this show was outstanding, picking up the main characters from 6 years ago, and showing how much things change and still stay the same. there was a bit in like the 8 & 9th episode I felt it was stretching a little, but all n all a really enjoyable watch

I really like Top Boy as I feel it is one of the better British shows exploring urban life. I often find myself lamenting the relative lack of British shows that really reflect modern cities and lifestyles. Exports like Downton Abbey, Bridgerton, or even Peaky Blinders are fantastic yes, but sorely removed from the modern landscape of British cities.

Top Boy excels in painting a relatively realistic (of course the violence is scaled up a notch for drama) reflection of Britain. It often gets compared to The Wire and, whilst I don't think it is quite as good as that, it does have shades of that influence. Mostly I just like that it's something that I can relate to more as a British young adult. Stories like this are severely lacking on British television so I will always support it.

Top Boy back and better than dare I say ever? Show doesn’t miss a beat from the end of the second season to the begging of the third besides the time which has passed.

didn't watch the first two seasons which definitely skews my review, cinematography was above average, music and sound design were average, but the writing and especially the acting was fantastic, those two aspects alone quantify a 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The new series of Top Boy, is well produced, slick and overall, a solid crime drama, and a result, worth watching.

However, it lacks the same sense of poignancy and grit that was ever so present in the original series, and feels too slick. The series is also let down by some poor acting performance, namely from the new cast members Jamie, comes across as wooden, and his older brother (who's name I have forgotten) is about as emotionless as a Dutch prostitute after a nights work, and left me screaming "PUT SOME BLOODY EMOTION INTO IT" during one particular scene of a police interview. It also suffers from incidents of poor writing, things are often left unexplained (such as why DuShane is in Jamaica) and there are numerous plot holes (albeit mostly minor in nature), some character arca also do not make sense, such as how the lesbian girl rose so high. On the other hand, Dave gives a strong performance as Modie, and undoubtedly has a future in acting. The tragic arc of Jason is as poignant and hard hitting as the previous series (one of the best scenes was Gem, Sully and Jason playing with fireworks on a beach) and overall a great sub plot.

Overall, the new Top Boy is good, but not great, and is far from the sheer quality of writing and rawness of the original. I must say that it improves as it goes on and I did find it gripping, however, it does lot live up to its predecessor

Top Boy can be bleak and violent, with dialogue so naturalistic that it verges on the impenetrable, but in telling stories that rarely get heard, it asks us to think differently about the city we live in. Drake has done British viewers a favour. We can thank him later.

A beautifully paced and powerful return. Bennett’s tight, compassionate scripts touch on everything from the impact of Brexit to the increased presence of immigration officers without ever forgetting that this is at heart a story about a community and the ties that bind filled with believable, beautifully written characters, many of whom may well break your heart.

For all of Top Boy’s gloom and heavy portent – during almost every scene, you wonder what terrible fate will befall the character in it – there are moments of dry humour. ... It is not a flattering portrait of our times, but as a TV drama, it is up there with the best – tense, gripping and relentless.
