Mirror of Fate is an extremely competently designed action/puzzle platformer, elevated to must-play status by incredible atmosphere. I played the demo and was put off at first by some loose-feeling movement mechanics, and I read a lot of negative reviews in which the game was compared, with poor results, to prior Castlevania games. However, something drew me in and made me want to buy the game: the atmosphere. The vibe this game puts out is like nothing I've encountered. The music is poignant, the 3D is used to great effect (the way the depths of the castle extend into the 3D background is incredible), and the visuals and story are introspective and measured. Castlevania games prior to the LOS series feel quite campy by comparison (which is fine). The boss design is horrifying in a great, H.R. Giger sort of way.

Aside from the great feel, the nontraditional story structure and progression of mechanics is well constructed. Controls start to feel better and better as you go. All in all, an extremely solid game in terms of the nuts and bolts.

I've never written a review before on Metacritic, but I was so impressed by this game that had to do it. Please check it out!

Enemy variety boils down to "flying" and "ground" enemies with different appearances. Bosses are very easy and unoriginal. The floaty platforming is a pain in the ass sometimes, too. Especially in some places where there's near pixel-perfect jumps to land on ledges. Having a weapon that attacks the ENTIRE screen makes any possible challenge this game could have had dissipate. It basically boils down to hack away at enemies and dodge when they finally decide to attack you. Lastly, the environments are bland and generic except for a few places in the game that were pretty cool looking. But a lot of it looks the same and particular level design patterns are repeated too much.

Nevertheless it is a decent game despite its flaws, and there are much worse games you could get to ease your boredom on the current $20-$30 price it sells for.

The game moves at a brisk pace and never becomes dull. The use of different characters is very good because it keeps the gameplay fresh and gives the player a SoTN feeling of "what is the next power-up/weapon that I will receive next?" Go into this game with low, low, low expectations and you will be pleased--especially if you are an Igavania fan. Even without low expectations, this is a fun "Castlevania" game. Expand

I got to tell you this is a huge step in the right direction for Konami. I mean its been a really long time since there has been a good 2D Castelvania (Harmony of Despair - 2010). This triumphant return to good ol 2D pit jumpen, whip cracken action is just what the doctor ordered.

I'm giving it a 9 because Alucard should ONLY use a sword PERIOD.

Great graphics, great gameplay, good story. However, after finishing the game you are left with the feeling that the game could have been more. The game cries for a sequel with some minor improvements to the gameplay such as more complex leveling, items and a deeper magic system that could make it the greatest castlevania portable game since the GBA and DS ones.

If you looking for something kinda like a older castlevania experience with some new twists this game will not disappoint. My biggest gripe with the game is that it could be a little longer and I feel like it is lacking some of your more classic RPG elements. I'm hoping they make more castlevanias like this in the future as well as one in the standard castlevania format .

The atmosphere in this game is fantastic. The combat is tight and has a hefty weight to it which makes the player feel more connected to the action as you can feel your whip hitting your enemy. The block, dodge, grab, and other variety of moves all add to the gameplay experience. Nothing feels just simply tacked on. Everything is useful for a certain situation. The pacing and longevity of the game also feel more balanced than previous ds castlevania games. The shorter, tighter quest helps prevent the game from becoming a tedious grind. The game simply feels epic from the very beginning. It helps that the story told in mirror of fate is an emotional and heartfelt one. This makes the combat and traversal feel very purposeful and not simply added to kill a bunch of monsters along the way. Theres a large variety of creatures you encounter and awesome boss fights. The quick time events are perfectly implemented and make you feel like a badass. The puzzles are fun and the platforming feels natural and easy to maneuver. The sound effects are also top notch. Mirror of Fate returns to the darker feel of the earlier Castlevanias and its very exciting. This is one of the best mature games for the 3ds. Its refreshing to see the developers create such a mature experience for a nintendo system. Overall, this game is amazing and one of the best castlevania games ever! Hopefully we will see this series continue as you can see the developers are very passionate about making a good castlevania game. Looking forward to Lord of Shadows 2!!! Expand

Everything about the game, from it's ridiculously high production values (stellar graphics, decent voice acting and good quality music) down to its fun cross between action and exploration. The atmosphere in the game is pitch-perfect, running along a rooftop while the moon, clouds and extended view of the castle loom in the background is truly a sight to behold and really sets the game well. However, to find all the secrets a fair amount of back-tracking is required and this can get a little tedious. It's not a hard game, but it is not too easy either (some bosses will take a few attempts). Now, the main aspect of the game really is combat, and thankfully, this does not disappoint, the combination of long and close range attacks combined with the right timing of magic and items really works and is exciting to play. You can only reach a certain level (18) and each level-up gives you a new move to work into your combo, while these are fun, you will inevitably only really use the short range, more powerful attacks. All in all though, this is a fantastic (if slightly flawed) game that most likely will not give much enjoyment to diehard Castlevania fans, but if you're like me and have only played one game in the series before this, Mirror of Fate is ace and is unlike anything else on the 3DS. Awesome, 90/100. Expand
