It took me awhile to recognise and remember all the aged original characters as i saw them appear but it was like seeing old friends again.I find David Lynch's world to be very soothing and hypnotic and loved this new entry.
There was enough beautiful fresh new mystery to keep me wanting more in weeks to come .
    Welcome back David .
Nice to see you haven't succumbed to the mainstream.

What that series gave me was not like anything I had seen on TV until then and even though it had been almost twenty years since ithad finished, Twin Peaks felt in a certain way recent because it was an immersive world despite all the mysterious and enigmatic things that surrounded it.

The Return was a highly anticipated event, if it was for me with only seven years of waiting, I don't want to imagine how it was for those who really waited since 1991. How was the experience? Was it really worth it? For me it was amazing, I enjoyed every episode, the unconventional of its narrative, the bizarre, the funny parts, the spectacular, the incredible, the musical, the surreal, the visual, the strange, the small answers it provided and all the new questions that provoked.

Twin Peaks and David Lynch gave us a journey, an experience that felt separated from the first two seasons, however it was never out of place, it's the same universe but even if it does not seem like that, Twin Peaks also evolved. It needed to evolve.
David Lynch gave us in the eighth episode, something that had certainly never been seen on television, a spectacular, spooky and transcendental episode that despite how difficult it could be for an average viewer, I cannot believe that they could be unable to admire its beauty and its rarity.

The ending was devastating, a question, a voice in the air and a heartrending scream in the night, the lights went out and that was it.
It took me more than a week to accept that ending, to cope with all of its ramifications, after all it was fair to feel deprived of a conclusion but frankly I understood what Lynch's cinema has always taught me, conclusions are not always a true answer, the experience and what you have left after finishing it is the real prize and if there is something in which David Lynch is quite good is in challenging you as a spectator.

There are thousands of theories and everyone will have theirs and without a doubt all of them are valid, but sometimes I wonder if we really want to know the complete truth of this story and being honest I think that would sustract the magic from the matter and if there's something that has cemented the status of Twin Peaks is precisely that and if you are looking for the opposite then Twin Peaks will never be for you.

come back. Twin Peaks Season 3 is not engrossing TV. The characters are
not easy to relate to and the plot cannot be followed in any meaningful way.

The magic of season 1 (and to a lesser extent season 2) is definitely
not here. I think Lynch and Frost would have benefited from network

Based on the first four episodes. Lynch is back in form, but not necessarily back in Twin Peaks. The town has changed. Fans of his more casual work might be put off by the injection of heavy doses of relentless experimentalism (think Eraserhead, Fire Walk with Me, Inland Empire). But I believe Lynch's unapologetic style serves a useful purpose in turning televised drama into the art form that it aspires to be - and what better place to do it than prime time streaming television!

The return of old characters gives the hard, dark drama its soft, nostalgic touch. Even the new characters, with a couple of exceptions, are good additions. Some of the dialogue is a bit weird, but that's Lynch for you! The humour gets progressively more absurd and fun. It is too early to tell where the story will go, but I'm genuinely impressed by what Lynch has managed to do here - upturn all expectations while simultaneously scratching enough of that nostalgic itch to keep (most) fans happy. Some will be disappointed, many others will be perplexed, but this is some cool stuff!

Twin Peaks fans are going to eat this up and call it caviar. As long as Showtime lets David Lynch do his thing, which I'm sure was part of the deal, this new season will be weirdly excellent.

I don't think I can explain what makes Lynch so great or hypnotic but I think part of the reason the show is so great is because it isn't content with just continuing the show with the old characters and locations, (though it does do this fantastically as well) it instead wants to expand to something, new, original and better.

One is a creative narrative storyteller who draws intense performances from his actors and alternates relieves and heightens the mystery and tension in his work by speckling it with short bursts of deadpan absurdity and dreamworld horror. That's the good Lynch we see in Blue Velvet and TP season 1. The bad Lynch is a self indulgent pretentious spoiler of his narrative work to let you know he's dedicated to "art" rather than a finished work of integrity and ideas. The perfect example of this disunity is Mulholland Drive which nosedives from great heights midway through to disappear up its own posterior with a nasty message that (hollywood? life?) is nothing but shallow people using and trashing each other just as I, David Lynch, just used and trashed you, my audience, by despoiling the great story and characters i built in the first half of the film by saying it was all a dream or some other nonsense. Mulholland Drive and to a much greater extent in Lost Highway, which is weighted more to the bad side of Lynch's creativity, also display a disturbing aspect of Lynch which is his often over the top brutality towards his female characters which contrasts strongly with his ability to tenderly draw strong sympathetic and realistic female characters. This is a weird tendency but not in a good way like the moose head on table in a bank kind of weird. A perfect example of this is the short lived character Daria in TP season 3 who gets punched in the face twice (once wasn't enough to show bad Cooper is bad?) and then gets shot through a pillow. THEN Cooper lifts the pillow so we can enjoy seeing Daria is shot in the head (was there any doubt from inches away?). The latter is just one example of how the show follows the bad tendency of the TP movie to shift too far into darkness without a sympathetic hook for the viewer to take that dark trip in any enjoyable way. Comic relief is also absent. Lovable goofy characters like Andy and Lucy seem to be jarringly brain damaged, maybe inhabited by spirits from a Dumb Lodge we'll find out about later? The pacing and delivery of the few "funny" scenes with both the old and new characters like the forgetful neighbor of the murdered woman is way off and the jokes go over like lead balloons. Even the pacing of interesting scenes like the photo box in NYC is way too slow and milks the tension from it. But it's hard to complain about episodes 1 and 2's flaws when we get to the unremitting boring nonsense that is episodes 3 and 4. While Albert has a few funny quips in these, they are almost hard to latch onto amidst the numbing tone of these episodes which are not leavened by music or some other aid this weak material sorely needs. I think any fan of TP's first season was excited by the news months ago that the original 9 hour run of this season was being lengthened to 18 hours, but based on these four episodes, we could be in for an exhausting 9 hours of ponderous noodling with bad special effects to balance out 9 hours of narrative storytelling. I'll keep watching to see if good Lynch winds but i'm not hopeful based on what we have seen so far.
Having just watched the 5th episode, the prospects of recovery for this show seem even dimmer. Cooper continues to impersonate Dougie and his family, friends, and now co-workers are all taken in by the impersonation even though his speech is restricted to one or two word repetition of whatever is spoken to him. In the real world or an artistic one of integrity, all of these people would have driven Dougie to a hospital to investigate his serious cognitive dysfunction. This is not absurdist, it's just bad lazy writing that maybe could be excused if it was a one scene transition for Cooper, but can't be for 3 ungodly boring episodes of such drivel. What makes it worse is that one can easily see how very funny it would be to see Cooper having to impersonate a slacker like Dougie to find his way back into the world, but, you know, that would require Frost/Lynch to actually write some interesting dialogue and it's apparently 25 years too late for that. The lack of any creative effort in some scenes is often stupefying, e.g. Sheriff Truman's brother talks to his wife about a water leak in as mundane terms as you could hear riding a bus and then the scene ends. Later, a boy sees an object under a car that causes it to blow up. The jump cut from the object to the car in flames seems borrowed from a no budget straight to video film and the boy is mere feet away unharmed by flying glass, etc. If there were still newspapers around with wide audiences who paid critics to write literate reviews, this show would be rightfully vilified as junk patched together by 2 guys coasting off their prior reputations to cash in.

Ladies and gentleman, "Twin Peaks: The Return" is great television. It's cinematic and emotional. Every beat is poetic, elliptical, and deeply cryptic. It disturbs the molecules. It makes us see. Yes, it's slow-paced... but it's Michelangelo Antonioni slow. Just watch and let it breathe. It's quintessential David Lynch. I loved every second of it. But enjoy it, because after Lynch is done with this you'll never see it again. It's as rare as a white peacock. Thank you Showtime for having the guts to greenlight this seminal return. Ok, now on to 3 and 4. This is so much fun. Spectacular. Thrilling. Expand

I have heard said that Twin Peaks happens when you're not watching it. This is in reference to the fact that you watch the show, but also think about it the whole week. It stays with you and when you have been immersed in the world of Twin Peaks for years you eventually begin to live it. Twin Peaks is not only one of the best television shows ever made, but for some it a way of life and state of mind.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the original Twin Peaks from the first 5 minutes of the pilot to a title bit into Season 2, when it went from being perfect to just better-than-average TV with characters I loved. It did NOT take 5 episodes before it started to get good.

Season 3 is unfathomably bad. Sure, I don't know what Lynch's master plan is, but I CAN see horribly written dialog, failed attempts to recapture the spirits of old characters, scenes that are 2 to 5 times too long (and not in the good way David Lynch used to do). I started each of the first 4 episodes with my fingers crossed that it would be where some of the old magic returns. But after about 4 hours, the only bit of the old magic I saw were parts of the glass box thread and a new motorcycling character (not James).

Maybe a miracle will occur in the remaining episodes but I feel more and more like a sucker for watching the first 4...

The atmosphere is still as good as it was 25/26 years ago. It's quite mysterious, funny and fascinating. For me it's more of the level of season 1 and better than 80% of season 2. Really loved episode 3 in particularly. Lynch and Frost are really doing a great job so far. I have seen the first 4 episodes and it's better then I expected.

Got to congratulate Lynch on showing us all how stupid the average consumer is going by all these positive ratings. Most of these morons voted when the first episode aired. This review was written at the end so its covering the entire season proper.

With Twin Peaks 2017, gone are the crazy relationships, the hot girls and the ground. Completely. So much of the time I was wondering what in the hell was going on and why am I watching this? It is less a Twin Peaks show and more a surrealist art piece which happens to have Twin Peaks characters in it. It took me 3 days to watch the premiere. I mean, come on. It's too much. Which makes sense considering the epic notions of black lodges would seem silly if perpetually trapped in a small town up North.

I think the most important change from the old series was abandoning the soap opera from hell thing. If your memory serves TWIN PEAKS was a soap opera of sorts. Couples everywhere. It was so soapy it even featured a soap within itself called AN INVITATION TO LOVE. To tribute through paroday the PEYTON PLACE grass roots which would soon bloom into TWILIGHT ZONE and SILENCE OF THE LAMBS).

This time 'round it's no invitation to lovel. It's more THE BLUE ROSE MYSTERIES, an idea inspired by Chris Issak's turn in the Peaks film. So instead of the melodramatic world of romance turning -- we have the repercussions of what 'the bad guy' has done for the last 25 years.

In this way TWIN PEAKS changes its core tone. Which may not be a bad idea. Or may be a terrible one.

    Like I said: it's tricky.

No. Lynch and Frost create something new on those bases, knowing well that both the world, the cinema, television in just 25 years have changed a lot and that the small Americans small town is no longer what is a few years ago because now it’s connected to all the rest of the world for better or worse.
Very important are the secondary story that accept the director to address the dramatic issues that he faced throughout his filmography: from problems within any family, from drugs to rape.
But like every work of Lynch it is difficult, very much.
It's not the television of today and the viewer must be very careful because all 18 episodes are connected, and therefore there can not be a minute of distraction.

I can see ways they might have shortened that 18 hours into 9, but I can easily think of ways they could have stretched it into 30. This show is a distillation of the experience of time dilation. It seems very content to frustrate its audience, but then turns around and gives you a major dollop of fan service. You might think something's never going to happen, then it suddenly happens all at once out of nowhere, with no big soundtrack music-cue to clue you into the significance. Likewise there are things you expect to happen, or be resolved, the are not! In fact they are dropped completely, It doesn't mean they were meaningless, it just means there's more to the story than that thread. You can't get hung up on stuff here, if you are in the weeds studying the details you could be lost out there forever. We have to find a way to rationalize the tiny little details we're shown with the largest strokes of the story at its most elemental. There's kind of a zen to it. I'll be honest I didn't love the show at first, when it came out in 2017 I stopped watching after the 8th episode. It seemed to me the show had disappeared very far up its ass and it was too abstract for me (and I'm cool with abstract!). But I always planned to finish it eventually. Well, I finally finished it in 2022 and I'm happy I did. When it comes to giving the show a ranking out of 10, it's basically unrankable. This show is critic proof. It feels like if you give it anything less than a 10 you have fallen into Lynch's trap. Like.....to give this show less than a 10 you'd have to understand it better lol. Because unless you can say that you fully understand it, you can't decide that this wasn't the best possible version of itself it could be. Maybe it is! After not enjoying Twin Peaks for two seasons, season 3 was like a blessing from heaven. Weird shots and situations, insane comedy and the abandonment of soap opera pastiche in favor of modern TV pastiche made everything so much more interesting. And Copper is brilliant as always.

It feels a bit trite giving David Lynch and Mark Frost a score for a cult universe they've been devoted to for decades, long before social media cringe took over, but I'd like people to watch this new series. No other cinematographic language has been seen in any other series or film. In no medium has it been seen an artistic capacity to represent the complexity of dreams and a surreal reality. Undoubtedly the best series in history.

I can absolutely understand why people hate this "reboot" of Twin Peaks. It's completely different from the original and that's why I love it. I do love the original, but this is on a whole other level. Part 8 is a perfect episode, but again, I understand the hate this got. I just pray we get another season some day.

As a huge fan of the Twin Peaks of the early 1990's, this was a letdown.
What made Twin Peaks for me was the combination of it's dark subject matter with it's quirky and loveable characters. This series lacks the latter and with it some of the magic.

Twin Peaks ended in episode 9 season 2. Everything that came afterwards is a waste of time. The film was alright, although there was no real need for it as they were only telling us again what we had already deduced in the show.
Season 3 was awful. The people saying it was great clearly have no taste at all and/or are nothing but David Lynch fans who think anything he puts out is

I wasn't looking for a trip down memory lane with season 3, expecting to see the exact same show only 25 years later. All I wanted was the same level of quality, mystery, subtlety, charm and brilliance from the original show, but sadly it wasn't there at all. It is now clear to me that season 2 killed Twin Peaks and season 3 buried it.
I truly feel sorry for the original and new cast that had to put up with this mess...

You got two hours that were often gorgeous, sometimes goofy, frequently disturbing and far more graphically violent than the original--filled with performances that ranged from amusing to disquieting to the flat-out amateurish.

These episodes scattered a lot of fascinating imagery, disconnected story ideas, and inter-dimensional nightmare antics in front of its audience; it’s up to viewers to try and put the pieces together, or (my preferred method) simply soak in every bizarre tableau with glee. ... Twin Peaks (subtitled The Return) is a worthy new entry in his canon.

Twin Peaks: The Return was creepy, surreal, bizarre, and often unintelligible. Just like its predecessor.
