Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 is everything a sequel should be. It builds on the strengths of the original with its stylish visuals, tight controls and a fluid combat engine that reminds me of how I felt when I was playing some of my favorite 2D platformers in the past. If not for the low degree of challenge and obnoxious Amiibo addition, it could’ve been a perfect game.

If you've not experienced the Azure Striker Gunvolt series yet, this second installment is a terrific place to start. [Issue #24 – November/December 2016, p.20S]

Azure Striker Gunvolt 2's levels play things a little close to the chest, but the sheer breadth of tactics opened up by the inclusion of Copen make it even easier to recommend than its predecessor. It's a jolly old platforming time, and I hope it reaches the level of success it was destined to hit.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 is completely solid. The basics of platformers are left in place, whilst new aspects are brought in to keep it fresh. The story and characters are very well done for this type of game, and the aesthetics, level design and thought put into it shine through in many ways.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 doesn’t radically change the formula of the first game beyond adding a new character. Fortunately, Copen plays slightly differently and does offer up a fresher experience.

While an uninspired story and intrusive dialogue displays hold the game back from reaching its potential, what's here remains incredibly satisfying and worthwhile.

If I had to sum up Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 in as few words as possible, I would call it a safe sequel. [13/2016, p.82]

Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 follows in the footsteps of its predecessor all too well for its own sake, insofar as it's often difficult to point out any outstanding differences between the two. This is not necessarily a handicap, as the sequel is a quality action platformer that features an exquisite visual environment and fine-tuned gameplay.

Those looking for something fresh, an interesting story, or an action game to play in bite-sized pieces on the go may want to think twice.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 is a short, but well crafted experience that plays it safe.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 2's offers a unique method of taking down bad guys, which is enough to differentiate it from the Mega Man Zero series that indirectly spawned it. Tagging and shooting foes is tons of fun and the ability to play as Copen is a nice addition, but Gunvolt 2 still has notable issues with repetitive level design. Still, if you enjoyed the first game, there's no reason you won't have a blast with this one.

If you really dug Azure Striker Gunvolt, you can rest assured that its sequel is essentially the same game. The Copen campaign keeps things fresh and even though the level design squanders his abilities, he’s fun to play as. For those who, like me, were hoping that Gunvolt 2 would sweeten the pot a little bit, prepare for disappointment.

There's more variety, helped by the addition of a new (rather overpowered) playable character in the form of Copen, and it feels more alive with additional characters and the dialog that comes with them, while still managing to retain the same fun gameplay the first game had. One major difference on this front is how much easier it is to get S ranks. Only once did I rank lower then A during my playthrough, while as getting A and S ranks in the first game could be quite an undertaking. That can be either a good or a bad thing, depending on the kind of person you are, so I won't take points off for it.

It's not perfect however. The level design can get a little stale, the story is very lackluster in some parts, and the previously mentioned dialog gets in the way when you're playing and is a huge distraction at times. Also, it comes in a little on the short side if you're not going for high scores and fast times, although it's longer then the first game overall.

Overall though, you'll certainly like this game if you liked the first one.
