Though Apex's story largely just updates survivor-thriller tropes we've seen many times before, it's effective enough in its repackaging that it's certainly worth firing up on Netflix during a lazy night in. The physicality of Theron's performance, along with the film's vertigo-inducing cinematography, ultimately make Apex an adventure vacation from hell worth taking.

Either the twist needed to come earlier, or the filmmakers needed to do a better job of making sure it provided enough of a jolt to make the previous, largely generic 85 minutes worth the effort. As it stands, Protector's twist ending feels adrift in a movie that's not compelling enough to support it.

This movie wants to get in, get the job done without complication, and get out before it overstays its welcome. On that front, The Rip is solid enough to earn a mild recommendation.

The end result is a film that truly feels like it has something to say and goes about saying it in the strangest way possible.

Brick fails to offer a compelling solution to its central mystery.

Diablo brings the action, but the movie gets tripped up by a villain who doesn't quite fit the story.

Gunslingers can't quite escape feeling like forgettable VOD junk. It does at least try to rise above its standing, and, at times, it comes close to pulling it off.

Old Guy looks the part of a classic, character-based action-thriller, but, ultimately, the script is far too flimsy for the film to coalesce into something interesting. It's too bad, as Waltz could almost certainly crush in one of these, given the right material.

Unfortunately, Dark Match never quite settles on what kind of horror movie it wants to be, and, too often, its overall tone doesn't play to the strengths of its premise.

Dirty Angels is often too serious and too overtly political for its own good.

It all leads to a final fight that should feel epic but ends up being more disappointment.

Dauberman's film is competent enough that I think it will manage to find an audience who's into an overly traditional take on vampire lore, as well as win over King fans who have been onboard with this tale, in all its incarnations, since day one.

The Beast Within, a human tragedy awkwardly disguised in wolf's clothing, stumbles badly.

In Trigger Warning, there's nowhere for Alba to go — no notable battles to fight, nor an interesting war to win. And what we're left with is just another disposable action movie, dropped indiscriminately on a streaming service to sit among all the others.

In the Land of Saints and Sinners is a thoughtful crime drama that features good performances from Liam Neeson and Ciarán Hinds, as well as another standout turn from Kerry Condon.

Desert Road almost immediately establishes itself as a potent thriller, but the real fun to be had is watching it evolve from one type of film to another, as mundane threats give way to more mystical hazards.

This is a movie that deserves to be discovered, to be recommended to friends, and to develop a cult following that lingers on. It's just too much fun to settle for less.
