The combined lack of compelling gameplay, graphics, and story makes it hard to recommend The Amazing Spider-Man, even to die-hard spider-fans. [Aug 2012, p.82]

Compared to the slickness of the movie, Spider-Man's DS outing just doesn't make the cut. It's not abysmal, but it also doesn't rise above the mediocre.

While you could do a lot worse in terms of fundamentals, there are much better handheld film tie-in offerings out there, and it's probably in your best interests to avoid this one.

The Amazing Spider-Man was a woefully disappointing title that I had some decent hopes for. Although the release date compared to theThe Amazing Spider-Man was a woefully disappointing title that I had some decent hopes for. Although the release date compared to the presentation of the game should have been a red flag, I still entered the game initially impressed and excited to see what I had in store.

The game plays like a 2.5D, beat 'em up and with that alongside it's later release date on an 8 year old platform, I expected things like varying settings and color palettes, as well as some other features, possibly like a skill tree or upgrade system as you progress. Although you may receive minor upgrades to things like your health, the game offers very little incentive to progress through it. The gameplay Is, as many say, very repetitive, you will find yourself consistently web-slinging and then punching. This is fun the first few times but wears thin quickly.

The enemy AI is rather poor and often when you engage in fights, you don't feel that sense of power you get from a superhero game. If you have more than a couple of enemies at once you become easily overpowered, especially when the enemy is able to perform a ranged attack. The music is drab and hard to even hear.

The art style is reminiscent of that mid-to-late 2000's gray and muted color palette. If the game came out closer to the release of the original DS it may be more forgivable; but to release in 2012, nearly 10 years after the DS' release makes the poor presentation more egregious.

Outside of the bland gameplay, the game does function well and I found little in the form of bugs or technical glitches in my short time playing. I cannot recommend this game, except maybe to completionists and die-hard fans of the franchise.
