Sonic Classic Collection

Despite a bad sound effect here and a dropped frame there, this is still Sonic the Hedgehog at his old fashioned finest.

It serves up a brilliant dose of retro platform action in not just one but four classic games, all of which seem like a perfect fit for the Nintendo DS.

A bit more bang for your buck would have been great, but retro gaming still doesn't get much better than this.

For NDS owners who don't know the blue hedgehog and for fans of Sonic, the collection offers everything the successful series offers – fast gameplay, classical platformer elements and hidden places all over the levels.

Worth for those that want to remember the classics or for those that don't know them.

Sonic Classic Collection compiles some of the greatest platformers of all time in one convenient portable package.

Sonic's first iterations are just as fun as they ever were. But we've played them many times already, and in many different platforms. DS users who never played any of these games can enjoy it, but if you have any other version, there is nothing new except a bunch of roms emulated.

It is a pity Sega hasn't added any new feature, like extras or additional modes to encourage the player.

Sonic Classic Collection is a good, but flawed compilation for the Nintendo DS that just screams "small budget, short development cycle!" It is what it is: four great Sonic games accurately ported to a half-assed compilation.

Still, if you want some old-fashioned Sonic speed on the DS, this collection will do you: it comprises Sonics 1, 2, and 3, Sonic & Knuckles, plus the Knuckles-ized versions of Sonic 2 and 3(without any Lock-On Technology). [Apr 2010, p.87]

Fun, challenging and frustrating in just the right measures, the collection highlights the respect Sonic holds as an old-school entity, even though the years that followed spelt disaster and led to his dethroning as a modern icon.

Sonic Classic Collection could have been a true must-have for DS-owning Sonic fans, but sadly it's marred by enough small issues to put you off playing for too long.

Sonic Classic Collection brings to life six original Megadrive games on the Nintendo DS. The new features include a new save game system and some extras with collectible pictures. The game has same issues with the framerate and with the visuals, but preserves the same original playability.

Fans of the classic Sonic experience get exactly what they want with this collection of games, but it fails to deliver something we haven't already played on any of the other consoles. If this is what you wanted in the first place, then Sonic Classic Collection is your cup of tea. Anybody that is wondering if the blue hedgehog has learned any new tricks should wait for a new game or try to pick up Sonic Rush cheap.

Sonic Classic Collection is a decent collection of four good and old Sonic games. The chances however are that you played all of them on some way before which makes this Collection nothing special but decent in the most literal sense of the word.

Instead of creating another awful 3D resurrection of Sonic, Sega gives you a chance to relive the classic titles. Unfortunately, the port isn't perfect, the graphics aren't smooth and there's no additional content.

Despite the undeniable quality of the games themselves, for everyone else who's probably played these exact games various times before, the motivation to put your hand in your pocket is probably a lot weaker.

If you are a die-hard Sonic Classic fan that owns a DS and you have managed to avoid every single re-re-release of Sonic The Hedgehog known to man, yes, this DS collection might be worth checking out. Just be prepared to see your heart break into little pieces of disappointment.

The original Sonic games have aged brilliantly. Unfortunately this collection has been made with little-to-no effort resulting in framerate issues that bring them down.

This really is nothing more than lazy emulation of a much loved series.

Still fun and intense, but there's no justification for the frequent slowdowns.
