In addition, this version is a bit more challenging which is a welcomed addition seeing as most of these games tend to be a breeze when it comes to difficulty. The wormhole travel is also fun and the ability to catch a lot more Pokémon from different regions in this version is also a great addition.

It's not all perfect in the Alola region, as a Pokémon player for nearly 22 years now, these modern games are really starting to push it with the amount of chatter and robotic actions from the npcs you encounter or travel with. What I mean by this, is that there is simply too many moments throughout the journey where you are stopped in your tracks to have a lengthy conversation about topics that are repeated and regurgitated over and over and it is becoming tiresome and it completely breaks the pace of the story.

Please for the love of Ultra Beasts, Gamefreak please cut this down or implement a skip button, I sometimes find myself just forgetting about the plot entirely because I'm just spamming A + B so I can get back to exploring and battling, which is what makes these games fun.

+ Fun gameplay (battles & explorations)
    + Excellent visuals
    + Great soundtrack
+ Refined arena (Pokémon Stadium) mechanics
    + Loads of side quests/activities
    + Great legendaries and lore
+ The surfing mini game is fun with a classic reward
+ Poke Pelago & Refresh are fun

    - Too much dialogue that is un-skippable, narrative was never this series' strongpoint
    - Wormhole travel controls are awkward
    - Some useless side activities imo
    - Uninteresting npcs and side characters

I also have to mention that I am not sure I like the sequels direction they are taking, feel like the additions made in the sequels should be included in the original version for a single release, rotating with a refresh of the older games in between.

Overall this is a solid effort that should have been part of the original release, but they did get it right regardless, and the Alola region proves to be another solid entry in the franchise that will be fun for fans of the series to explore. This game is an 85/8.5 for me.

In the time running up to the game i was not motivated for the game, but because of the nostalgia factor, i had to try it. And boy is it good! Like every game, this one has its flaws too but let's start with the positive ones!

    Positives:

The story gives you more freedom than the previous Alola games, it still shows some handholding but it has been reduced a lot!

Where Sun and Moon were lacking significantly in the Post game factor, this game makes up for it and even beyond that! The real fun begins when you get to Poni Island!

New looks on the menus and the battle icons etc (personally i find this nice to see!)

They kept the trials which made the original Sun and Moon so good, and I loved it!

    You can collect Totem pokemon!

Team Rainbow Rocket... do i need to say more?

You can collect all the legendaries, which is nice for the ones that don't have Pokemon Bank or the younger ones who have not had the chance to catch them before.

    Negatives:

A good amount of the story is not too different which would have been nice.

Nothing substantial changed in the core gameplay which i would have loved to have!

    Summary:

All in all this is a very good game that you can out hours into and you have satisfaction over! It is enjoyable for both younger and older players and has a lot more to offer post game! A solid 9/10!

While not my favorite, this is clearly the best Pokémon game ever. It has great graphics, an engaging and exciting story along with great gameplay, even making something as simple as running around collecting stickers crazily addicting. The game is also much harder than any other Pokémon game, which also makes it much more enjoyable rather than the lack of challenge in previous games. 94/100

-Team Rainbow Rocket. For anyone who takes interest in the bad guys of the main games over the past 21 years.
-Parallel universe ultra recon squad giving story elements and designs new to the series.
-Best trainer placement of any Pokémon game to date by far. The karate guys on champion road, the golfer at hokulani, lotta laughs.
-All legendary Pokémon. Probably the biggest sales point for fans of the series.
-Charmander and all the other starters also available to catch so it’s pretty cool for old people with nostalgia. Same was with Rainbow Rocket.
-Background Pokemon. Much like the trainer placement, the sense to have a Pokémon walk by the window outside or come down a chimney etc is superb. No value to find other than the satisfaction of seeing some neat Pokémon walking around. The rare chimney one was funny too.

    The Pretty Good
-A ton of new sub events. Some of these are awesome, some not. Ditto becoming human being official stuff in the games was awesome etc.
-The photo club was a lot more fun than I expected. Still don’t think there’s enough reason to spend a lot of time ther but it’s neat.
-Surfing is also surprisingly a pretty fun mini game. But also not something I feel the urge to do too many times.

    The Not So Good
-Main flow of game is pretty much the same as Sun and Moon, even though much of the story is different.
-Some new backgrounds are pretty bland areas with some exceptions as well.
-Some things in the game are jokes that will go over the majority of everyone’s head most likely. The new gym for example.
-Nothing groundbreakingly innovative. But this can be said regarding almost all Pokémon games since the original. They stick by the if it’s not broke don’t fix it mind set, which does have its benefits.

Pokemon Ultra Sun is a great game. The story is great, even though the dialogue can be a little long sometimes. Some of the battles were tough but I still enjoyed them. I do miss the pokemon gyms a little though but I did like some of the challenges there. I love poke pelago and wonder trade. It was a good swan song to pokemon on the 3ds.

Exciting new elements and features for the first time featured in the series, from new ways to get legends, to new secret stories to discover, including outside the main one, there's something for everyone, it's objectively one of the most developed and content stuffed pokemon games to date, dozens of good elements and features were brought back and further developed and ironed one way or another.

For me Sun and Moon were the best Pokémon games until now with the best story, and I was wishing Ultrasun and Ultramoon to improve them adding new things but they removed great scenes from the story and changed Lusamine personality and now she is not as great as it was in SM. But well, the games still being great and i still loving Gen VII, for me the best gen until now.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pokémon Sun/Moon was one of the best experiences I had in the Pokemon world! The region is great, vibrant colors everywhere, Alolan form Pokemon, customization of your character and despite not having the best story all around, it was still enjoyable. Still, when Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon was announced I was expecting something along the lines of Black/White 2, a sequel to the previous games. Instead, and the trailers of the game show that they advertised a "different" Alola region. Was to be expected the same timeline but eventually, "mid-game" as the director of the game said, "the timeline will change". Unfortunately, in a game with 4 islands, the changes start in the last one and until then the story continues pretty much the same as in previous games, except for the addition of a new team and some new pokemon. The issues of Sun/Moon were fixed but this still felt more like a DLC and not a full game. It was the first time ever I felt buyers remorse with a Pokemon game and I regret a lot paying full price for it. Still, if you never played Sun/Moon you should go for this one. Expand

The story of this game is very engaging, and the characters fulfill the definitive personalities we've come to expect from Pokemon characters. This is the most original of all Pokemon games to date, but it didn't let go of most core qualities that fans love about Pokemon.

The difficulty definitely spikes in this game, but its nothing a casual player can't manage. It's simply speed bumps that require more training of your Pokemon, which in turn cause you to explore more of the region and find all of the secrets hidden within.

For the first time in Pokemon history, you truly feel as if the journey is yours, and not the character's on the screen. Between taking pictures with you Pokemon, petting them, exploring the region with them, and fulfilling your quest with them, its a true Pokemon journey you won't forget.

Combining all of this with the fact that a small handful of new, non-mythical Pokémon have been added mid-generation for the first time in the series, and that the Pokédex has been expanded to natively include over 400 Pokémon catchable in the games without trading, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon have managed to make the region of Alola feel even more alive that it did before – and that’s quite the achievement.

In some ways, it feels like these games have come too soon; Pokémon Sun and Moon are still so fresh in our minds and we can’t help but feel that the Ultra versions would have felt more special – and therefore easier to justify purchasing – if a little more time has passed. You’d be forgiven for not wanting to jump back into the same world again so soon but, in their own right, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are truly incredible entries to the series that deserve to be sitting amongst the elite Pokémon titles. If you’re ready for another trip around Alola’s beautiful islands, this is the way to do it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While not the objective best Pokémon game, obviously, Pokémon Ultra Sun is my favourite game in the series by a long shot, and by far my most played as well. A massive list of Pokémon to discover, a story that takes you to other worlds, and plenty of changes both big and small.

If you hopped into Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon expecting the game to just be the same as Sun and Moon with tiny increases in difficulty like I did, you’ll be hit with constant surprises. Several important battles have been added, removed, moved, or altered. Many totem Pokémon have been swapped out for a completely different Pokémon, which can catch you off guard if you prepared for the battle in the original Sun and Moon. And of course, the big legendary battle against Ultra Necrozma. It’s easy if you know it’s coming, but in a blind playthrough, you have no idea what to expect and are very likely to lose, possibly multiple times.

The gameplay lefts some things to be desired, with not enough innovation (for me) and the actual changes being either minor or too different from the “formula” to be worth sticking with. Ultra Sun makes up for these semi-shortcomings with some fantastic new Pokemon and Pokemon forms, a lot of fun and interesting characters, and a superb postgame. The storyline is easy to follow and fun to play through. Ultra Sun is an ambitious and exciting entry in the series. I would personally place it in my top five games (though it is probably fifth). If I could use one word to describe it, Ultra Sun is just straight up FUN. I don’t know if I conveyed it enough in the above review, but I love Pokemon as a series and have fun pretty easily no matter the game. Ultra Sun did very little to take me out of that fun atmosphere, and tried a lot of new things to make me feel the fun even more.

The lack of gyms is a strange but workable trade off because the trials act as a gym challenge all together. Some of the totem Pokemon can be tough with the wrong team, but can be be with practice and strategy. Locations across the world are mostly good and some bad. There unique towns and geographical sites that look great, but then you have your standard grass routes and small beaches on nearly every island. The new Pokemon are definitely interesting. Some have bad names and lackluster design, but others are creative and can be viable in multiple battles. Some of the better designed Pokemon include: Decidueye, Incineroar, Lycanroc (all forms are great), Salazzle, Golisopod, Silvally, Bewear, and Mimikyu. The characters are not bad at all, Lillie is introduced as the damsel in distress but grows with the player nicely. Hau is okay, could use some more edge but is decent to battle. Gladion is okay, wish we could battle him more. Team Skull's goal is pretty lackluster but at least they are fun to battle. Guzma fits as that team's leader because of his style. Lusamine was a bit better in Sun and Moon but her role in Ultra Sun's story is good. I think the biggest character disappointment was the fact that we didn't get to battle Professor Kukui the moment we become champion like in Sun and Moon. Nothing against him as a character, but Game freak did botch one of the coolest moments in all of Pokemon. The story is good too. The Ultra Beasts still remain a strange edition to Pokemon, but at least the story allows them to fit into the world rather than just placing them in around the islands for the trainer to randomly come across. Necrozma is especially a great addition and a powerful boss to fight when it turns into Ultra Necrozma. The legendary guardians are weird looking too, but the story allows them to fit into the game and gives them a role, which is important for making a good legendary. The post game of Ultra Sun is one of the strongest in the entire franchise. While definitely overkill of fan service, Rainbow Rocket adds that extra story after the elite four that a lot of other Pokemon games lack or cannot quite pull off (*cough Sword and Shield). Though i do not know why the bosses all have legendary Pokemon on their teams. It would make sense for Giovanni to own Mewtwo, but most of the bosses never caught a legendary in their stories, and it can make a tough battle even tougher if you go in unprepared. It's a weird fit, but at least the challenge is there. Overall, Ultra Sun is the most surprising Pokemon game I have ever played. While there are some errors and gripes, this game is definitely in the upper half of good Pokemon games and deserves at least one play through by fans who want to gain the full experience of Pokemon's main series games. Great postgame and difficulty, maybe the hardest Pokémon game to date.

But the story is ruined, the original story in the Sun and Moon games was better by far. Not just the story, some parts in the gameplay were better in the original games too like less mandatory tutorials.

Very good game. Definitely worth playing. Great story, the new pokèmon look great, the music is amazing, and the characters are some of the best in the series. There are two major flaws: very long tutorial, and your character is always smiling, even when something horrible happens, and it looks very stupid .

The ultra wormholes made hunting for the legendaries even more fun than in ORAS, but the remixed themes of the legendaries didn't hit nearly as hard.
Doesn't even matter though, as the dopamine burst of catching my 5th shiny pokemon in the wormholes made up for that.

And with a history of changing the sequel style games up so much that they are almost brand new games in the past, (like Black/White 2 or even with the old Crystal game), this just seems pathetic in comparison. The game gets a 7 because the original Sun/Moon were awesome and really moved the series forward in technology. If you own the original games, there's really no reason to buy this one. Pros:
+ Variety in Pokemon: WAY better than Sun and Moon's low variety.
+ Ultra Space: Minus the lowest quality motion controls, it's a pretty cool concept.
+ Lack of National Dex: UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT! I hated that the Shiny Charm was locked behind the National Dex in previous titles.
+ Ultra Megalopolis Battle: Honestly, the only battle I liked aside from the Champion battle

    Mix:
= Soundtrack: Meh... Pokemon soundtracks aren't that great in my opinion, and this game didn't fix that (nor did Sun/Moon, which pretty much almost the entire soundtrack was from those games). Aside from the Legendary Final Battle in Ultra Megalopolis, it was meh.
= Story: Well... Pokemon isn't really about story isn't it? THEN WHY IS THERE ONE IN THE GAME ANYWAYS? I did enjoy some parts of the story, but for the most part it's just as good/bad as Sun/Moon.
= Gameplay: It's literally the same thing as EVERY OTHER POKEMON GAME BEFORE IT (and hopefully not after it).

    Cons:
    - The Dual Versions: Why couldn't this just be one version?
    - Side Quests: Again, it's an RPG. Why can't effort be put into RPG things?
    - Motion Controls: What idiot thought Motion Controls and Pokemon would mix? But then again, at least there's an option to turn them off.

    BRUTALLY HURTS THE GAME:
    - Barely any difference between Sun and Moon and USUM: This alone hurt my experience with my Ultra Sun playthrough. I mean, there are still quite a number of changes, but they aren't that frequent. May as well just have this game be DLC as a second file...

Overall, the game is good, not great, but good. I believe it warrants a 7/10 from me.

There are still some negatives, however. The story is basically the same, if not worse when you factor in Lusamine's now confusing motivations. It gets a little monotonous to play through, with the slog of the first few hours, intrusive cutscenes and hand-holding, and the fact that it's pretty much a retread of Sun and Moon. The new Ultra Space areas you can visit are, for the most part, just glorified hallways (although the visuals are still EXTREMELY impressive, otherwise).
If you skipped the 3DS games and are wondering whether to get S/M or US/UM, just go for US/UM. It's the definitive version of the Gen 7 games.

But in many ways the classic Pokémon ways were abandoned with this game, but more about that later. Pokémon Ultra Sun is not a sequel to Sun ( as it was with B/W and B2/W2 ), but it is rather an upgraded upper version as it used to be in Gen I to IV. The changes are not generally pretty subtle and do not warrant a separate release, in my opinion. Now lets get to the actual review. When it comes to Pokémon games, I am very conservative. Actually, I am pretty conservative generally speaking, but even more so when it comes to gaming. I have gotten used to the only very slightly changing gameplay of the main series Pokémon games over the years and I love them for it. They are the only console games I emulate on my PC. And I do not want them to change. But this time around, they have changed. And not for the better. First of all, I do not think, that I have ever played a Pokémon game that would be so easy as this one. In all possible ways, you are getting help all the time. All the time the game holds your hand. The EXP share system is ridiculous and wrong, you overlevel everyone else almost immediately. There is always healing and items everywhere. You get so much money right during the first hour of gameplay that you cannot possibly spend it. Roughly 5 to 10 times more than in previous Pokémon games. Ultra balls at lvl 10. Every two minutes there is someone there to help you, to heal you, to show you the way. And I could go on. It very quickly became a painful experience for me, gone was the sense of adventure and exploration I have always gotten from a Pokémon game before. Now I know that these games are theoretically made for children, so maybe the difficulty should not be brutal, but Pokémon games were always meant for children and the difficulty went down very noticeably here. Other than that I do not really like the settings, I was expecting myself to like the Hawaii, but it just does not feel right for Pokémon for some reason. The characters are obnoxious, the new Pokémon are ugly as always and the game does not even try to force you to use them, as the original 150 form a majority of all the wild Pokémon. No Microtransactions, marginal SJW. I played on PC using the Citra emulator.

I have not felt this bad about a Pokémon game for a very long time. Actually never before. I have barely gotten through the game. I hope next Gen will be much better. Final Verdict: 46%

I know full well Pokemon is known for giving slight alterations between game versions however, these were to be sequels/alternate time lines to the original Sun and Moon versions. I do not feel there are enough differences to warrant an entirely new game. When Black and White 2 were released, despite being direct sequels, they still offered more variety than these. I can't recall Black and White 2 using the same cut scenes, NPC positions, and word for word dialogue for majority of the game. Most of the differences in the new games are held until the end which makes it feel like a chore to get through the main game to see especially with no option to skip the massive amounts of hand holding. Personally, I feel this should have been a $20 DLC that was added onto the existing Sun and Moon games or Game Freak should have just let Sun and Moon be the last games and use that effort on the Switch game they are working on.

    The positives:
    - Art style
    - Music
    - If you haven't played Sun or Moon these will feel new to you
    - Some new "mini games"
    - Totem Stickers add some extra reason to explore
    - More post-game content than Sun & Moon

One of the most hand-holdy Pokemon entries to date. This isn't done in a helpful way but the game is aggressively easy. All the NPC characters are push overs. No one in the game wants to win. You beat people and they are like awesome job here's a bunch of free items to make your easy game baby proof. They aren't just pushovers in terms of their teams, but their characters inherently want you to win. Not a believable or motivational character to be rivaling. The Rotum-Dex is one of the worst additions to the franchise. Literally giving you information "you didn't ask for," hopefully you didn't need your map while doing it cause you can't get it while he tells you the same thing every 4.5 minutes in the game. The Ultra version does have a better Post-Game with grabbing legendaries through the ultrawormhole jumping, though the mini-game gets old and time-consuming after 3 goes , and there really isn't any other post-game apart from the battle tree. The story has great potential but ultimately got child-proofed as well. Being rid of HMs was a giant QOL improvement, but you have to dress up and a ridiculous outfit to ride those Pokemon. Graphically This has the best looking pokemon you'll see though you'll need a New 3DS if you want to see them without lag, cause the old systems can't handle the game well. Shiny hunting is pretty good in this game. The SOS battles are a cool mechanic and great to work with to get IVs as well. I wish the game had a camera that was more static or at least spent more time on the pokemon. Zooming in on my characters never-changing facial expression during battle is weird and useless. I liked the Pokemon designs. Alolan forms is a great idea that got deflated by only giving them to Kanto Pokemon. I also wish they didn't remove the national dex in game. You can still catch all the Pokemon but they don't have numbers or appear in your dex. It feels like they're not really part of your adventure, just also there non-canonically.

Ide give it the same score as the original one, however, this game is just a pure ripoff. Nothing has changed from the original. You get one new legendary Pokémon... That's it. Yet another example of Nintendo's greed.

    This game is rubbish.
One of the worst game in the series. It's just a fast way to make money, it's sun and moon with some and little changes, as S/M have their problems: the gameplay is borig, there are a only couple things that i liked about, the story is the same but with some "fixes".
And the game isn't hard at all, is horrible game design that make it harder like the 1v2 boss

Completamente innecesario. Si ya acabe harto de los personajes y la historia de Pokemon Luna, que me hagan repetir la misma historia con los mismos personajes para llegar a lo mismo es denunciable. Lo unico salvable de las dos entregas son el Team Skull, Guzman y su tema.

Giving you advice and crap you did not ask for. Its the ABSOLute worst thing in these games. At least in SwSh, they had the 10/10 idea to make Rotom shut its ugly mouth.
Very dissapointing and bad unnecessary games.

I try to find the good in some games. But most of the good I could find in Pokemon Sun as well, again, making it feel like DLC when I find the good things that are exclusive.
To be fair, and address this, my score would be lower, but there were some people who didn't buy Pokemon Sun. So, that's why my score isn't lower.
But, at $40, Pokemon Ultra Sun feels like overpriced DLC with another cartridge and a few extra features. It is ridiculous.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game does NOT worth 40$ for those who have played Sun or Moon Before ! An entire year of wait for just a tiny DLC of the Original game. And, Oh my... The Music of the 7th gen is one of the Most TERRIBLE thing i have seen in a video game ! (Still not worst than Sonic Boom).

So this game have like almost NOTHING New : Just Two more Legendaries and a story that have changed just a bit and this game is so disgustingly easy ! (Just like Sun and Moon) Team Rainbow Rocket is pretty much the only good NEW thing about this version.
But in the end, i just realized how Lazy GAMEFREAK are for the Fans right now. Always aiming for young audience only and Never making a Pokémon Game for Adult ! (And i mean by that, taking the game more seriously, i don't mean sexuality or extreme violence). But everyone is going to buy it, because ITS POKÉMON of Course !

In the End, i really wish they were less a lazybones and start making a Revolutionary Pokemon like i always dreamed about it. But this game show me how FAR we are from this. Please do NOT buy this game. They don't deserve your money.

I don't care how much better the end game is or what little gimmick they added that was not in sun & moon. If any smaller game company did this they would be shamed for asset flip, fraud and lack of effort.

If you already played sun & moon, there is no good reason for you to buy ultra sun & ultra moon unless you are a hard core fan. In which case you are not going to take this review

This game is by far the worst Pokemon game ever made. This "game" feels more like $10 DLC, except it's being sold as a $40 separate game from Sun and Moon instead. Instead of looking forward to getting to a new route or town, I feel dread. Why? Because I know there's going to be a 10-15 minute cut scene. Remember when Pokemon games were mainly about collecting little monsters and battling them, with a little sprinkle of story here and there? Well, that's not how it is anymore, apparently. When I say you will be stopped every time you enter an area, old or new, you will have to watch a 10 minute cut scene, I am not exaggerating. It feels like I'm playing one long, poorly written cut scene instead of playing a Pokemon game. The only good thing about these games are the new totem stickers (essentially a better collectible than the Zygarde cells in Sun and Moon) and the many new older gen Pokemon now available on the islands. These games are okay if you haven't played the original Sun and Moon, but if you have, I strongly recommend not buying this overpriced DLC. Expand

This game was such a rip off. Pokemon Sun DLC would have been a more accurate name. The changes in the game were minimal with a few extras. The new Z moves for some pokemon look so cheap. This definitely should have been DLC content and not sold as an entirely new experience.

They centre the whole story around the edgy rock and then expect us to be surprised when they show us the forms we saw in the trailers everywhere. The fight between edgy piece of glass and The box legendary was so lazily done, I could do it better on scratch. They didn't think about how it would make sense for a Pokemon battle, because both of the legendaries have some kind of advantage over Bl2 black box. They are running out of ideas and are trying to get as much money as they can before people realise how dead Pokemon is. Expand

The Tutorial basically never ends, the game is bogged down with cutscenes that I couldn't give a **** about, and it's probably the easiest pokemon game yet. The series just gets worse and worse each generation. There's no focus on gameplay, with almost all the focus on dressing up your character and waifu-pandering.

Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon is still fantastic, especially since the original was a major shake-up to the decades-old Pokémon formula. The update may be overly samey to someone who has already played Sun & Moon, but it does improve upon the base game in several ways. The new version is a must for newcomers to either this current generation or to Pokémon in general.

Pokémons improved in a visual and gameplay way. Devs could let go the monster management, but otherwise the changes are definitely for the better. If you have a weak spot for Pokémons, this is your game. [Issue#282]

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the definitive versions of Generation VII. Fans that already made the trip to the Alola region might find that it takes a while to get to the juiciest new additions to the game, but diehard Pokémon fans and those that held off on Sun and Moon will find a lot to enjoy. The games are truly robust experiences, and the new additions help flesh out a game that was already quite strong. I could detail more about the story changes and enhancements, Mantine surfing or Team Rainbow Rocket, but not much else needs to be said. This is a terrific Pokémon experience that has only gotten better.
