Imagine Family Guy done seriously and Stewie Griffin is played by a woman. The jump cuts are handled as three dimensional breaks in reality or mental illness. Leaving the viewership to decide and interpret.

The art style is beautiful and the story is one of the most original concepts I've seen in television in the past few years. A true must watch.

Beware the 8/9/10 shillbots, it's just not that great unless you're a femme in college studying personality disorders. (originally posted IMDB 10/2/19)

Her comments in the hospital room made me turn off the tv. There are a lot of cliches. How this has a rating anywhere near the amazing "Fleabag" is absurd. FB has everything "Undone" doesn't--genuine humor, authenticity and originality. But I want to be clear--it's the writing that hurts this show. Bob Odenkirk is a great actor, and Rosa Salazar if terrific... it's her words that let her down. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really disliked this. The uncanny, lazy animation is the least offensive part, the landscapes can even look pleasant. The sci-fi aspects of the show are hollow, simply acting as a vehicle to provide background information, under the pretense that the father is trying to “figure it out” but with less logic than Back to the Future. Nothing gets figured out. Nothing has any resolution. Alma is a completely unlikable character, which would be fine if there was some arc to her overcoming or even just acknowledging any of the truly awful things she does throughout the series. The horrible thing she does at the wedding is just immediately rewound and undone via her superpower with absolutely no acknowledgement of what she just did. I care nothing about this character. The father does not seem to care about the sister at all, myopically focused on his task, and conveniently forgetting the most important aspect of his own past. The mother is only drawn as an antagonistic force, forcing the main character to take her medication. A Bustle article on the writer illuminates that this is actually an autobiographical piece, dramatizing the writer’s struggle with an unspecified mental breakdown, and learning her grandmother had schizophrenia, even so far as seeing enlarged ventricles on her CT scan. The writer pushes ideas of “considering different perspectives” as something Western Medicine is unable to consider, and that the show is an illumination of that. The writer attributes overcoming her own mental health issues to a Shaman.

I find it all offensively bad. It has no regard for its audience, just a purely autobiographical piece that only means something if you can identify with the worst main character in existence. Maybe some see her as “edgy” but to any mature adult (i’m only 30) it’s a grating experience watching her interact with her family, the constant disregard she shows for the people around her is completely unprocessed. What was the point of any of that? They took the alluring concept of mental health and did absolutely nothing with it, even going so far as to obscure what it means to have delusional or psychotic thinking. Horrendous.

This happens sometimes. You can watch the first few episodes of a series and not particularly like what you experienced - but, if you watch the entire series you gain a complete appreciation of it.

I think this is why professional reviews often seem so incompetent. The professional reviewer gets the first episode or perhaps the first 3 episodes in advance and then writes a review without understanding what they are writing about.

This is my original review written in 2019 after season 1:

I watched "Undone" because Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad lawyer) had a major role in the series and I really like his acting. But, almost all of the acting was very good - and Odenkirk was just one good actor among many in the series. In fact, Rosa Salazar who starred in this series makes this something I would recommend everyone should consider watching.

I think people will enjoy this series more if their expectations are framed by knowing in advance that the overall plot of the series is not the real driver for why this is such a good series.

So, for example, when the main character Alma goes into a rant about the Alamo - it's better to understand that it is not something that is somehow a driver of an overall plot. It's just a development of better understanding of a character in a very enjoyable and introspective way.

So I know most people get upset if a story does not have a strong plot driven element. Just note that there are a lot of people who enjoyed this series. So, my recommendation is try to appreciate the character development and acting in this series because it is really quite good.
