I bought this game for my kid and he seems to enjoy it. He spends hours playing and doesn't talk about anything else than dinosaurs. This game must be doing something right. What makes the kid happy, makes me happy. So 7/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was quite disappointed by this game. My expectations may have been too high, but this latest game in the series, while not the worst sequel ever, was pretty disappointing. The scenery and background design is very pretty and well done, the locations look amazing and are fun to explore, and the sound design is pretty good, but that's about all you get. The vivosaur designs look downsized, the total number of vivosaurs has been cut down, and while the location variations were an interesting concept, they were unnecessary and were likely only to extend the vivosaur list a little more. What was fun in the last game was not in this one at all, and the story is lackluster and uninteresting, and the characters are quite boring and you simply don't care about them at all. The difficulty spikes are random and quite frankly ridiculous to deal with. I left the game for two years because I tried to defeat a boss, and it took me 20 tries to actually do it, and when I finally beat it, it was because of sheer luck, not because of my skill or any of my vivosaurs. At this point, I'm unwilling to see the ending of the game as a whole, which is not the best thing for a game at all. What's more is that you are given a vivosaur in the game, that is in fact integrated into the main story, it gets stronger and evolves into stronger forms (contrary to any of the other vivosaurs in the game. sorry folks, no super revival here) and you are expected to use it in battle. But if you rely on it too much (which I'm sure most people did), then you are pretty much screwed. The vivosaur is absent for particular periods of time, leaving you defenseless and with low level vivosaurs. You are punished for relying on a vivosaur you are supposed to be using in the first place. Not the best strategy. This game seems unfinished honestly, like some of the code was lost and they went "look, cool cars and stuff!!!" to make up for it. The ideas implemented go from somewhat clever to a disaster. Challenges and the like are interesting, for example, but they can be very difficult even at a one star rating, and quite a few fossils can only be retrieved by completing the challenge in the area, so exclusivity is clearly implemented.
Overall, good sound design, beautiful background and actual areas to explore, but that's all it's got going for it. The partner system is flawed, the shot system can be easily abused, the battles are boring and either easy to breeze through or impossible to beat, and the story is just... meh. A game you could play once in a while, but not worth paying full price for.

Handsome and harmless, but a lack of depth means these dinos will never rule the earth. [Aug 2015, p.73]

If the combat was more fun and parts of it didn’t feel so cheap, this series could have some legs, but for the third entry in the franchise, it still feels like it has a long way to go.

It’s an alright Pokemon clone but why would you go for a clone if you can just play the original? [Jul 2015, p.072]
