The comics were lively, witty, and gripping. The setting was horrific, and the writing captured the multifaceted, nuanced responses of all the characters to this, which conveyed the gamut of human emotion. This show is the complete opposite. It has one emotion and it is misery. Every scene is like a pissing contest, with extra points for pouting, acting bored, and putting out scornful contempt. It’s like watching the original comics interpreted in the style of a Twitter argument. It seems as though the director has decided, in a totally condescending way, that complete solemnity and gloom is the only respectful way to convey a post apocalypse setting, but the result feels less like compelling gravitas and more like sullen moodiness - like being lectured to by an angry teenager. The (admittedly great) visuals do not make up for this tedium. This series is a sinkhole of mirth. It makes you glad the apocalypse happened to the characters in it because they are each and every one of them utterly insufferable. The dearth of likeability or charisma in this show brings to mind another failed comic adaptation, Jupiter's Legacy, which was equally patronising. This should make any self-respecting comic fan seriously concerned about the growing trend of the forces of judgmental, posturing mirthlessness colonising our beloved stories and turning them into dreary poutfests. Could have been great. Instead we get more trite slimy Holywood Religion straight from the bowels of BirdApp to your screen as if to your car window. Anyone surprised?

Their only trick to try to make the plot interesting is creating tension by having one of the characters constantly do stupid things that put everyone in danger.

It's been cancelled, so you won't get any meaningful conclusion for the time you've wasted watching it. The special ops woman carries this show and is bizarrely the only one with actual passible and relatable motives, despite being the most far fetched character in the entire show.

The first 10 minutes of the show was promising, then the Hollywood elitist woke back story took over that was not only repugnant, it was outrageously boring. The Last Man is a terrible exercise in leftist lecturing.

Instead what I sat through was a heavy drama with hardly any time at all dedicated to the original main character, and absolutely none of the fun of the original. Gone was any hint of playfulness, or for that matter the happy go lucky amusing idiocy of the comics Yorkick. The new version is a heavy drama focused almost entirely on h fisted political and ideological moralizing focused on all the other survivors. It's the same setup, but with almost no hint of the flow and feel of the original. Expand

I read what others had said and took it with a grain of salt, tried to form my own opinions. They took a comic IP and turned it into a all men are garbage, but wait there is really no such thing as a man because we’re all gender fluid so we’re not on a quest to save the men we’re on a quest to save “humans with just the right amount of genetic bias towards a Y chromosome that they can create life with another human that is compatible with their genetic disposition”. They made the main guy a whiny little weak brat, to what, make all the other women look stronger? He was not like that in the source material. It’s just SJW garbage. I’m sorry, I one hundred percent believe that every person should be treated with love and dignity, for all of those with a genetic abnormality mutated from the life as we mammals know it of two sexes. Regardless of what people want to believe when it comes to the definition of gender roles, that topic can be debated at great length. The percentage of crossed wires and mutations, real physical ones and not a mental “feeling” that you are another sex is very very low amongst the human race. The need to pretend that someone is just as much a man or woman for having transitioned is very painfully blurred in this show, as it would have to be. The entire premise and title focuses on the Y chromosome being the definition of it. I made it up to the point of doctor Mann “Mannsplaining” to Yorick that there isn’t any such thing as a man or woman and it’s an just a spectrum **** before I turned it off for good. Couple stars for good acting performances from all involved, bad review for being a preachy piece of trash. Read the comic, it’s better. Expand

One problem with this premise is that we saw it play out in the Avengers movies. Sure, the Y The Last Man comic came out first, but the Infinity Gauntlet comic that inspired the Avengers movies came out before that. Killing half of all life is a lot to show. Handling those characters takes a lot of work. Comics come with a bit of suspension of disbelief. A TV show, especially a series one, needs to nail the details.

The pacing of the show is trouble from the start. What I want to see are how the survivors keep things going and how Y the Last Man helps them find a cure. (We recently saw a better version of this in HBOs “The Last of Us”). Instead we see a lot of side stories that I could care less about. (Thank you, fast forward). We know people will go nuts and act irrationally, but everything is either on a personal level or a national level. And society goes from 21st century to post apocalypse in about 1 week. It’s like an episode of “The Simpsons”. Also, for no reason, the former president’s daughter plays an important role in government. Losing everyone with a Y chromosome is an interesting premise for how society would change. Many jobs are male or female only. Survivors would surely need training to handle the job loss. An issue with this premise is that all males die at the same time, like with the Thanos snap. Such a crazy and impossible scenario wouldn’t have the same response as a real disaster. Anything interesting that might come from this thought experiment is dulled by crazy and impossible responses by the characters. I’m sure some of this is metaphorical, but a serious TV show needs to get into the weeds with the practical. Maybe go goofier. One highlight of the show is the titular Y. He is good natured, smart, funny, and a total loser. As he puts it, he is just some guy. The show does not commit to the monkey, but it does commit to the dork that could save humanity from this magic, men killing event. This kind of character fumbling through a world of adversaries and saviors would be interesting. What a waste of potential.

First off the comic book is a masterpiece worth reading end to end, and this series attempts an homage to the spirit of the original work.
The overall scenario and premise are pretty shocking but not unimagined or uncalled for by some members of society today. In summary, how would a world without men function? This is a relevant question given the gender-based introspection and analysis that most communities undertake nowadays. The production values are adequate for a post-apocalyptic thriller, with the requisite gore and devastation elements. What is more interesting is the psychological and mental state of the survivors as they navigate a new reality. Y himself, the titular character, is present as a man who did not ask to be last, hence most apparently valuable or precious. It would make sense they would choose a bland uninspiring weak individual to take this role, instead of an uber-ambitious alpha. It's interesting that in a world devoid of men civilization collapses and the rule of the strong takes over almost instantly, with the weak preyed upon like lambs. It's almost as though gender wasn't the root cause. Of course, every opportunity is taken to start cults of personalities, with the rank hypocrisy of evicting to death those who do not agree with the demagogue’s worldview. Perhaps the biggest plot hole would be that the patriarchy offed itself in a giant government conspiracy. You can't make this nonsense up. I can understand why the series was rejected and cancelled. Towards the end, the descent into tribal feral animalistic tendencies of the surviving women was quite disappointing and at times revolting. There was no message of peace and hope.

TheI was really close to give it a 7, but there are some elements that just kind of miss with me. I really liked the portraying of Agent 355, it has similarities to the comic book but is different enough to feel relevant to today's world. The political drama regarding the US president and all the remaining members of the government feels very well executed, although the political gibberish sometimes can be to much. The inclusion of trans men seems something that was missing from the comic, It felt odd own they never mention any (as far I can remember), which I believe is very interesting how a trans man would try survive in a world like this, but the "testosterone before food/shelter" it's kind off putting, I mean survival instincts would focus you on things your body needs to live. But probably the thing that is kind of dull is Yodrick, is a very unlikeable character and the chemistry between him and Agent 355 is very cringy, then when Dr. Mann is introduced it gets even worsts, the acting of Y and Mann is mediocre at best. The interactions between the different survivor groups is very superficial, basically is if there a trans men in the groups, they are good, if not, they are bad, seems like a huge wasted opportunity to really explore this kind of situation without ending with a black or white situation, no shades of gray whatsoever. In conclusion, the show has potential, the setting is great, the political drama has a nice balance of politics and human behaviour, the acting by the most part is good, but the fact the main character's arc is plagued by bad acting and little social commentary keeps this series from really shining (especially given that the source of inspiration lacks any of it and is full of dorky moments).
