In the realm of todays high-powered next-gen role-players, BOFII is an excellent time-killernot to mention one of the better entries in the series.
-
You cannot go wrong with this game, as it is also one of the best games yet to be released for Game Boy Advance. Be warned that, aside from some small upgrades, it is just a port.
-
Game InformerFrom the gameplay and balancing, to the visual content and story, you really couldn't ask for much more from a 16-bit RPG. [Apr 2002, p.88]
-
Hours of engaging gameplay, a solid story and interface, and refinements all around make this a sequel definitely worth the purchase.
-
The gameplay is everything you could want in an RPG. Every battle is turn-based, and they feature some of the best, most easy-to-understand menus that I have ever seen.
-
Lengthy in nature, Breath of Fire II will keep you busy for quite some time and the story is more interesting in this rendition, with a colorful, and at times, zany cast.
-
The storyline and characters make Breath of Fire II a much better game than the first adventure in the series...even though the game hasn't changed a whole lot.
-
The RPG has all the subtle quirks that make a traditional RPG story fun to play and does it all with nice animation and sound.
-
Definitely hot stuff that hasnt been burned too badly by the hands of time.
-
Play MagazineThis sequel packs an astoundingly larger quest than the first, fresher graphics and even more rewarding gameplay. [May 2002, p.67]
-
The only blemish on the whole affair is navigating via the world map, as the small size of the GBA screen sometimes makes it a chore to find places you can dock at when riding the whale.
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyIn several aspects, this sequel out-classes its predecessor as a quality role-playing experience. [May 2002, p.115]
-
An RPG that is screaming out for 'essential' status, but due to the complete lack of a learning gradient ends up being unnecessarily difficult and frustrating to play.
-
Nintendo PowerComplex enough for dedicated gamers who want an absorbing adventure. [Apr 2002, p.152]
-
The story is almost insulting until nearly the end, I didnt like the characters, and combat was by and large pretty boring with all too many encounters.
-
Pocket GamesEven fans of old-school RPGs will find themselves with a nagging sense of deja-vu. Disappointing. [Summer 2002, p.22]

May 11, 2023Straight port of the old school SNES RPG with all of its strengths and weaknesses intact, and it works well on the Advance.
