The characters in the show could definitely have worked. The show needs better dialogue writers but the situational aspects and the basic characters are pretty good but the casting is all over the place.
The two main characters are supposed to be teenagers but they're played by people in their mid thirties and it's horrible to watch the show constantly remind you how badly cast this pair

The two main characters are supposed to be teenagers but they're played by people in their mid thirties and it's horrible to watch the show constantly remind you how badly cast this pair is, by always reminding you of the age they're supposed to be.
This isn't the only incredibly bad casting choice. The rest of the supposed "teens" are played by wildly varying ages despite the fact we're told they're the same age.
We also have a mid-40's Seann William Scott, who plays a preacher who moved to town with his girlfriend, who is played by an actress younger than the ones playing teenagers.
It's horrendous, basically. There's some niggles with the writing needing to be sharper but overall the casting is just so horrible that it makes the show feel like a hastily put together pilot, that everyone knows will never air so they've just slapped it together with whoever was on hand.
When shows like this get aired it really makes you wonder how much nepotism has had a hand in forming it because genuine professionals who know what they're doing could never have put this out there. This is the product of incompetence and enablement at the highest level. It's too awful to be anything else.

Gave it a shot, but it just came off as a really cheap, white trash version of Reservation Dawgs without any of the charm or indigenous people. I gave it a 4 because I like the idea of a cozy small town comedy, but this really isn't cutting it. We've had far too many of these mockumentary style shows, imo. It's been done better and to death.

Straley, Holmes and Scott bear watching. But Feig and Bicks might want to make some changes before rolling out the welcome mat. In “Welcome to Flatch,” it’s often difficult to focus.

Welcome To Flatch gets out of the gate almost fully-formed, with a world we want to watch and characters that are funny and have the potential for a lot of room to develop.

If “Flatch” were genuinely smart or funny it might be forgiven its offenses. ... Why make these two [Kelly and Shrub] the focus of the show? It’s a bit baffling given the mindlessness of their adventures, but they do fit the agenda, if the agenda is making rural Americans look shiftless, ignorant and incurious.
