    I’m still surprised that Nintendo ever thought that there would be an audience for Yo-Kai Watch 2 in the west, but boy am I glad that they did.

    A solid sequel to the original, Yo-Kai Watch 2 opens up to the wild world outside of Springdale. With even more wild and wacky Yo-Kai to befriend and the added benefits of Internet connectivity, Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls stretch out to a wider breadth than ever before—though perhaps a slightly shallower depth.

    Yo-Kai Watch 2 keeps the iconic feeling of the first title, but adding some ingredients to boost the original formula. It succeeds, but it also feels like we have seen the game before. It's a sequel in narrative terms, but not from a gameplay standpoint.

    Yo-Kai Watch 2 has a charming world full of details and colorful characters but just a few innovations compared with its predecessor. Maybe all the new elements in the series like online medal swap and competitive battles should have been from the start on the first game. At the end of the day, is good to see the localization of this sequel for the big fans of the series.

    It may not be as tight of a package or have enough variety in its quests, but the additional multiplayer components and new Yokai make this worth picking up.

    Yo-Kai Watch 2 works great for someone that never played the first iteration; however, those who did will receive the same experience with no new game mechanics or elements that provide a different feeling. Whit no animation upgrades and a corny narrative, Yo-Kai Watch 2 is an RPG that took one step forward and two —or maybe three— steps back by not contributing with something fresh.

    Yo-kai Watch has a great degree of potential, so it's tragic to see Level-5 squander it over fears of upsetting their massive cash cow. (In Japan, anyway.) This sequel carries the same sense of spooky whimsy as the first game, but unfortunately doesn't lose the underlying tedium. If you're looking for an alternative to Pokemon, you might want to see if the next game fixes Yo-kai Watch's woes—if it gets localized, that is.

    The aforementioned combat system has very good and very distinct mechanics, being that, if you don't make the right decisions during a fight, the whole combat can turn against you (obviously lmao). The story is great, so much so that in my opinion it is the best of the original trilogy and the fact that much of the map is recycled from the previous game does not detract from the fact that it is entertaining and interesting to explore it again, as it brings small changes and new yo-kai that only appear in specific places that can only be reached through a prolonged period of exploration.
    Without a doubt, this is the best example of how to make a JRPG.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall I really do enjoy this game, yet at I ask my self how much time I should spend playing it. Once the main story is said and done, you can attempt to trek through the endless postgame. I dare say...that Yo-Kai Watch 2 has even more content than SUPER SMASH BROS ULTIMATE! And that's saying a lot. Completing everything in this game even if you count out the deluxe version is just insanity. Sure it feels nice to befriend a new Yo-Kai, but someday your going have to put this game down and move on to the next one. It may be somewhat impossible to clear every single challenge in this game, but you can at least set new goals for yourself every time you revisit it. And trust me, I think you should have some fun with those spare profiles. You never know when you'll some rare Yo-Kai and use some wireless, trading tricks with your old 3DS in order to send them to your premium profile. It takes forever, but it's worth like in Pokemon.I find it irritating that Yo-Kai Watch has fallen into the version exclusive gimmick, but its hard to complain when I purchased all three versions years ago. Even though I'm fortunate, I'm still focused on building ultimate Yo-Kai Watch teams made up of Yo-Kai that are available in any version. Like in Yo-Kai Watch 1, I think its important to train the Yo-Kai that you've earned instead of by luck from the Crank-a-Kai. And yet I'm still hoping to collect all of the available Yo-Kai by challenging the Infinite Tunnel and Mystery Way routes daily. Keep in mind the game isn't forcing you to take these daily challenges. It's easy to confuse this with a mobile IOS game. That being said Yo-Kai Watch has a wide variety of those. Some days I'm just cursed and can't befriend any Yo-Kai even with all of the fancy techniques on hand. So I think about building teams made up of automatic recruit Yo-Kai. And the the gift Yo-Kai in this game are just as grand as the one in Yo-Kai Watch 1. So you can Nuzlocke this game with little problem! Just wait for the light or "Reverse Santa" will come to clean your clock. Jibanyan can no longer evolve, but you can still get a free Thornyan or Baddinyan in Shopper's Row. It gets even better when you get to recruit a whole stream of mighty Classic Yo-Kai in Chapter 6. Heck, now you can even befriend a mini version of Sproink and you his super defense to win some Official Battles challenges with ease. On top of that, theirs tons of new Yo-Kai exclusive weapons to power up a wide range of weaker mascot Yo-Kai, like Jibanyan's Memory Chime raises attack and speed.As for the game itself, the decent story comes with a wide range of new dungeons. The haunted school makes a return with some new obstacles, Harrisville's mountainside course, San Fantastico's beach cave, the battlefield of Flatpot Plains which is way to big in my opinion, and the Old Springdale Wicked Yo-Kai Apocalypse. Compared to the lineup in the first game it's lacking a bit, but it make up for that in the post game. Divine Paradise looks like heaven and feels like hell, the Infinite Tunnel is a test of sanity, the crazy Gates of Whimsey stages, and Mystery Way is just full of surprises. I think Yo-Kai Watch levels are pretty underrated, some are just oozing with creativity. I also like seeing Terror Time color schemes on the mini dungeons, Mystery Way really knows how to get the player hyped with tons of rare Yo-Kai in the area. It's like I'm exploring a wonderful dream sequence with every crazy level. And with fun side quests to boot this game just gets better and better the more you play it. Their's always a new secret to uncover in this collection of adventures. I think this game is a good reminder of what modern games need, variety. I'll say it again, variety with content and variety with challenges. Crazy boss fights and simple mini games. Worlds with a focus on realism and fantasy. It's something with multiple faces, every time I look at it I learn so much with each walkthrough. Even if you're just playing the game for hours and messing around they have an awards to go with your dedication. Every time I return to this series I find something new to love about it. Level-5 just puts much care into their work that you can smile even with the lightest humor dialogue. While the luck based challenges make it suffer the story and art design has always been brilliant. This game is a reminder that a title can't just be great, but its needs something to return to. And there are plenty of great things to return to here. This game even gives you great sense of identity with the ability to select any of your Yo-Kai friends to walk with you like in HeratGold & SoulSilver.Customizing your bike and profile. Collecting various trophies with a vault to go with them. This game just fills me up like a rich sundae. Yo-Kai Watch is all about exploring and interacting with the unusual.     The slow plot sets up a long list of tutorials that never seem to end. The game is constantly adding things for you to do or improve your Yo-kai throughout the game. New game modes (not necessarily new to the series) and enhancements constantly keep you moving forward.

    The game does have a not so great over arching story. It's not that the story is not great, it's just not presented well, or early enough. You play through "episodes" in the game. Each episode not really having it's own story, just a giant check point that you hit after a rather long line of fetch quests. Expect every person to have 1 or 3 things for you to do before they will unlock what you need from them. Main story missions require that you meet a certain number of specific missions prior to advancing.

    I played the demo, and liked Blasters. I bought the game, to find out that it took me 6 hours to get to the check point that unlocked Blasters mode. Beginning of episode 3, and it really just tosses it to you, only mode that really isn't unlocked with a mission. It's like, oh, by the way, here's this. Blaster's is also a local play, offline mode only. I was hoping for online with this, but looks like that will never happen. As a 35 year old man, I'm not thinking many of my friends are going to buy this to play with me.

    The game is incredibly adorable though. Cuteness oozes even from the ooziest enemies. The graphics style does a great job of making you feel like your apart of a world. Just try not to get lost in the trains between towns, a needlessly long journey to Grandma's house I created for myself. You eventually unlock fast travel though, making it super convenient to get around later in the game. Early on though, expect to be huffing it every where.

    The battle system could have been better if the mini games you played had been more plentiful. You will repeat the same 4 or 5 mini-games throughout your play through. The over-world Yo-kai never really present much of a problem, their knocked out rather easily. Online battles are a completely different story, and I suggest you save doing those until your 20 hours or more into the story. They don't separate you from high ranks, so you can get clobbered early game when you unlock it pretty easily. Though, even a loss nets you some battle points (BP), looking at the more costly items, your best bet is to use that precious time improving your Yo-kai rather than grind out 10 BP a match on a total loss. Other than the BP, nothing else is gain, so don't think this is an easy way to level up your Yo-kai.

    The Yo-kai befriending (catching) aspect does need some work. You have this nice Medallium (book with a list of Yo-kai you have seen/befriended), it doesn't say the best way to catch the Yo-kai is. You can feed Yo-kai food to increase your odds of becoming friends, but the book doesn't bother to say what food they like. Some give hints (some of which are really bad hints) while others say nothing at all, and you have to guess or just hope you can get it without food.

    It'll take you a while to unlock all 387 Yo-kai. The game is teetering on fun and boring. A better combat system versus A.I. and a better way of knowing which Yo-kai like what, would go a long way to make it feel like you have the skill to gather these guys, rather than it being random and a simple battle.

    A good online battle system is what makes the game worth it. If you like PvP, the grind to get there is worth it. If you just want a solo adventure, you can do better else where.    … Expand
