Poor acting by most of the cast; very wooden and feels forced. They're also all way too old to be playing teenagers and barely any of them have any chemistry together, so certain scenes are very uncomfortable for everyone involved. Clothing and sets just look ridiculous; it's like they couldn't decide what century they wanted to be in so mashed them all together. I'm not one for fight scenes (more into romance, which this is not) and whatnot, but these ones were just stupid. Don't really know how to describe it, but there is nothing realistic about them.
This show also comes off as being market towards young adults/teenagers, but I would not let anyone under 18 watch this. Not that I would recommend it to any adults, but still.… Expand

It's got layers. Lots of layers... of things mixed together that just should never be mixed together.

Was really looking forward to some nice vampire action scenes, instead we've got these supposed protectors that are all pretty much weaklings, except that one guy. Don't even remember his name. As for action... if you like fight scenes that look choreographed, this is for you. You could literally tell what their next moves would be.
The computer-generated imagery is appalling. That crash and those dogs?! You would of been better of really doing those scenes with stunt people and actual dogs. Can't say it would of made this show better, but it would've been easier on the eyes.
The teens in this look old as balls. Not one of them can pass as a teenager. On top of that, they have very little talent, or chemistry, between the lot of them. Seen more talent and chemistry between actual teenagers at my local theatre.
There is so much more wrong with this show, but all-in-all...
This show is a lot like that one part English trifle and one part shepherd's pie that Rachel made on friends. Only people that aren't too bright like Joey will like it.… Expand

Just another lame show from the US of A. Teen here and I can say that this is marketed for teens with teen stars, but these actors are so not teens. Like, some fight there, but they have no classes and they live there too, but it doesn’t look like a boarding school. I don’t even know. And I’ve done dance since I was a child, and I can tell you that the “fighting” they do is basically just dancing. And they are vampires but a crash can kill them? And what gives with those vampires with red eyes? I mean, they look like zombies. I 100% do not recommend this show to anyone. Anything else is better than this.… Expand

The characters don't even date or anything and just seem to be doing each other. And what even is the plot with this? The plot is very all over the place, rushed and not well explained, if explained at all. The actors are very generic and bland; not the greatest in my opinion. Everything feels and looks forced, some struggle with emotions and they lack chemistry between each other.
The characters seem very two-dimensional and nothing about them makes me like/love, or even dislikes/hate, them like I do characters on other shows. I just don’t feel anything for them, no connection at all. They just don’t seem to have anything going for them. On top of that, the relationships between these characters just seem to happen. No build up to it, no nothing. It’s more lust than love, so no romance in this. The fighting seems wrong in this. I don’t really know how to explain it, but it was obvious what they were going to do next and it was like dancing. In my opinion, fight scenes shouldn’t be predictable and should look realistic.
The music isn’t great and doesn’t fit a lot of scenes, and seems to be thrown in even when it isn’t needed to be. It’s also louder than the speaking, so it is like everyone is whispering and you miss what they are saying. I wasn’t a fan of the sets or costumes. I won’t say any more about them, but if you’ve even just seen the trailer, you’ll know what I mean.
I feel like this show only falls under the supernatural genre because it features vampires, but the only ones that can pass as vampires in this are bad and look more like zombies to me.… Expand

Usually a show has something going for it, but this one had nothing.
Not a lot of talent in this cast. Was embarrassed just watching them try to act. Didn't like those outfits and the set looked weird. Sort of like it was made of cardboard? IUsually a show has something going for it, but this one had nothing.

Not that this academy seems to play much of a role in this show, but still. The casting is so horrible that it makes this show feel like a hastily put together pilot that everyone knows will never see the light of day so they’ve just slapped it together with whoever was on hand at the time. When shows like this get aired it really makes you wonder how much nepotism has played a hand in forming it because professionals who know what they’re doing could never have put this out there. This is the product of incompetence and enablement at this highest level. It’s too awful to be anything else.… Expand

The actors weren’t the greatest and just did not seem comfortable playing those characters. Or maybe that’s because the actors weren’t that great? I don’t know, but I’m not going to be renewing my peacock subscription after they just show re-runs or make unoriginal, generic, boring shows. This show and that company aren’t worth it.… Expand

I had been looking forward to this show since the trailer came out. I love vampires, and werewolves and witches and really anything supernatural and otherworldly… but this was a huge let down. But I struggled too much and got so bored watching it that my mind went elsewhere. I ended up turning it off during the second one. Didn't seem to be any to very much chemistry between the characters, and I feel like the relationships, as well as most other things, have been rushed through. I spent the whole time wondering what was going on and what certain things meant because they just did not explain them.
Everything was kind of blurry too. Don't know if that is an effect they were going for, or if the person who did that was the same person that was left in charge of the special effects. Either way, both were horrible to look at.
I really don't have anything else to say about this show, but there was nothing good in it.… Expand

Was not a fan of the special effects; it needs much more work on it before it can be considered even half decent looking. And I'm not sure if the bad vampires fall under "special effects", but they were horrible looking also.
The acting was a little bland for me. Accents were all different, including from the same actors, and that kept throwing me off. And I don't think the swearing is needed as often as they use it.… Expand

Boy oh boy did this show move fast. You settle in for one thing and then all of a sudden an entirely different thing is happening. I could not keep up with it. It was very dark and hard to look at. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This adaptation starts off incredibly weak and only gets progressively worse as the season continues. Not only are the plotlines from the books jumbled up in a completely nonsensical manner, but many focal points of the first few books have been cut out to make room for all of the political and court drama. None of which even come into play until later books. Perhaps one of the most glaring plotlines to be cut is the fact that in the show, Rose and Lissa never even ran away from the academy, much less for two years. This experience is essential to Rose and Lissa’s relationship and Rose’s character development as a whole. In their time away from the academy, Rose acts as a guardian to her even before meeting and being trained by Dimtri to become an official one. Also during this time, Rose and Lissa become more like sisters than just best friends. Major characters such as Natalie seem to have been completely cut from the plot and her role has been replaced with Sonya and Mia’s, who by the way are sisters now, and Victor’s adoptive daughters. Even though Mia isn’t even a Karp in the books and Natalie is supposed to be Victor's only daughter who he convinces to turn Strigoi, which gives us a deeper look into his devious nature and further solidifies his role as a villain.

And the characters who are present are all glaringly out of character. Show Rose lacks the spunk and wittiness that book Rose was renowned for and the delivery of her lines is very wooden and downright emotionless at times. The show’s version of Rose is a very unwelcome change in comparison to the much more dynamic book Rose. Dimitri (who is no longer Russian fyi) by contrast isn’t serious enough and the scene in which he dances at the club is so out of character that it’s cringeworthy. Lissa has been turned into a cliche “strong independent woman” (blech!) and “carefree rebellious royal” instead of the soft-hearted, reluctant royal who hates conflict and who struggles with her mental health and inner insecurities all of which made her far more relatable than the show’s version of Lissa. It’s also worth mentioning that the show has completely done away with Lissa’s struggles with mental health and self-harm thereby erasing a vital part of her characterization and increasing the stigma that already surrounds the portrayal/discussion of mental health.And TV show Chrisian is far too sensitive and nice and lacks the all edginess, angst and dark humor of the original character. Where is the Chrisitian from the books who set Ralf on fire for tormenting Lissa? Because he sure isn’t in the tv show. Everything that made Vampire Academy unique has been completely stripped away. Any traces of the mythology and culture present in the books have been erased and instead replaced by Julie and Co’s own made up mythos with the “old Moroi” language and made up religion. The costumes and wardrobes are equally atrocious, the chemistry between characters seems mostly forced and WTF is all this “Dominion” crap about?

It really feels like a completely different series and not in a good way. Julie and Co claim to be big fans of Vampire Academy but it’s clear to me that they have absolutely no understanding of the Vampire Academy world or its characters. Book fans looking for a faithful adaptation should skip this show altogether because this is no longer Vampire Academy but a generic fantasy show that can’t seem to determine if it wants to be Game of Thrones, Bridgerton or the Handmaid’s Tale with some vampire stuff thrown in. The only thing about this “adaptation” that’s remotely like Vampire Academy is the title and character names.… Expand

It was like everyone was whispering and I still can't work out why. Was it in the script? The dialogue was not much better. The acting was all over the place. Some were good, most were bad. Accents came and went. Emotions weren't really there, and when they were it felt forced. A lot of lines, especially the swearing, and make out/sex scenes were very cringe worthy and just feel like they didn't need to be there. I really feel like whoever was in charge of the cast didn’t even try to find people that are/look like teenagers. I mean, are there no teen actors in Hollywood available anymore? Don’t know where they filmed, but everything just looked cheap and thrown together. And the script was bad. Lines in this were said by people that you know wouldn’t say them in real life because no one speaks like that, especially when they are meant to be hundreds of years old. The swearing all the time was not needed. Also, what was up with the divergent stuff happening in this? The whole “factions” set up test thing and stuff. Is there not anything new to write about these days? Why did they have to take others peoples work and shove it all into this? Don't even get me started on that music. It Bad with a capital B. Sometimes you got it goin for no damn good reason.

If they’d spent more time on getting proper actors, script writers, directors, CGI specialists etc. this show might have actually been good, but as it is it is just unbearable to watch and confusing.… Expand

I watch show with granddaughters and I am disgusted with it. Young people should not be exposed to such things as this friends with benefits and grooming. Young people should not be exposed to such things as this friends with benefits and grooming. I cannot understand how this get past companies? Why they allow this to happen? And why this show in hurry to do everything? You need slow down. Nothing explained properly and happening too fast. It safe to say this show banned in our home as it not appropriate for underage people, it target audience, to watch. Parents watch your children and grandchildren. And believe me I've seen some doozies. I read the books multiple times in high school and then again a little over a year ago, so I can confidently say that this show has next to nothing in common with the books. Not only are none of the characters recognizable (in looks or personality) but none of the major plotlines from the first few books were kept in the show. I won't go into too much details but even though I am by no means a "movie fan" I can honestly say the 2014 movie did a far better job sticking to the source material than the tv show did. At least it was recognizable as an adaptation of Vampire Academy unlike this steaming pile of garbage. And honestly even if this show weren't based on one of my favorite book series, I'd still give it 0 stars due to the lack of acting ability and believability. The acting in this "adaptation was the most wooden and emotionless acting I've ever seen and the character relationships and chemistry were non-existent. For everything else they’ve gone cheap on the actors, the script, the plot, the special effects, the clothes, even the fight scenes look unrealistic and over practiced to the point that it looks like a dance. Yes, I could have looked passed some of those things, and I did, but actors and script are two huge things that I can’t and won’t look passed, and when you have actors that can’t act and a plot and a script that looks and sounds like it was written by high schoolers that only watch reality TV and overdramatized soap shows, you not only have some huge problems that should have never been made in the first place, but a recipe for cancelation. Why can't writers just stick to the source material instead of making s**t up as they go like they did with this poor excuse of an "adaptation." I mean, I don't even know where to begin with all the problems that this show has. But it is unbelievably bad! Little to none of the plot from the first few books made it into the show at all. And none of the characters are actually recognizable as their book counterparts (in terms of both looks AND personality. The costumes and wardrobe options are abominations and some of the worst things I've seen. And on top of that, the acting is atrocious and some of the most bland, wooden and emotionless acting I've ever seen. Started watching this with my daughter thinking it would be a nice experience and a chance to bond some more since we both love the books (I read them when I was younger and introduced her to them when she was old enough to read them), butStarted watching this with my daughter thinking it would be a nice experience and a chance to bond some more since we both love the books (I read them when I was younger and introduced her to them when she was old enough to read them), but this show is nothing like the books, the plot from the books is gone, the characters personalities are not the same, and we couldn’t even tell you who was meant to be playing who from the books because no one looks as they should. Still, we gave it a go… and after skipping the not for children scenes we decided that we’d had enough and turned it off since we didn’t want to ruin the books and what we had imagined when we’d read them. Really disappointed since the creators and actors told everyone that this was an adaptation, but it’s clearly not. Will always be grateful for the movie that we got in 2014 that followed the story pretty spot on and was filled with amazingly talented young actors.… Expand

They’ve taken bits and pieces and put them together out of order and completely removed majority of the books, only to replace all those missing pieces with bits and pieces from OTHER people’s work (think handmaids tale, divergent etc.)

I don’t expect actors to look 100% like the characters are described in the books, but these people couldn’t have been further from the descriptions of the characters so many of us have loved for well over a decade now. How some of them can call themselves fans of the books and take on one of the roles I’ll never know. All of my love for the books aside, and this show was just meh-bad. I agree with others about the plot, acting and script being done wrong. The plot was rushed and has too much happening, the acting was just sad and embarrassing, and the script really does sound like it was written by whatever children they have working over at the cw offices. The action, special effects and music were all wrong too. The action just looked like some kind of ridiculous dancing, the special effects were anything but, and the music was loud too and used when not needed – to not fitting into the scenes at all.… Expand

I'm a huge fan of the books, and I'm really pleased with this show! It's not the exact same as the books, but the show captures the essence of the characters and their relationships, while updating the plot to make it more diverse and focusI'm a huge fan of the books, and I'm really pleased with this show! It's not the exact same as the books, but the show captures the essence of the characters and their relationships, while updating the plot to make it more diverse and focus on the endgame of the books (the political intrigue and cultural revolution) instead of the high school drama that the first few books focus on. The actors have great chemistry and really bring the characters to life, I love the costuming and aesthetics, and the new ways that this show is expanding the world building of the books. While some of the CGI is not great, that adds to the charm for me, it reminds me of the early 2000s vampire shows that I loved. I was really excited for this show and was not disappointed, excited to see what the rest of the season holds and hope that they get a chance for a second season/to complete the story of the books (maybe the spin off series as well!)… Expand

They have nailed the adaptation from the book. It does deviate however it’s worth it and works better for the show adaptation. It’s the characters I love from the books with a slight twist. Go. Watch. Now!
