Mario jumps into 3D for his main 3DS debut game in Super Mario 3D Land. The game itself feels like a hybrid of Super Mario Galaxy (Wii), New Super Mario Bros. (DS) and Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES). There is a total of three save files on the game card with the ability to assign a Mii avatar for each to know which file belongs to a specific person if you are sharing the game with another person. The game music soundtrack is varied with both unique tracks and remakes and remixes of classics tracks that fits well with the mood of each stage. The stages are somewhat short and some come off as looking a tad bit bland while others are absolutely beautiful. You are usually rushed along to the exit being unable to fully enjoy the atmosphere of the stages due to the timer's limit. Stage types can range from multiple Mario staples like grassy fields, canyons, ghost houses, sewers, lakes, Koopa airships, clock towers, Snowy mountains, desserts, caves, castles and many more. Mario is playable along with an additional playable character (its obvious who it is) that needs to be unlocked later in the game. If you lose multiple lives on a single stage, you are given special "beginner" power ups to help aid you through the levels (keep in mind that this does not happen in the Special worlds which will be mentioned later and that using them will permanently lock access to a specific reward later on in the game). The game has a total of 16 Worlds to cover from the basic first eight worlds to the more challenging eight "special" worlds with increased difficulty and/or lower time limits and/or other unique challenges to prove your skills. It should be noted that it can sometimes be hard to judge certain jumps when the 3D feature is disabled but its not in any way impossible to play only in 2D mode. Overall, unlike New Super Mario Bros. for DS, Super Mario 3D Land does not contain minigames nor a wireless/wifi multiplayer mode so once you fully complete the game or get bored of it, there isn't that much to come back to unless you are willing to start the game from square one and relive the adventure all over again but with that in mind it is still a high quality single player 3D Mario platforming adventures with a bit of something for people of all skill levels. The best 3DS title so far. Awsome gameplay, very challenging levels, cool 3D effects. Although I wished that giant Mario and yoshi. But even without them the game turned out really cool!

This is a great Mario game. Beautiful graphics really show off what the 3DS can do. The 3d is actually an organic part of the gameplay and not some tacked on gimmick. Super Mario 3D is an awesome game. It makes great use of the 3DS's main gimmick, the 3D hardware. The gameplay is something Mario hasn't seen ever before. The objective is to get to the flagpole, just as in the classic Mario games, but it combines gameplay with Super Mario Galaxy in the fact that you can move up and down, and left and right. This creates an amazing game environment to play in

The worst thing about Super Mario 3D Land is that it is the same old Mario you know and love. In other words, it retains what makes Mario games great (sharp controls, fantastic level designs, an intelligent camera, simple without being overly simple, many classical elements and characters that are core to the Mario series, a catchy soundtrack and fitting sound effects, colorful graphics, etc.) but fails to significantly innovate. Super Mario 3D Land is just one of those games that is difficult to give a score to: giving it a high score dismisses the fact that there is really nothing new here, something that games in other less-loved series would not get away with. On the other hand, giving it a low score is a disservice to how truly fun the game is. In the end, I'd give it 8.5 out of 10. This acknowledges that Super Mario 3D Land is a really fun game, while keeping it from the greatness of a game which scores a 9 or higher. If you own a 3DS, then you should definitely get this game; it is currently the best game for the system in my opinion. The style of platforming this game has is a great, unique idea. It's like a 'side-scrolling 3D platformer'. I would have liked to see the 3DS tech be used more in this game. Super Mario 3D Land is for everyone who complains about every Mario game being too similar. The game includes eight bonus worlds for people who find the main worlds too easy. 8/10.

The game starts off incredibly easy and becomes gradually more difficult, the special worlds for example are a challenge to complete and I've been playing Mario for 20 years and I found some of them challenging. Attaining the fabled "5 star save file" is a challenge in itself and I achieved this last night.

This game is good, and i enjoyed it til the end (The second one). But, again, it's the same Mario experience I've seen on all Mario games since the old Super Mario Bros. for the NES, the only difference is the 3D, which, by the way, is more like a window behind the screen. Nothing pops out of the console. And since it's more of the same stuff, i'm getting tired of Mario games.

Super Mario 3D Land finally legitimizes your purchase of the Nintendo 3DS. For a franchise that has seen it's hits and misses, Nintendo finally seems to have cultivated a thorough understanding of how best to combine the classic platforming elements with fresh new gameplay mechanics that no one else has done before, and on a system that, until now, has seemingly been relegated to hosting gimmicky, half-hearted attempts at innovation. Everything that makes a Mario game classic, fun and challenging is here, but don't let the first half of the game fool you. The ease with which you will conquer it only serves as a method of drawing you in. It's when you get to the special stages that the difficulty ramps up significantly, and the challenge is nearly impossible to ignore. You will not want to put the game down. You will want to finish every level, collect every star coin and get every golden flag. With the addition of Luigi, whose jumps are slightly higher and whose run is slightly faster, the gameplay changes just enough to keep from getting stale on the 2nd play through, then the unlocks keep you coming back for more. By the time I unlocked the final crown level, I had died hundreds of times, cursing and shouting, nearly driving my wife insane. Then I played the crown level. Anyone who says this game is too easy, obviously hasn't played it enough to unlock this level. If you want an even greater challenge, do what I did and don't use the Tanooki suit. Further still, try beating it without using the moving platform that Nintendo mercifully provides for you at the end of the level. You'll know what I mean when you get there. Admittedly, once you play the level hundreds of times, you'll know how to conquer it rather easily, but it is a steep learning curve.

But let's not forget the graphics. They are stunning, easily rivaling and in some cases surpassing that of the Mario Galaxy counterparts. The 3D effect only sweetens the deal and Nintendo even found a way to incorporate the effect into the gameplay as well. At no point while playing did I ever want to switch it off, which isn't something I can say for other games on the 3DS. It was never a distraction, at least for me. Nintendo has crafted a beautiful environment to immerse players in and the polish is pristine. The animations are also top notch. Smooth and seamless, this game is a joy to look at and play.

I really can't speak highly enough about this game. It is a masterpiece and a must-own for anyone who has a 3DS. For someone who doesn't always have time to sit through a 30 to 40 hour gameplay experience, Super Mario 3D Land is a perfect match. Not too long, not too short. Everything is just right. Get this game.

I'm going to make what many would brand a controversial statement, but here it is anyway; Super Mario 3D Land is the best handheld game ever made! And please know that I am not some gushing Nintendoist fanboy. My personal handheld weapon of choice is my PS Vita, but it's first-party masterpieces like this that stop me from ever chopping my XL in.

Indeed SM3DL exceeds (or utterly smashes) expectations in every single department: gameplay, graphics, animation, use of 3D, soundtrack, controls, content, level design, difficulty, variety... the list goes on and on. And on. There's even a surprise or two along the way!

I've so far ploughed more than fifty hours into this deeply accomplished and wonderfully nuanced 3D platform adventure, and I enjoyed, nay loved, every single minute. I've completed everything, found every secret, and unlocked every level, and yet, I'm still far from done with my escapades in 3D Land. A year-and-half since it's release, I still regularly find myself picking it up for twenty minutes here and half an hour there. Sometimes longer.

I said at the top of this mini review, that Super Mario 3D Land is the finest handheld game of all-time, and it is, but having now given the matter further thought, it's much more than that. It's one of the best games of all time, period. If you've never really got into handheld gaming or you're yet to play this 3DS classic, I emplore you to give it a go. If ever there's a handheld game to truly blow your socks off, it's this one.

I grew up with the original Super Mario Bros trilogy as a kid, on the NES. Super Mario Bros 3 was my favourite game for many years. I stopped caring for Mario much since the PS1 generation, but this game really made me happy and woke up memories.

It has plenty of levels and secrets, satisfying platforming, good use of 3D (though you can play it without it just fine), incredible music, it is lengthy enough but ideal for short bursts of gameplay. It has very nice graphics and smooth animations. It is has very good replayability, and it can be hard in later levels, but never punishing.

It is also very charming with the usual Super Mario charm, and features elements from Super Mario Bros 3 like musical themes. Those brought a tear to my eye. Never though small things like this could bring back childhood memories.

All in all, this is a must have game if you own a 3DS.

3D land is not as good as SMG2 or NSMB Wii, and it is not the best 3DS game, but it is still a lot of fun. The 3D effect in the game is amazing and the graphics are the best I have ever seen on a Mario game.

The main theme is not that exciting, and is used too often, but some of the other tracks shine. Bowser's castle theme comes to mind. Overall, this game is a great buy for a system with an extremely lacking library. This is the first killer app for the 3DS. Do yourself a huge favor, and pick it up. This game is truly amazing. It allows for much easier gameplay for younger kids and more challenging levels for older. And I love the Tanooki Suit and other power-ups. Nintendo really outdid itself, just like they did with the Super Mario Galaxy's, Sunshine, and others alike. My only problem is that Bowser Jr. is not in it. Still, Boom Boom, Pom Pom, and the many forms of Bowser are very fun.

it may be a pretty good game, but due to the lack of vs. mode in single player like it's not really a good game, terrible new tracks, ruining the original retro courses music and terrible new characters, the critics should at least have given this game a mixed or average review instead of generally favorable reviews.

The graphics pop, and the wonderful 3D inclusion really was intuitive and useful within the game. This was the first game where I actually kept the 3D on through the levels as it wasnt bothersome and it added to the gameplay. I only found myself actually NEEDING the 3D in a countless amount of areas within the just under 100 levels of gameplay. The major replay-ability of this game just helps add to the excitement of replaying through the game as well if you played through then you know what I'm talking about. I don't want to ruin anything for anyone. By far one of the best final Bowsers fights!!!!

    Don't Read --Spoilers AHEAD!!!!----

Well after you beat the game you unlock the special land, which is a whole different game in itself. Though not all the lands are completely different, they do add a good challenge to those who dare to beat the game outright. The game went from too easy, to actually very challenging. A friend of mine only lost a total of 2 lives in the first land while he lost 45 in the special land. It can get pretty challenging.

This definitely wasn't the best Mario game ever but it was definitely a great first attempt on the 3DS, and showed that the 3DS has yet so much more to come to unleash to power behind the console.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's no denying it, Super Mario 3D land is a hit. It's a lengthy game that is not to repetitive. There is a great ton of content. You have the usual 8 worlds, but then once you beat the final boss, you unlock 8 new special worlds. These special world do mostly contain levels that were in the normal 8 world's, (there are some new levels though), however they have been changed a little to be harder. The airship levels were really good and some of my favourites. It is repetitive, but in a good way that doesn't get boring quickly. Honestly, this is the some of the best level design the series has ever seen. The majority of the levels are short, but there are so many of them it doesn't matter. fan favourite power ups such as the tanuki suit returns with a handy and fun new power up called the boomerang flower. This boomerang suit is really useful and is good for taking out enemies at long range. You still need to collect star coins, so there is a little similarity to the new super Mario bros games here too.
I'll admit that the story could have been better though. However, this game is like Sonic Generations, the level's are soo good that it doesn't matter that the stories meh. (which coincidentally, both these games came out in the same year). In the first special world, you have to save Luigi and once you have done that, you play as him in any level you want. The graphics are great in this game and this is one of the very few games on the 3Ds that the 3D mode is actually useful for and isn't totally pointless. Honestly though, the 3d gimmick on the 3ds is soo underutilized. Music's pretty decent as well.
This game has a terrific final boss and secret special world 8 final boss. The majority of the bosses in this game are great, which is a nice touch as the majority of the bosses in the 2D games since new super Mario bros Wii have been bad. If you own a 3ds or a 2ds, this game is a must buy. This is a Gem of a game, and again, a must buy. And for once, a Nintendo game isn't over priced. They should be given a medal for that. Even Metacritic agrees which is saying something, as you can't usually rely on this site for a fair, true review on any game.

If you want a really fun, bite-sized Mario experience that's more about light-hearted platforming than challenge, whether it be to binge or to play a few levels of on the go, this game is for you! Mario 3D Land is a fun Mario game. It isn't particularly memorable, but it's a fun game nonetheless. I mean it's 3D Mario, how can you mess it up? It's also in actual 3D which is kind of cool. They always feel so flued and satisfying, and it's no different here. There really isn't even that one level that sticks with you though. I mean none of them are bad but none of them are great. Even though It may be forgettable I never felt it dragged, I mean I beat it in 2 days but, I definitely had fun. Even though this is probably the worst 3D Mario, I prefer this over the majority of 2D Mario. I give Mario 3D Land a 8/10 and a B+. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Man, even my least favorite 3D Mario games are still really good!

Super Mario 3D Land manages to successfully combine the 2D and 3D aspects of Mario games. It's a nice new take on the old formulas, and it'll surely give off something fresh to 2D and 3D Mario fans alike. Conceptually, that's pretty much it for this game, but that alone manages to make this game really fun.

Most of the time, the level design is definitely fun, albeit not too memorable. Though I really like the Clock Tower stages, those were really creative. The Super Leaf is back, and it's a little underwhelming that you can't fly but can slowly descend. However, I think that this change complements the level design well overall, and would otherwise be a broken game if done differently. There's also the Boomerang Flower, which just allows you to shoot boomerangs like a Boomerang Bro. Nothing too special, but neat nonetheless. I also love that the collectibles returned in this game in the form of Star Medals. Those make the levels far more interesting, and gives it more replayability.

Once you beat the game, you gain access to another 8 worlds with altered versions of existing levels and new ones altogether. You even get to play as Luigi now! I love the levels where you have a very strict time limit and you can collect timers to increase it. You can also run from the Cosmic Clones which mimic your every move and follow closely behind.

A big downside for me would be that this is one of the easiest Super Mario games I've played. While I said the Super Leaf complements the level design nicely, it has its moments where it's extremely OP, and can be used to bypass every level almost effortlessly. I also really hate the Invincibility Leaf. This power-up just tells you "hmm it seems like you suck at this game, guess you need to be invincible for every level you can't do yourself" Seriously, you can take advantage of every level using this thing! I also wished this game had a bit more inspiration and that there was additional content outside the main adventure.

However, Super Mario 3D Land does more than enough to stand out from its 3D predecessors. If you're looking for a fun little Mario game to pass the time with, I can recommend this one!

This game is just what people need in their lives- a bit more Mario! it’s structured like a New Super Mario Bros. game but with an extra axis, and a lot like the Wii U’s Super Mario 3D World (all the way down to the title), which can both serve as turn-offs or turn-ons depending on how basic mario’ed out you are. Mario’s move-set is a more scaled back version of the typical 3D control, and can only move in 8 directions. The difficulty curve is just right, and it’s a very pleasant surprise to find out that there are 8 more worlds after you beat the main campaign and then to unlock Luigi shortly after. The graphics are quite good for 3DS standards. The game can be very basic throughout, and if you want a more fleshed out and unique Mario game then try sunshine or one of the galaxy games, but this is a must for your 3DS collection sooner or later. A fun and charming platformer, but can be tedious to complete.

Pros - The 3D effect is very well implemented. There is a great use of obstacles to take advantage of this 3D effect. For example, at one part, there is a thick spear that shoots out towards you. With the 3D effect it looks amazing. - The platforming is classic with new twists incorporated from previous Mario titles.

    Pros

    - The 3D effect is very well implemented. There is a great use of obstacles to take advantage of this 3D effect. For example, at one part, there is a thick spear that shoots out towards you. With the 3D effect it looks amazing.

    - The platforming is classic with new twists incorporated from previous Mario titles.

    - There are various types of power ups you can attain, which include takooni Mario, fireball Mario, and invincibility Mario.

    - There are pipes that lead to coins and other goodies taken from Super Mario bros.

    - The game positions the camera at different angles in certain levels to enhance the 3D experience. For example, in a level, the camera is positioned at the top so things appear to bounce up in front of you.

    - You get to play as Luigi after main quest completion, he can jump higher.

    - 8 full worlds with a higher difficulty (which the game really needed) after main quest completion.

    Cons:

    - At some points, it is difficult to tell exactly where you will land from a jump because of the 3D effect. This can be troublesome when facing enemies or platforms that move around

    - The game is very easy. The only challenge given, is the special levels you get after you beat the game. The special levels should have been the difficulty for the first part of the game.

    - The game offers unlimited invincibility if you happen to fail a level too many times. I disagree with this feature. The developers should let the player learn from their mistakes and overcome the obstacles on their own. Since the main quest is really easy already.

    - Having the game make you hunt for star coins near the end is more tedious than fun, since some of the star coins are hidden in ridiculous places. Not only that, but you must reach the end of the level again in order for the star coins to register after you have collected it.

    - Too much revisiting the same places. First you complete the 8 worlds, then you complete 8 "special" worlds, which is the same as the first 8 worlds with more obstacles and enemies. Then finally, you have to revisit and beat almost all of the worlds in order to obtain enough star coins to unlock the last level.

A beautiful, charming, exquisite game that begs it’s self to be played in 3d. The levels are unique and colourful. The amount of levels in the actual game is quite impressive and the items are fun and creative. I love this 3d mario game so much, it’s the only one that I 100% because it is very addictive and easy. Overall, just a joy to play!

This game is the definition of perfect, almost every level is fun and special, Most of them are really easy but there are some challenging ones. The bosses aren't really good and not hard enough except some of the bosses at the end of the game. This is the best 3d Mario game after sm64 and the best game avaliable on the 3ds.

Mario is back! In a classic Mario-fashion you jump your way througheight worlds, where you battle goombas, koopas and the main meaniehimself, Bowser. This game is never particularly difficult, butgradually advanced to a challenge that feels just perfect. Fun, varied and guaranteed to make you smile.

The Nintendo 3DS has had a slow start, but I feel this marks one of the first important games to come out on this system. I can't say it's a must buy, but is really close for those who have already picked up a 3DS. The amount of content in this game along with the varying degree of gameplay makes this one of the best Mario games I've played in a while.
