I got a lot more of a simulation than I could have imagined.
-
Quirky and not for everyone, but it has an engaging charm and an addictive pitcher/batter interface that make it stand out.
-
Play MagazineHome Run King's secret lies in its easy to assimilate control mechanism and killer visuals. [April 2002, p.59]
-
Nintendo PowerThe pitching engine makes both pitching and hitting very realistic. [May 2002, p.134]
-
A game with fundamental flaws that limit its appeal to both the casual player and the ardent baseball guru.
-
The complete antithesis of "All Star Baseball 2003." It relies on tons of big hits and arcade action in general to keep its brand of baseball interesting.
-
Cleaner looking than "Triple Play," but lacking solid mechanics in the pitching and fielding.
-
HRK has High Heat beat in graphics, but its gameplay lags way behind.
-
A foul-tip among baseball games, Sega should have taken a vastly different direction from Acclaims sim series if it wanted to succeed with a truly arcade take on the sport.
-
At the very least, this is nowhere near the zany, offbeat baseball game ads promise.
-
It's a good overall game, but could have been a refreshing title had it redirected its focus and gone all out in either direction -- sim or arcade.
-
Fast at points, tedious others, with a clear emphasis on batting, but no way to really direct one's hit angle or power.
-
No matter how many games I played, I regularly gave up shallow bloop and in-the-gap inside-the-park homers because I couldn't gel with the computer's logic of who should be fielding the ball.
-
The gameplay is easy to grasp, but while good for some short-term fun, it ultimately falls short.
-
Game InformerThe gameplay formula [is] a complete and utter catastrophe. [May 2002, p.84]
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyMediocre at best. [June 2002, p.118]
-
Its as though Wow Entertainment couldnt decide whether it wanted the game to be a sim or an arcade-style title. It ends up borrowing elements from both sub-genres, and as a result is decidedly average.
-
An unwieldy pitching system and terrible fielding result in a twin killing for those expecting to connect with a fast-paced baseball game.
