Terribly written, appallingly acted, amateurishly plotted police procedural about an aging pretty boy who is immature and toxic enough for the housewives who must surely make the bulk of this show's viewership to squeeze out a drop or two of genital moisture. Avoid.

First episode was fine but they need to bring something more to the main character. VDV is too much in the middle to be of any true interest and the lead detective is who drives the show. Sherlock, Vera, Endeavour, Wallander, Morse, Luther, Tennyson, and many others all have qualities that are definable and unique. VDV has to be pushed in a direction or he's dull, which means the show's dull, too.

Van der Valk is a pure, hard-boiled throwback to the days of Mickey Spillane and Jim Thompson.

Edgier and grislier than the norm for the franchise. [14 - 27 Sep 2020, p.11]

Each of the three parts of “Van der Valk” is a stand-alone story and will make longtime “Masterpiece” and “Mystery!” fans nostalgic. Van der Valk feels about Old Master paintings the way Inspector Morse felt about opera, and Jane Tennison (“Prime Suspect”) felt about alcohol. Sex is ultimately behind everything. Love is elusive. The plotlines are serpentine. Following them is a fine way of spending part of one’s Sunday night.
