While the professor Layton games still were quite unisex games you will feel quite out of place when you are playing Mystery Journey and aren't a completely girly girl. Dress ups, interior decoration and Katrielle always feeling the need to stuff herself with food (a character treat she seems to share with absolutely every female lead character of Japanese girl series) - these so far were more prominent than an actual storyline. The stories are just small single chapters with close to no connection and the plot and also the characters really lack charm. While the professor Layton games were serious/emotional with a touch of humour (absolutely fitting) I have the feeling this game tries to be funny with a touch of seriousness but horribly fails at both. The voice actors often say something different from the text on screen (and it's actually sounding better than the text on screen). And what's with all these pointless two second long cutscenes? Also the translations sometimes seem quite bad, not only in the English version which others have already mentioned here but also in the German version that I played.
Are we really sure - is this really a game developed by Level 5 or a bootleg copycat that tried to make some quick cash with a lackluster phone game that for whatever reason was later copied to 3DS?

I just replayed all Layton Games again and this is just by far the worst one. The puzzles, which in the Professor Layton Games always had a twist, are made for children, there wasn't one where I had any kind of difficulties and none of them needed any second thought.

The stories are just completely boring, without the length needed to build up any excitement and comming from the 3DS games (especially Azran Legacy and the Phoenix Wright crossover) this was just pure disappointment. The characters weren't even the problem, even though Ernest made me so mad with his bs character, but what it really was, was the child friendliness, even more present than in the other games. I think the TV series shows the route they took with Lady Layton really well and sadly this is not what me and any other fans was excited for the 3 years this game was in development.
The Layton Franchise is a great one, but this entry just isn't worthy to be called a Layton game or even a puzzle game in general

This game only has 4 different... types of characters, as I refer to them.
Type One is the one that's super adventurous, and sticks their nose into things that may or may not be meant for them. This role's filled by Katrielle.
Type Two is the constant, loyal companion to Type One. It's basically all Ernest (Katrielle's assistant) is.
Type Three is the person who doesn't give a crap about the adventures. AKA Sherl, the talking dog.
And Type Four, well, that's just random strangers who don't know and/or don't care about who you are.
That sounds fine, but let's compare it to the Professor Layton games.
Let's use Luke, the professor's 'Apprentice no 1!' as an example. Luke's a constant companion and helper to the Professor, and the two of them go on adventures together. But Luke, despite being this hyper little boy, has his 'weak moments', so to speak, too. These times, where Luke shows relatable human emotions, only add to the character. Meanwhile, Ernest would risk his life for Katrielle, head home, and not care about his near-death experience.
Another example. The Professor himself. He tries to stay calm, and he always tells Luke that '...that's what a gentleman does!'. Now, that sounds pretty boring, right? But, one of the Layton games changed every thought I'd ever had on him. He wasn't just being a gentleman for the fun of it, he was doing it for a reason. I'm not gonna spoil it, but I think you get the point.
Meanwhile, Katrielle just sits in that office of hers all day, eating sweets. And when she does get a case to do, she gets off her butt and does it. She could realise that her whole life was a lie, and you know what she'd do? Shrug and resume eating chocolate.
There is one scene in Layton's Mystery Journey that made me a bit sad, but it was easily predictable and felt rushed.

And the puzzles. I haven't even gotten started talking about the puzzles. They're ridiculously easy, and I think that even a 9-year-old could solve most of them with relative ease.

If you're thinking of getting this game, don't. Get literally any other Layton game, except for this game. If a game has 'Professor Layton' in the title, it's superior to this smouldering pile of trash.

By far the most disapointing game of the Layton series...
The new, motional grafics are nice but the conversations are meaningless, the opuzzles not challanging and the female main character is just full of clichés (best example is, that in the minigame is basically just the character changing clothes). Also, instead of the intriguing story, you get a handle of short cases which simply aren't interesting (as an example, in one case you have to find a missing cat, and I'm not putting a spoiler alert over that btw). It lacks the 2 fundamentals of the series, so there shouldn't be much more to say about it. Also, Layton fans are waiting for a sequel of the third game, not whatever this is. Though I don't mind these games as long as they keep looking for an actually good puzzle designer (the previous one, who was very good, passed away).

I have to say, though, that as you progress in the game it gets better and better. Also, its graphics, for a 3DS, are very good, although of course this game isn't focused on graphics. While we all miss Luke and Professor Layton, the 3 new main characters (Layton's daughter, her assistant Ernest, and the dog) are awesome, they are very charismatic and fun to play with. We have to highlight as well that there are 195 puzzles (185 + 10 special ones), that is I think the highest number ever in a Layton game! Coupled with the daily puzzles you can download, there are a lot of misteries to solve!

All in all, a pretty good game, if you like the saga this is a must-have, and if you haven't played any other Layton games yet, this one doesn't disappoint as a start!

I've been a fan of the Layton series ever since I got my 3DS. I think I'm in the minority when I say that I felt the prequel trilogy was more interesting then the classics, likely because I started with them. Regardless of which Layton games we prefer, I think all fans were excited with the announcement of Lady Layton, later titled "Mystery Journey". It was going to pass on the torch to his daughter, Katrielle, and introduced a new mystery with the famed professor going missing.

After finishing the game, my thoughts were mostly positive at first, but after giving it more thought, I started having mixed feelings. I'll start with the positives, I feel like this game has really good writing and the best humor in series. The jokes made me laugh and I really liked the use English terms and slang like "donkey years". I also felt that the cast of characters were likable. Katrielle's a very chipper yet intelligent protagonist, Sherl's a lovable grump, and Ernest, Emiliana, and everyone else were just super fun to be around.

Unfortunately, I feel like the game didn't properly take advantage of it's episodic format. The cases feel too self contained to be connected to one another. There's still a sense of continuity with most cases involving one of the titular millionaires, but even so, none of the cases ever involved or hinted at a "conspiracy" until the end. This would be fine for something like a TV show, but in a story driven video game, it can feel like none of the chapters really matter.

Without spoiling too much, the second to last case's title made me think something crazy was going to happen that could lead to major stakes in the final case. Instead, everything that happens in the second to last case is solved at the very end of it, having no effect on the final case whatsoever. It's SO inconsequential, that I feel like cutting this case out of the game would have effected NOTHING, even more so than any of the other cases in the game which at least have the excuse of introducing the millionaires one by one and giving other characters interesting backgrounds (there's this other one involving the Inspector's wife that's complete filler, but at the very least I give it credit making itself obvious filler and not teasing me in to thinking it was important).

I didn't hate this game, there were things that I really liked as a Layton fan and none of the characters stood out as particularly unlikable. Most of the cases, if treated as individual stories like TV show episodes to a cartoon, can be seen as fun and charming on their own. Also, I did really like the final case since there was a twist that I genuinely didn't see coming. But the reason I didn't see that twist coming was because they never built up to the ending with the cases and instead chose to make feel inconsequential. The least they could've done were slight hints, but they didn't even give that much.

I can't in good faith recommend this to a newcomer, which was the developer's intention for this game, since it would make for a terrible first impression of the Layton series. It's hard to even recommend it on it's own merits since I could see many people being bored with the lack of an overarching plot in an episodic game of all things. I can only really recommend this to Layton fans who are willing to lower their expectations.

Expand

I'll agree that this story isn't nearly as emotionally amazing as Unwound Future (which I hold was the best story out of the whole series if only for that ending that just stabs you right in the heart), but I think I was ready for something lighter. The Professor Layton games have always been great, but the scale just kept getting bigger to the point where it started to feel less special with each one. So I don't think a scaling back to simpler plots is really all that bad.

The cast is fantastic. Sure, no one will ever replace Layton and Luke, but Katrielle and her crew do a pretty great job of endearing you to them pretty quickly. They also did a fantastic job of instilling just the right hints of Layton's personality into Katrielle that make the transition all the easier and help to forge the father-daughter connection all the better.

Unfortunately, this game does end up faltering. The mysteries all wind up being solved via "dues ex machina" discoveries made by Katrielle, things that you could never predict from the other 5 clues that are gathered or any of the conversations or cut scenes previous to that moment, so you end up feeling cheated for even trying to think ahead.

Likewise, the puzzles are a big miss, and they are, of course, the main draw of the game. Nearly all of the puzzles either end up being Gotchas ("Oh, you didn't think about the fact that some people don't like apples!") or they end up being answered either with 0 or the smallest possible number. They were either barely a puzzle or impossible to solve without knowing the exact thought process of the puzzle writer.

In the end, the game still has a little charm, but the lackluster mysteries and puzzles end up growing stale. I'd actually recommend skipping this one unless you're a die-hard Layton fan, then you might get some minor enjoyment out of it.

Layton's Mystery Journey is a mediocre game at best, with uneventful mysteries and anticlimactic plot twists. As a returning veteran, it almost doesn't feel like a Layton game at all.
