Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D

PES 2011 3D is a great first attempt on the 3DS, with the slick controls carrying over swimmingly. For next year's inevitable release, we're hoping to see some online features, single-cart local play, some stat-tracking and a few extra modes that use the 3D capabilities to their fullest.

PES 2011 3DS is already a good game with identity and reveals success in adapting to 3DS, a more powerful system.

It's one of the better handheld soccer games and the Master League mode is impressive, but it lacks content and the AI is problematic.

While it occasionally feels lumbering, and is starting to show its age now – especially when set alongside the flexibility of PES and FIFA on home consoles – the thrill of netting a vital goal is as great as ever because you know you've earned it.

The 3D looks pretty smart, but this is the same old PES I've played many, many times before. It's still a smart game of football, but as with a number of 3DS launch games, it's not making the most of the hardware and doesn't really offer anything new.

PES 2011 3D is a typical launch title, that practically begs for a sequel. The base is strong, but on a lot of points, unrefined. From the very get go you'll be able to tell that more development time would have benefited this game in many ways, but for now, it's a nice taste of whatever awaits us in the future.

It's slow. It's low scoring. And it's difficult to pick up. In that, it's likely a soccer fan's dream.

Finally a portable football game that stands on it's own to feet. The 3D effect is excellent, and this game gives you hours of footballing fun on the 3DS.

The core gameplay in Pro Evo 2011 3D is enjoyable, but it's constantly failed by the rest of the cart's fundamentals. Even with the game's limitations and shortsighted exclusions of some modes, the few options available to customize your experience makes for one of the best portable soccer games on the market. That may not be saying much, though.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D nails the on-pitch action but lets itself down with a limited feature set. If you absolutely have to play a 3D football game this is currently your only option, but be aware of all the missteps such a title carries with it.
