  1. For either a first time fragger or a battle hardened veteran, Doom is simply superb. [GamesMaster]
  2. Players who have already exhausted the experience have no reason to buy it again unless they are extremely eager to see it flourish on a handheld.
  3. Considering we’re talking about a Game Boy title here, Doom is incredible.

It rocks. Grab three friends (who aren't very good at FPS games), link up, and blow them away. [Spring 2002, p.32]
  5. One of the things that made Doom so much fun back then, and still carries over today, is that feeling that danger (and madness) lay around each corner.
  6. 90
It's just as good on the GBA as it was in the old days.
  7. 90
You’ll have fun, and you’ll get a portable taste of gaming history that will remind you of why we’re doing all this fiddling around with these plastic doohickeys in the first place.
  8. 89
Excellent fun that's hurt only by its unestablished multiplayer mode and its overall been-there-done-that feeling.
  9. Hands down, Doom is the best action game ever made for a portable system.
  10. Unfortunately because of some limitations of the GBA console many features and characters have had to be left out and replaced. One of the most significant absentees is the final boss for the Inferno episode.
  11. While the graphics aren’t as smooth as they should be and some of the levels have been edited for content, Doom still shines when it comes to its frenetic and exciting gameplay.
  12. 84
There's something undeniably cool about having DOOM in your pocket.
  13. All in all Doom is a fantastic port to the GBA, some things are missing, some things are toned down, but that same raw gameplay that changed the way we thought eight years ago has come across wonderfully.
  14. Doom may be looking a mite long in the tooth in terms of the larger world of first-person games, but for a GBA title it's one Hell of a ride.
  15. It comes onto the handheld relatively intact, and the controls are solid, providing a fun, but certainly not perfect, experience.
  16. 80
Though switching weapons with the directional pad and both shoulder buttons takes a little time to get the hang of, the control scheme is tight and simple.
  17. 80
The graphics, though pixilated, are well done and utilize the GBA hardware competently. The monsters still look as threatening as ever, and the action animation is solid.
  18. Doom may be a bit too dated and/or simplistic to draw you back in. However, if you appreciate the beauty of straightforward gameplay, happen to have a few feisty friends, and absolutely adore your GBA, Doom is an excellent choice.
  19. Game Informer
    75
Even with a handful of miniscule changes, Doom remains immensely entertaining. [Dec 2001, p.118]
  20. The major problem lies with the fact that when all is said and done, Doom is still the same game it was almost ten years ago.
  21. At its very heart, it’s Doom, and the graphics can be bad, the music can stink the place out, and the Cyber Demon can be taken out, but there’s still that sick satisfaction that comes with blowing up a ring of barrels around a group of demons and watching them explode into a pile of goo.
  22. Electronic Gaming Monthly
    68
Straight dumb, violent fun, regardless of how many times you've seen it before. [Jan 2002, p.233]
  23. Nintendo Power
    60
The action can get fierce, the motion is fairly smooth and the four-player battle mode is an absolute blast. [Nov 2001, p.148]
  24. The 1993 PC original might look blocky by 2001 standards, but the GBA version fares worse, with intensely pixilated visuals that detract from an otherwise admirable port of the classic first-person shooter.

Full Review »

Doom is great but it has to be more like a first person shooter and more like dead space
