I'll start by saying this is one of my favorites of all time. I played it years ago when SNES was in it's prime. I played it years ago when SNES was in it's prime. The game holds up on DS and even on the steam version where I'm currently playing jointly with my wife who is also loving the experience. The DS version added an extra dungeon that felt unnecessary but also not intrusive. Across the various versions there are some small translation differences but they don't bother me much- it's largely the same game.

The story is not simple, but it feels simple it's easy enough to understand but the game has a couple of terrific twists that keep you guessing. There is also a suprising amount of optional content and side quests that really enrich the game and add more depth to the characters. In my younger years I was suprised how technical the game seemed to be both with these side quest options (especially later in the game) and the combat, including dual combo's and triple techs was amazing back in the day and is still super fun today. I'm shocked more games havn't adopted this style of RPG to be honest.

The character development was great in it's prime and still very much holds up. The characters each have personalities and animations that draw you in. The sprite like style of the graphic holds up much more than I thought it would over the years... again it was well done in it's prime and still looks solid today. The music is amazing and iconic in my opinion and I can hum most of the major themes by heart (i've enjoyed the re-imagined versions and chrono symphonic is a great listen for long time fans.)

Spoilers. It's an adventure across time but the ways that you change the timelines felt very significant back in the SNES days and they still do a good job of being solid gameplay mechanics. There arn't any real puzzles but you have to navigate the world in different areas and times in order to gain access to the story and eventually side quests. This game is wholesome, complex, fun, and replayable for die hard fans. I play it about once every 5-10 years at this point. It's my favorite RPG. :)

I never had the pleasure of playing this game when I was a kid. I got to play it on my DS for the first time in 2019. And just WOW. A masterpiece of a JRPG. The graphics hold really really well compared to other SNES JRPGs of the time.

This simply is one of that games that establishes the pinnacle of a genre and you know it’s gonna be difficult to surpass. Great gameplay, brilliant graphics and colors, funny characters and techniques. Yasunori Mitsuda as a composer delivers it as always and great story on top of that. Hope to see the dream team composed by Sakaguchi-Toriyama-Horii once again in my life.

Furthermore, while the story may not be quite as deep or intricate as the best of the Final Fantasy, Persona, or Xeno franchises, Chrono Trigger's narrative is executed to perfection -- offering loads of charm and wit, twist and turns, and wonderful characterization from beginning to end.

To this day, Chrono Trigger remains a truly special game.

This is an amazing RPG and I hope they re-release Chrono Cross also. The downsides are few, but the main one is that it is easy. Especially on New Game +, this game needs a Hard mode or something. The animated cutscenes that were added in the PS1 version are still here, but in my opinion, lame. While classic, the cover art is still wrong since Marle (the girl pictured in the pinkish coat) is using Fire Sword with Chrono even though Marle uses Ice magic. This is the original art on the SNES case, so... yeah... Anyway, get this game. Expand

Combat against regular enemies is as simple as mashing the 'A' button to attack, and does not get very complicated unless you are fighting bosses. The game makes great usage of side quests, and before finishing the game, you can take on a load of other small quests. Another feature Chrono Trigger offers is the Pet Arena, a fun feature that has no effect on your actual game. You get a pet, teach it attacks, let it evolve, similar to Pokemon, and duel it out with the computer. Another thing Chrono Trigger seems to lack in is the multiplayer function. It lacks something like a co-op storyline, which would be a fun addition, but nevertheless, this game is definitely one of my favorite. Expand

The graphics for the most part are completely untouched from the origonal version, although some might complain about them looking dated, you have to keep it mind this is a game from the mid 1990s and for that time period, these graphics where considered excellent back then.

The story is beautifully written and is for the most part, pretty easy to follow, what events you do over the course of the game can change some elements of the story and even which of the multiple endings you get.

Gameplay is pretty standard for a 1990s RPG with the exception of the action timer and attack combos which where fairly new to RPGs back then but are rather common now.

The music is beautifully composed and had a lot of effort put into them.
Some of the music tracks that went unused in the the older versions of this game are now used in the DS version.

The game has replay value to those willing to replay the game to get all the rare equipment and to see more of the alternate endings.

If you are a major fan of RPG games or are just curious to see this masterpiece of a game that shows a major step in the evolution of RPG games, I would very much recommend a purchase.

Simplified towns reduce 'boring' exploration, and the characters were interesting and had just enough personality in their dialog that you could get a good feel for them in a little amount of time. The short lines spoken by your NPCs during cutscenes really help flesh out the characters and engagement, but more character interactions (like Dragon Age or Tales of Symphonia) would be nice. But hey, this is a rather old game -- I can overlook that.

The time travel element played past experience well & instantly engaged you in new areas, as you wonder what has changed between the different times, and why.

The combat system is simple yet effective. Item management was simple and unobtrusive. Standard JRPG fare, but well done. The story and world are the main attraction. Multiple endings were a nice touch.

However, he quickly gets dragged through time on a mission that includes early man’s struggles with the Reptites (a race of highly intelligent reptiles), an overzealous queen seeking immortality, Guardia’s war with an enemy wizard four-hundred years prior to the fair, and a depressing future that Crono and his friends must prevent. Only thing that holds it back is the numerous pacing issues & somewhat lackluster characters

    Graphics: 10/10
Now, this does not even come to close to standing up to modern games in the area of graphics, but it did raise the bar for its time. Seeing as how Square rarely fails in this category, it comes as no surprise that the backgrounds are nicely detailed (such as a night sky full of stars and sunlight sparkling on the water) and the different sprites for each era are mostly unique (it seems they really love to re-color that imp sprite though).

    Audio: 9/10
    Original:
The soundtrack for Chrono Trigger is beautiful. There are songs that will make you sad—whether or not you’ll cry (or admit to crying) of course is a person-by-person result—and others that will get you pumped for the approaching adventures. Generally, there is only one moment in the game in which the music does not fit, and it plays as a joke anyway. The sound effects all seem to fit their respective actions.

    Gameplay: 9/10
Chrono Trigger uses the turn-based combat system with options to have real-time or not. Your characters advance in levels by gaining experience from battle (bet you didn’t see that coming). They also learn “techs” (presumably short for “techniques”) from their experience in these battles. The section of the combat system that really stands out is the use of double techs and triple techs. As the name implies, the characters use their special attacks together to form more powerful ones. However, the best part is without a doubt the lack of random battles. That’s right, you have monsters on screen and the occasional set encounter that you can’t see coming, but you will NEVER get into a battle while simply walking around the world map. Overall, the gameplay is enjoyable (unless you just can’t stand a turn-based battle).

    Replay Value: 10/10
Chrono Trigger is the type of game that you just can’t stand to put down (even after beating it). Fortunately, the developers had the foresight to realize this and made thirteen endings. Perhaps more influential than the vast amount of endings is the new game + feature. You start the game with the same items, techs, and character levels from your last save before beating the game. You can quite possibly find yourself playing through the game far more than the thirteen times for the different endings.

Overall: One of the best games ever, but still overhyped & not the flawless masterpiece everyone proclaims it to be. Chrono Cross was a better overall game, but that doesn't take aways from this game's quality at all. Overall: 9.6/10

    The Good

    - interesting to hear monsters talking. Their dialogue is pretty amusing.

    - being able to replace party members at any time is very convenient. Party members that are on the sidelines also scale in level, which is good because when you want to switch them in they won't be super underleveled.

    - there's not too many buffs and debuffs which I personally like. It has the basic ones, which makes the game not too shallow and not too deep. Games like FF have so many buffs and debuffs, sometimes I lose track of them and it just get a little confusing.

    - the battle animations are phenomenal for its time

    - it's nice that they wrote dialog for each character so the cutscenes will still fuel organic no matter who you have in the party.

    - I like the fact that KO'd teammates have 1 HP after battle. This way I don't have to waste a revive on them

    - debuffs don't stick after battle. Don't have go into menu just to heal after. Saves time.

    - really interesting enemies. Like snakes that absorb each other.

    - before pokemon did the trainer line of sight battles, Chrono trigger did it. Those eye balls in the time egg chapter, you have to wait til they close their eyes if you want to avoid them. The rats in proto dome in lab 32, you have to dodge rats to not get stuff stolen from u.

    - moving around during text box is great. Allows freedom to check out the area or leave without having to mash to the end.

    - the menuing is very very fluent and informative, without being over complicated.

    - button remap is really nice. Allows full customization.

    - music is awesome

    - Chrono trigger was way ahead of its time. With the battle system, with the menu layout, with wild encounters, with interesting environments interactions, and enemy types. And even story structure, the whole time travel aspect actually worked out pretty well, with surprises like magus being that kid from zeal, and being able to resurrect Chrono, and all those other characters that's came to the future whom you meet later on in the past. for a piece of media, not even just a video game, this was very innovative.

    - different dialogue lines depending on who's with the party during cutscene

    - seeing the game over scene after losing to lavos invokes a certain feeling.

    The Bad

    - it's difficult to see the difference between second floor and first floor. As well as corridors that are behind walls. I know the SNES is quite primitive, but I still feel they could have done a better job. Maybe they could have added better Shadow sprites.

    - I wish Chrono had dialogue. Mute protagonists can work but I don't think they did it well here. The other characters have plenty of dialogue, but they don't really interact with Chrono directly. When they refer to Chrono they say it in the way as if he isn't there. So most of the interactions in the cut scenes of the party makes it seem like Chrono is like a ghost. Which in turn makes me feel like a ghost. Mute protagonist is supposed to make you feel like you are in their shoes, and I am in the shoes of an empty husk. Link is an example of a mute protagonist done well. Other characters refer to him directly, and he does have to do nuisances like facial expressions, physical reactions.

    - I felt they could have used maybe just a set of different variation of the reaction sprites. There's literally only one suprise sprite. Sometimes the char seem like they are overreacting cause the sprite is so dramatic.

    - I couldn't go back to kingdom of zeal to get black rock, meaning eternal darkness tech was lost to me forever. I hate not being to back track to important things. I can understand an aesthetic item being missable, but not an item that allows me to learn one of the strongest spells in the game. Missed forever. After zeal fell, the Blackstone should still be attainable either somewhere else, or logically, I should be able to travel back in time, back before zeal fell, to attain black rock.

I've a few choice words about this "remake". The graphics are still SNES quality, and other than... Tacked-on touchscreen controls (why do I have to double-tap every selection during battle? Doesn't that defeat the purpose? Even the Pokemon DS game has better touch controls than that) Animation sequences that add nothing to the game (they feel like nothing more than a throwback I've a few choice words about this "remake". For this, you to pay a premium $40 pricetag for a 10+ year old game that most people have played to death. When Capcom released Resident Evil Wii it was a 2-year old game came improved controls, every feature available AND a cheaper price. I LOVE playing Chrono Trigger on a handheld, and I LOVE having the top screen menu-free during battle, but the only reason this game gets insanely-perfect reviews is a decade's worth of fanboy deprivation. Originally released on the Super Nintendo in 1995 this, slightly enhanced, DS remake yet again demonstrates exactly why Chrono Trigger is considered a classic of the genre.

It is worth mentioning from the start that if you played the SNES or PSone version you will find very little new here aside from a few touchscreen features and extra options. Despite this Chrono Trigger still stands the test of time admirably in large part thanks to the brilliantly told story that puts most modern efforts to shame. Anyone who has played any of the earlier entries in the Final Fantasy series will know what to expect in terms of gameplay. Setting out to save the world you soon run into like minded people happy to join your quest and building a balanced party is, as ever, key to success.

Player initiated and random turn based battles are present but do not occur too often allowing the game to maintain a good pace throughout. Add to this a large(ish) world map that the player is free to explore as well as thirteen possible endings and it is hard to believe that this game is nearly two decades old.

The story is great, and the graphics and battle system were ground breaking in their day. I would also note that my 4 and 6 year old kids watched me play the entire game, from start to finish, and enjoyed the entire game. The game shines storywise. The major plot is interesting to follow, but it also doesn't outshine the side stories and character developments of each member of our colorful cast. The moments of peril are exciting to witness, and the emotional bits will leave you with deep feelings. There are also some plot twists that remain a novelty to this day in regular JRPG storytelling, which is guaranteed to take the player by surprise.
The graphic part also still holds up to this day to Pixel Art standards, thanks in great part to the character and world designs, making each person you meet and place you traverse memorable. Also, the concept design by manga legend Akira Toriyama is also an immense plus to leave everything oozing with style.
Unfortunately, the experience suffers in regards to gameplay. While the fights manage to still be visually enjoyable with the dynamic movement of the characters, the interactivity per se is not much, and the whole thing might get repetitive when it comes to facing regular monsters. Also, navigating certain areas sometimes can be frustrating due to the limited movement on the overworld. Lastly, the pacing of certain moments with a heavier focus on the story might leave you that feeling of "Okay, can I play now?".
In conclusion, despite the design flaws of its time, Chrono Trigger still manages to be a great game and a real classic, as well as really deserving of the remake treatment that many old games are getting in these modern times.

I bought it for the PSX ten years ago but those menu load times... At any rate, I was really excited to finally play it due to being universally praised as one of the best if not the best RPG's ever. I was disappointed and in fact, I think this may just be the most overrated game of all time.

The combat is the best aspect of CT by far. Fun and completely unique at the time, I wish there had been more games modeled after it because I very much enjoyed it even now, and I never felt bored due to the combat. There are techniques to unlock and combine, and the strategy introduced by deciding to wait and use 2 or 3 allies for a skill is a lot of fun. The fact that this was the first game where combat was on the main map is very cool and works great.

Secondly, the graphics are beautiful, and still perfectly acceptable and playable now in 2013. I remember back then seeing pictures of Chrono on the bridge and thinking about how incredible the game looked. The variety of animations for each attack and technique really go a long way towards making things feel fun and fresh. The colors are bright and the spells are impressive.

The music was very good for the most part. I know a lot of people say the music is incredible and for a cartridge it probably was, but I'm spoiled by even earlier games on the Sega CD that had truly fantastic music, specifically the LUNAR series. Still, CT's music was pleasant, I enjoyed it, and it got the job done.

The several side-quests and how they change the future are cool and interestingly done. Personally I don't think there was enough change at certain points in time, and while I won't hold that specifically against the game, this leads me to the bad...

The premise of the plot was good, however, I find that the ball was dropped here in execution... again because of the lack of depth and HORRIBLE pacing. The story is very simple, and virtually everything in the first ten hours of the game progress through happenstance. The problem with that? The game is only 20 hours long!! This is by far the shortest RPG I've ever played and from one plot point to the next, the story moves along with very little discussion or explanation, major plot points are explained and over with nothing more than a sentence or two. Less time is dedicated to major story quests than most games side quests, and you just kind of stumble into things where nothing in the story has any weight because it's all over and done so quickly.

While I generally thought the characters were alright, the issue with the story is represented in them as well. I would like to have loved the characters, I really would. In the end I just know so little about them though. Everyone has so little to say and at any opportunity to express anything, discuss story, or get to know them at all, it's over in a couple of sentences, they're just so flat with little meaningful dialog between themselves and anybody else in the game world. This leaves me with no particular love or interest with anybody from the game.

I honestly don't understand why this game would have been so highly regarded. It had tremendous potential, to be sure, but it never really got off the ground. Given the length alone I would have never spent money on something so short, and yes, I played through to the end of the game on my first playthrough. The extra endings are fun to see and can add some replay value, but the game is so short, and the story so thin that playing again and again would be very repetitive. Besides that, a lot of the endings don't really add a lot or tell only part of the story, and some are accessible after very little time. I won't get into the lack of variety in the area's and how strange a decision it was to not make legitimate towns with everything accessible on the over world but oh well. Anyway, I think my score is generous, I wish there had been more to experience.

For it's time, the graphics/music/gameplay were top drawer and, as an old school gamer, I wouldn't consider them of utmost importance anyway. A decent RPG needs three things...
Decent characters, character development and an involving storyline. CT falls down on the first two, and because the storyline of the game isn't actually that long, it's all over far too quickly.
It doesn't help that the game isn't that difficult either. The map system allows you to skip past most fights, and the one's your forced into can be overcome without much effort.
Considering the number of much better games in the genre on the SNES, this is a game I would recommend you play, but it isn't one I'd suggest you develop any real expectations of.

Or how Marle is only important during the first 1 hour of gameplay before her character becomes void of all meaning.

And how about those sudden spikes in difficulty? One moment it's smooth sailing and the next you're facing a boss who deals 180 HP of damage every round. But hey, I'm a big kid. I can handle it, babe. I just simply choose not to, and play a more balanced and better designed game.

Grossly overrated. Having not played the original I can only assume it hasn't aged well. A game's is "depth" is only one factor. The gameplay is repetitive and the story is lackluster. Not only that but the game is missing the one feature of the original that could have brought this game up to a 7 for me: Co-op. It's a shame to see so many respected reviewers using such nostalgia bias in their reviews. Although the remake (not reinterpretation) of a game from nearly 15 years ago suggested that it would be heavily reliant on nostalgia. Expand

One of the worse SNES RPGs. It seems as though Square Enix missed the point of video games.

FF7 is way better lol. Worst game sqare has made. I mean, the main character doesn't use the buster sword, so, it's already a 0/10. Only redeeming qualty is Frog.

La mejor versión oficial puede ser la NDS porque pone lo mismo que el original más escenarios extras y un final que conecta con el Chrono Cross

In 21st century we have so many so much better games. Here you will encounter nothing more than mediocre graphic, mediocre sound, poor story and frustrating gameplay. Honestly, I can't see why Chrono Trigger have all this cult.

If you are not huge fan of jRPG or you don't have high amounts of nostalgia I strongly recommend to play something else.

It's is a clunky hybrid of turn-based and real-time (ATB). Enemies pose no threat and deal a fraction of the damage the player character is capable of dishing out. There's almost no interesting spells or status effects, important debuff/buffs, every ability simply deals damage. Dual/triple techs are just boring variations on the same 'do tons of damage' or 'heal tons of HP' template. There's nothings that messes with Equipment-in battle, interact with terrain or change the very rules and mechanics of the battle, It's so bland and dull. Compare to any turn based games like SMT, SaGa, Etrian, even Chrono Cross or other FF that use ATB, etc. It simply lacks enough depth and challenge to be compelling since you have no real customization, builds or skills which hurts replayablity when every play-through is the same each **** There's barely any exploration, it's a time travel game that is somehow completely on rails. Your only choice is how soon you want to end the game by teleporting to Lavos which is the most disappointing aspect. There's no practical way to beat the game 'early' on your first run, so you pretty much have to get the standard ending, then all the other endings are NG+ replay gimmicks that basically reward you for being over-geared at particular stages of the otherwise linear game. The multiple endings are even shallower than the overall narrative: they're either superficial variations on the same happy ending/easter egg/joke endings. They're pointless and contribute nothing to the game.

Time travel is not even used in any meaningful way: instead of traveling back in time to prevent Lavos from becoming a threat, the characters travel forward in time to face him at the height of his power and beat him up.

There's no entertainment when the gameplay loop just spam high level techs with a occasional AoE heal. Who the **** finds this "fun"? It's repetitive and devoid of sustenance and dungeons might as well be linear corridors. It's not even only overly simple, it's overly TOO shallow. There is no challenge and variety is non-existent. Abusing double and triple techs really just destroys anything, and when Chrono receives the Luminary spell, you don't even have to see the pixels on the screen again . The lack of challenge is a major problem when that's 90% of the ****ing game. Its hard to remain engaged when you are just sitting there watching animations play out and not actively engaging with the mechanics. Even Magus' (which people like to claim is a difficult battle) is completely bypassed by doing the same thing you do all game. The game has zero customization which is supposed to be the point of a RPG? There is no player involvement, except in equipping new gear which is just select the best one in every scenario. You can't assign spells or roles to anyone they are just attackers and healers who basically play the same. It's boring as a rpg, and there's no strategy to the actual game part. Just look at the other rpgs that came out CT's era that surpass it in all areas
    >Phantasy Star IV
Came out over a year before CT. Has multi-character techniques like CT, more interesting character abilities, vehicle combat, and the ability to setup turn macros, lots of customization
    >Lunar
Character placement/positioning matters far more than in CT as characters/enemies have movement ranges & have to be adjacent for melee attacks, far more interesting movesets.
    >Lufia 2
Has limit breaks, a roguelike-dungeons, and far better non-combat gameplay with the tight puzzle & maze design.

Of the 100+ techs/spells in Chrono Trigger, less than 10 have a range that is something other than "single/all", and you can't even manually target their area of effect. Almost all of CT's tech/spells function just like they do in other jrpgs.

In addition, you have no way to influence positioning in any meaningful way, since your own characters can't move. Enemies can technically move, but they do so extremely sporadically and are just motionless 99% of the time. They also do the typical jrpg thing where they jump at you to attack and then jump back to their position on the battlefield, so their position is basically static.
    There is no friendly fire.
Your character's inability to move means you can't take advantage of enemy positioning like you can in other rpgs.

Your character's inability to move also greatly reduces the scope of tactics. In other rpgs, you might want to spread out characters to prevent them from all being struck by an enemy's area of effect attack. Or you might have to make a sacrifice: for instance, if one of your party members is in close proximity to the enemy, and attacking them would mean also damaging your own ally through friendly fire.

Even these basic tactical options are absent from CT.

CT is just a really poorly designed games for little kids, praise the visuals and music all you want, but the game has massive problems on the game part. 0/10.

No, I do not "owe it to myself" to play this game. Unfortunately, I made the mistake to play it. It is fundamentally flawed.

I hated every second of it. Why do people like this game so much? Everything is simplified to the point of being the literal, utilitarian definition of what makes a mechanic. To see people call it polished is very surprising.

The game is virtually unchanged in its core, having a new script re-write, but retaining the visuals, music, character designs, interface styles, and options of the source material. At the same time, Square Enix also ensures that this is the definitive version of Chrono Trigger out there, as the game comes complete with every option you could ever want for touch vs. button control, two or single screen display, or game pacing and difficulty.
