version!).
The minus points come from some of the tedious backtracking and from recycling some of the ideas from Super Metroid (but making them better in my opinion, though).

This is certainly one of the best games I've ever played. I didn't play it when it came out and only played it recently. I think it is the second best game on the GameCube (second only to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker). My only complaint, and it is a small one, is that I thought Samus moved a little too slowly.

Incredible and well thought out well design, beautiful graphics for its time, and perfectly composed soundtracks that set the mood correctly for the game. Worthy to hold the Metroid name as all Metroids before this were side steppers.

This is a true masterpiece and a worthy candidate to one of the greatest games ever made with my only con being since the world gets unforgivingly large

Metroid prime isn't perfect but it offers great music and atmosphere, brilliant level design, interesting enemies, Fascinating puzzles and an adventure that will stick with your for the rest of your life. It's flawed but i'll take it. For me Metroid prime was the killer app for the Nintendo gamecube.

Jumping from a 2D side scroller to a first person shooter seems to be a risky move. Until it came it just for it to become possibly the best in the series, even to this day. BRING ON METROID PRIME 4!

The combat is the only area where the age of this game starts to show a little bit, but even then it's still a lot of fun. The story works extraordinarily well, as you get both environmental storytelling and storytelling through your scan visor.

TL;DR: Metroid Prime is an absolute must-play for everyone. Even if you don't particularly enjoy the Metroidvania sub-genre, you should still at least try this game. It's an absolute masterpiece, and I'm so glad that Retro Studios is continuing the series with Metroid Prime 4.

Just how could they transition from a 2D game design to this masterpiece of a first person adventure with great suspense, perfect mechanics and breathtaking scenery. Backtracking is a pain though.

A one of a kind game, that could be defined as first-person adventure. It's the incredible adaptation to the three dimensions of a legendary saga, just like Ocarina of Time was in the previous generation.

The best 3d space adventure you'll ever have. Everything about this game is perfect, it lives up to the hype. The sequels ( 2and 3) aren't quite as good but this game is just amazing on its own.

It doesn't matter if you've never played a Metroid game before - Prime will kick your ass and unrelentingly own you. [A+; Jan 2003, p.62]
  3. It oozes with so much addictiveness that the storyline plays second fiddle and reminds you of a time when gameplay was an integral part of gaming. Put simply, this is one of the best games I have played in a long, long time. [Grade = A+]
