    Transparent continues to explore the transgression of borders, but Season 4 feels a bit pedantic. Too often this season the writing wants to tell us what we should know rather than allowing story lines to develop to show us the significance of crossing borders. The acting remains strong, but with weaker dialogue, it's harder for the actors to shine as they might with better writing.

    Transparent is as beautiful television as ever. ... The characters’ shaggy-dog awkwardness, it must be said, is sometimes shared by the show itself to its detriment. ... But even such missteps are admirable signs of the show insisting on the full humanity of marginalized people, regardless of which side of any given border they’re on.
