It's a shame that the battle system is as simplistic as it is, because the game has so much going for it, including a great plot twist, fantastic art direction and an ending that is a real tearjerker.
-
It’s a simple, basic, kid-friendly RPG that has a few good tricks up its sleeves, and makes a nice round of gaming even for experienced players when they just don’t want to think too hard.

Nintendo PowerA cinch to pick up and play, but will be just as easily forgotten. [Oct 2009, p.90]
-
The graphics and soundtrack warrant a look for their own sake, but it's a light-on-story alternative view of a classic, that's sometimes too easy, sometimes too hard, and never quite the enchanting game I hoped it would be.
-
Beyond the Yellow Brick Road has its moments, but the novelty of strolling through the land of Oz soon wears thin.
-
I would recommend this game to experienced RPG fans who want something light to play on the side but anyone expecting a worthwhile journey through Dorothy's adventures will walk away disappointed.
-
Yellow Brick Road starts out as a promising take on a classic fairytale. You'll quickly learn that you're not in Kansas anymore and see the game for what it is, a mixed bag full of elementary role-playing.
-
A watered-down RPG with a few flaws that take some of the fun out of it. My first inclination was to compare the dilemmas in this game to those of the Scarecrow: No brain. But this game has maybe too much brain. It's very logical and Xseed definitely put a lot of thought into making it very playable. The problem with TWOBYBR, though, is more like the Tin Man's: No heart.
