Good fun in a nostalgic way, but younger gamers might not get what all the fuss is about.
  2. Worthy of a look from nostalgic gamers from the 16-bit era as well as people who didn’t play these games the first time around.
  3. It’s a nice way of reliving games of yore and allows a new generation of gamers to rediscover some of the great games of the 16-bit era.

Unfortunately, THQ changed absolutely nothing, which means that "Golden Axe," in particular, looks and sounds extremely dated." [Dec 2002, p.150]
  5. All three games in Sega Smash Pack are very playable, and retro collections of this type are almost always a welcome addition to modern consoles, especially when they are by and large faithfully reproduced.
  6. The game plays a lot like the Genesis version, but seems a bit more confined as the Game Boy Advance screen size plays a big role in this.

The motley crew of games is packed with great fun for fans of all genres. [Oct 2002, p.196]

As an entire package, Sega Smash Pack is a letdown, especially in its presentation.
  9. It's a good thing "Ecco" is basically tolerable, it's the only game in this collection that keeps the entire thing from stinking.
  10. Right now, I don’t see any point in buying a couple of mediocre Genesis titles, and "Sonic Spinball" can be found for the Genesis for less than ten bucks.
  11. The ports themselves are weak, perhaps the victim of an unrealistic development deadline, and the games aren't actually all that classic.
  12. How such a raft of glitches and mistakes and bugs got through the test phase (perhaps the testing team was a group of trained gorillas?) defies reason.
  13. Cheat Code Central

The biggest complaint is that the games suffer from slowdown, especially when the scrolling can't keep up to the speed of the character.

In today's day and age, there are much better ways to play these 3 classics on a portable. If you insist on playing this version, just know:

-The music in all three games is ear grating. Not only this, but the games are missing whole songs.
-There will be a few graphical glitches. I haven't seen anything game-breaking, but there were a few oddities.
-The AI in Golden Axe particularly is...off. The game feels much easier than the original.

Despite all this, the games are still fun. I got my copy for less than a cup of coffee, so at similar price points I can easily recommend it (with the volume off).
