Top Boy remains a very good show and one of modern British TV's finest offerings. It is an absolute gem of a show and one that is gripping and intense in equal measures.

Top Boy remains a very good show and one of modern British TV's finest offerings. It is an absolute gem of a show and one that is gripping and intense in equal measures.

The only thing that really prevents me from giving it a higher score is that certain scenes from here look like they are pulled straight out of the wire but less artistically written. Top Boy has always had hints of this comparison but Dushane and Sully's relationship feels exactly like Stringer and Avon's. I don't think you can get quite as many props being second to this plot, especially when the wire did it first.

This lack of 100% fresh ideas is one of Top Boy's biggest weaknesses. Thankfully, all of the other parts are more than enough to paper these cracks. There is also some innovation and I particularly like both the Summerhouse demolition and Lauryn storylines and they felt like very inspired ideas.

Overall, I would still heavily recommend Top Boy especially to a British audience, it'a definitely in the upper echelons of current TV.

It is violent, with some intense scenes that can stick with you, even episodes after watching. Still, Top Boy is a distinct example of when great writing meets great acting; overlook it at your own peril.

Like these forceful, resourceful anti-heroes, the show always comes out on top. And it’s not about to move from that spot any time soon.

It’s a storming series, which manages to take on serious issues – mental health, domestic abuse, homophobia, child neglect – without ever becoming po-faced or worthy. The script is full of heart and humour. If you binge-watch the eight episodes (as many fans will surely do), you’ll feel spat out, exhausted, thrilled.
