Tactical Assault hits the balance between staying true to the series while making an entertaining and challenging video game.
-
Star Trek: Tactical Assault does a fantastic job with giving the player a feel of the Star Trek universe and what the commander of a starship had to go through in the shows. I would probably recommend picking out the PSP version if you had a choice.
-
Pelit (Finland)Might only be a 10% chunk of the original Starfleet Command, but SFC Light on the road is good enough for me. [Feb 2007]
-
There’s plenty of game happening in Tactical Assault, comfortably framed in adequate writing and a fair look and feel.
-
It's slow-paced, repetitive and a bit unbalanced, the lack of variety in combat really hurts the game, and the lackluster graphics really can grow frustrating at times. The two campaigns are fun, but they're a bit too easy to give the title any replay value.
-
Tactical Assault is not a typical strategy game, and the original design feels fresh when you first start playing. But it's also a one-trick pony, boiling down to the same basic maneuvers and slow-paced combat. It also horribly overlooks its license.
-
Nintendo GamerNo beaming down to alien planets filled with beautiful ladies/porridge monsters, though. [Feb 2007, p.82]
-
It offers a decent mix of strategy and action, though both halves never gel very well. The option to pilot several vessels in two different campaigns is definitely nice, but the story and missions could have used more variety.
-
Unfortunately, the repetitive battle tactics and bland storyline get stale after a few rounds, and all but the most dedicated Trekophiles will likely ditch it for more varied (and plentiful) strategic DS fare.
-
Lots of fun as you're mastering the unique strategies of Star Trek: Tactical Assault, followed by a crushing tedium once you realize that it doesn't really get any better, or even any different.
-
Nintendo PowerBut like so many iterations of the franchise(Star Wars fans think they've got it bad), Tactical Assault ultimately disappoints. [Dec. 2006, p.110]
-
Star Trek Tactical Assault is a limited strategy combat game with a few nice Star Trek touches, but after several encounters, hypersleep may beckon.
-
The irony that the gameplay isn’t so tactical is quite apparent after you realize you haven’t been fighting your enemies so much as you’ve been spinning around in circles at them.
-
No matter how much you love Star Trek, no one can escape the curse of off-screen objects.
-
Although the game contains an interesting tactical set-up and numerous races to choose from (Klingons included), the game just isn't fun to play. Not only is it unnecessarily complicated, but also slow and sloppy.
