Nov 25, 2016I started watching because of its exceptional reviews and comparisons to the Killing. This show is nothing like the Killing. None of the characters is likable, and the "plot" includes too many nonsensical elements to even begin to catalogue here. The show is so caught up with trying to be "artsy" and "edgy" to impress critics that it fails miserably in its execution.

Mar 26, 2013Dark, twisted, weird and mysterious, you won't see any similar show on TV right now. Not only its plot is well-weaved and tense, the characters are played out beautifully. It has a great potential for awards!

Mar 22, 2013Perhaps above all in a time where even good TV drama is broad and familiar and cliche Top of the Lake is specific. It's moody. It's subtle and ethereal and existential. It's intense and unnerving without the writers trying to figure out how many F bombs they can fit into a sentence.

Apr 18, 2013Flawless. Masterful writing, a really smartly interlocking mystery with a satisfying conclusion, pitch perfect acting, tons of atmosphere and the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen in a television show. I didn't want it to end.

Mar 31, 2013Simply amazing show! Fantastic acting, cinematography, story, characters and especially atmosphere.
While watching the first 3 episodes I had flashbacks of Twin Peaks and the foreign version of The Killing.
Great directing to, the area where this is taking place is interesting, as are the characters.
Best new show since Homeland imo! Check it out, top notch tv! -

May 18, 2013Watched this straight through after I discovered a post-it reminding me that this was coming on in March. Loved it.
I'm looking at you, "The Killing" people when I say, This is how an atmospheric, locale-centric mystery is done. This down under gothic gets a 10. -
Aug 24, 2013Top of the Lake is one of the most intriguing shows I've seen in long time, the quirkiness of the characters (especially Elisabeth Moss) enhanced the intertwined and un-nerving story-line. The characters were mysterious yet believable and scenery stunning. Another Campion New Zealand masterpiece.

Oct 19, 2013A perfectly done series, portrays a rural area with "warts and all" approach, and leaves you guessing until the final scenes. The visuals are fantastic, a perfect backdrop for such a dark tale.

May 10, 2014wow.. I don't know where to begin. The plot and characters were so contrived and manipulative in that tired, dated, man-hating mode, I'm shocked that it received positive reviews at all. Kindof a scary commentary on
the level of blind hostility, and absurd characature people are willing to swallow. Jane Campion should be
ashamed of proliferating such sub-standard and revolting propaganda. -

-
Mar 26, 2013Interesting albeit extremely quirky and fairly involving so far. It could really use subtitles as the accents are sometimes completely incomprehensible.

Jun 21, 2016What a fantastic series this was. You rarely come across shows like this nowadays. The intriguing plot, brilliant slow-pacing and beautiful acting from a talented cast make this an extremely compelling and satisfying venture. I am so excited to hear that season 2 is coming! Can't wait!

Sep 8, 2017Dark investigations in very specific mood, wonderful music, beautiful design and very Scandinavian style of the series, although from the other end of the world. There is no other series such this one.
-
Apr 10, 2018Excellent detective series. Very much reminds 1 season of the Present detective story only with rural New Zealand spirit. Action of a plot is dragged a little out and end of history too simple and without any explanations. Cast too simple, except Elisabeth Moss I know nobody. The finest in series - rural spirit and beautiful views of the mirror lake.
-
Apr 15, 2017Top of the lake is a rich, layered mystery drama that uses an inventive approach to a tried and tested format. It is just as intricate and beautiful as its remote New Zealand backdrop.
-
Sep 6, 2017A solid examination of gender politics through the lens of a story. The mystery and mystical elements of the show make for a clever change of pace from most detective stories and Moss excels in this role.

Jan 23, 2021A disturbing, mysterious crime thriller that is well written, directed and acted.
Awards & Rankings
-
Numerous story strands--Robin’s dark past, the venomous Mitcham and his ne’er-do-well sons, a New Age women’s camp run by the mysterious guru GJ (Holly Hunter)--all coalesce into a taut and provocative thriller about damage, vengeance, and escape.
-
The miniseries is full of striking characters, some brutish and scary, others vulnerable with painful secrets.
-
A triumph of writing, directing, and acting.
