Excave is a game that doesn't take its presentation and narrative terribly seriously, unlike some other RPGs, but this doesn't take much away from the experience. The game's strengths lie in its simple combat which manages to stave off repetition, the array of weapon types, and the diversity of ways players can tackle each dungeon.

Excave is a functional dungeon crawler, which should be fun, if you’re willing to work your way around weak item management, the lack of a map, constant backtracking, and its overall short length. If you can’t deal with these problems, then even the alluring $5 price tag won’t help you forget them.

Excave may have an interesting concept but its overall simplistic implementation and uninspired enemies and locations mean that even the biggest action RPG fans will quickly find themselves bored by this game and seek something more compelling and involving.

While the premise is good, some the visuals are acceptable, and the story and music don’t actively harm the experience, the gameplay is utterly poor to begin with and makes bad choice after bad choice, marring the experience beyond repair.

I had fun for a little while with Excave, but frustration at its many unpleasant aspects was a constant feeling later on.

While Excave does not crap itself with glitches or bugs, the game commits far worse sins by just being so agonisingly boring and dull.
