This one is thick with atmosphere. Kudos to the cinematographer, because they really create a claustrophobic pall over the entire series. Andrew Garfield is also knocking it out of the park. I find the religious undertones (laughable because they are in your face) to be respectful yet creepy. I can only imagine how this pans out, but I'm hooked.

Engrossing true crime with shocking elements that had me from the moment I began viewing! Riveting and stunning that it is based on a book that was written on true events, but definitely worth the watch if you are a true crime enthusiast who enjoys religious zealotry stories based on unimaginable events!

The paradoxical "exotic" nature of the show -80's Mormon Meurica- is what makes this show intriguing of course, but the writing also cleverly unfurls the different plot lines so as to keep us on our toes, without resorting to clichéd plot devices and tropes.
On the other hand the camera work -the NYPD Blue jerky cam- is very irritating and almost ruins the show for me. The constant use of

Garfield plays it safe, using his trademark fragile and delicate nature, but it fits the character quite well.
    A good entertainment.

A slow burn police investigation series that delves into faith, family & morality.
While this a compelling series, it is a tad bloated and towards it's conclusion becomes overly philosophical in regards to religion.

Garfield is the beating heart of the show, but the entire ensemble breaks out of expected roles to place Under The Banner Of Heaven among the best miniseries of the year.

Under the Banner of Heaven is sometimes so intent on conveying a grand message that it forgets to tell its main story. Yet, while the show hinges on a classic whodunnit, its deeper scrutiny of faith and doubt gives Garfield the space to show off his skills. ... But Garfield isn’t the only star here. There’s hardly a weak link in the sprawling cast.

Black let the story sprawl too much. Ultimately, this has the sheen of prestige TV without ever quite delivering.
