Every Sega/M2 3D Classic collaboration to date has demonstrated incredible love and care, even for mediocre games like Altered Beast. That same devotion applied to a top-tier masterpiece makes for an essential addition to any 3DS. This is the 3D Classics game to get.

M2's Gunstar Heroes is not just a new benchmark for 3D Classics titles, but also an unquestionable must-play game for every 3DS owner.

It’s not every day that you encounter such brilliance. You won’t find a better game about running to the right and shooting everything that comes from beyond the screen. [04/2016, p.63]

If you’re into the old school side scrolling shooters like Contra and Metal Slug, this is a game that needs to be played, and the 3DS version is the best one to do that.

Gunstar Heroes is an absolute classic of the 16-bit era. I didn’t think it was possible to make the game better, but somehow M2 pulled it off.

Gunstar Heroes is plain and simple one of the best action game ever made, and this porting is just the icy on the cake with its incredibly 3D effect and extra gameplay features. Must buy.

3D Gunstar Heroes is a conversion that excels in every possible way. Not only it brings the original game in a perfectly playable way and without any traces of aging but it even improves it with its exquisite 3D effect. A real 16-bit classic that can be played again and again.

It’s not worth the double (or quadruple) for those already with the game, but it’s still an incredible adventure any way it’s sliced.

Gunstar Heroes is a genuine genre tour-de-force that's simply not to be missed and is yet another triumph for Sega's 3D Classics range.

A masterpiece brought back to life on 3DS. Considering the really cheap price, if you missed the original this is a great chance.

While it's widely considered one of the best Genesis titles ever, I'd say the appeal is limited to those who have a sense of nostalgia for it. I'm glad I tried it, and with a bargain price it's worth a shot to those who want to educate themselves on this piece of video game history, but I'm guessing it won't hold much appeal to new-school gamers unless they've got a local buddy to play with.

That said, this latest classic revamp on the 3DS eShop is certainly a enjoyable and it's tremendously rewarding to finally overcome its challenges.

Treasure was one of the stars of the Genesis/Megadrive, with classic games like Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy and..... believe it or not..... McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure. Yes, that's right. They took a fast food pimping clown and made an amazing hidden gen platformer. That takes some skill and vision.
Gunstar Heroes is an exhilarating run-n-gun explosionfest with customizable weapons. And explosions. Lots and lots of explosions. Did I mention the explosions? Because you're gonna see a lot of 'em.
It's a shame this series ended after the second installment, with Gunstar Super Heroes for the GBA. But the good news as that it has a place in the M2 converted SEGA 3D Classics lineup.
This is a seminal game, it's a blast to play, and all the tricks Treasure used to simulate 3D on the Genesis makes this version absolutely pop. Unless you hate retro games or SEGA in general, you'll have a blast playing this. Cannot recommend enough.

It also has an extremely easy "temp save" feature, so you don't have to play the stages over and over because they're too hard.

And it's got really good 3D in it.

The sound is great (and there are the two different sound versions to choose from!), the quirky artwork and bosses are still there, and I think it still holds up well today. It's not a 2015 "10," but it's certainly a seminal retro game. Full Review »
