I thought it was a rather bizarre story, but had no idea how insane it truly was, until I watched the documentary series on Netflix. He was also known as the Tiger King, because he lauded over a zoo with hundreds of big cats and other animals. It was open to the public for gawking, and more importantly, to sell the opportunity to pet cubs. Joe is an outspoken, trash-talking, openly-gay, gun-toting redneck with a mullet. An astoundingly assured and completely irrational character. Each episode in the 8-part series sets up a different aspect of his ongoing conflicts with the owner of another animal park and the leader of Big Cat Rescue that specializes in saving tigers who have been raised in captivity. Each episode also reveals new aspects of the story that seem more incredible than the last. The parade of unusual characters and the timeline of outrageous events is highly entertaining (although the episodes could have been shorter). This is an mind-blowing example that truth is truly stranger than anyone could have written. Expand

This documentary turns Trainspotting into... a magical ride at Disney?
Everyone is insane? The documentary makers likely cleared millions from Netflix - making them infinitely more evil than even their horrific subjects? Everyone just scores $$$$ off the endless misery, and we're ALL contributing? Have someone just drop a wild tiger into the mix? All of the parks are then closed, all of the owners and handlers dead or horrifically maimed? PLEASE have the tigers rise up and just KILL them all!?! NOW!!! The beautiful wild animals draw in the abused cults that then draw us ALL into this evil? I’ve never shot heroin. I did watch this documentary. And now I really hate myself. And that photo of me as a child, hugging the cute lion cub? I'm definitely going to Hell.

Beginning with a shock and awe that is unfortunately dragged out to the point of familiarity, Tiger King is a well composed and thought provoking docuseries that excels at taking deep dive into many characters points of views.

This is a really cool long form documentary that needs to be seen to be believed. Very much in the vein of other true crime shows that Netflix has done.

Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.

This was the quickest binge watch of a documentary I've watched in awhile. It just kept getting chaotic as it went along. Everyone in this is either a scumbag or incredibly shady. There's only two sides to people. I guess if you can control animals, you can control people as well.

I wasn't sure if I should laugh or be disturbed, so I did both. Also I think Carole Baskin really did feed her husband to tigers. I'm getting an O. J. Simpson vibe from her.

Sure it’s manipulative as hell pushing the redneck hillbilly semi sneer but so what. Who knows what is actually true?
And if you’re interested in knowing all the nooks and crannies of this bizarre story and the unbelievable people involved in it then I suppose you should do your own research, which many people have. Everyone is pretty awful including the so-called simple employees who I think they want us to sympathize with but are too gullible to deserve much empathy in reality. The animals get a bit lost in the story which is a shame but besides that, this is compulsive.
Miles better than anything produced by Netflix in the fiction department. This is where netflix does its best work.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This documentary is absolutely insane and I loved it. Tiger King has no equal and I've yet to see anything ever come close to it's insanity.

With the show having a cast of homosexual gun touting rednecks, sex cult leading egomaniacs and self-righteous egocentrics that are possible murders. You'd need nothing else to make a off the walls documentary but nope that's just the tip of the iceberg. Throw in big cats, other exotic animals, drugs and many other unbelievable variables. You've got one the wildest documentaries ever made.

I got until the end because I don't like to leave things unfinished but I think three good centered hours would've been more than enough.

Such a name to this series and popularity around it for a reason.

All thanks to the main character Joe Schraibfogel-Maldonado-Passage, or, in simple, as he calls himself Joe Exotic. Joe - a man who a little went on his head, (but nothing - that's what gave the popularity of the series, because not every day you see this in the series with real footage), was the owner of one of the largest zoos for cats But ... exactly until the moment when someone looked at him obliquely, and his whole business of life went downhill in a short time. At the very beginning, the events developed quietly, without hurrying. Joe had a feud with a woman named Carol, who also has a zoo. The feud began because they had disagreements. According to Carol, Joe is only engaged in the deterioration of animal life, and, nothing more, and he believes that everything is quite the opposite.

The two of us were getting worse and worse.

Over time, Carol and Joe appeared as new friends, and enemies, and adventures, in the bad sense of the word.

Everyone in front of the camera had something to say - whether it's Joe or someone else in this story. And each of them had something to add and had something to lose.

"He killed it. And this one... In general... did that!" And so on... But, in the end, the story is gaining new momentum - connects revenge, attempted murder, and the FBI.
The comic is like a fairy tale. Not even a bad story for a movie gunman.

But, unfortunately, all this was true.

Again everyone in history had something to say, everyone, after all, wanted to benefit from this whole situation and come out of it clean and unscathed.

The series shows us exactly what happened in the zoo and in other places before and after the conflict, based on the views of different people and in all the little things.

Those who were for, neutral and against!

Throughout the film, the viewer has time to think about the picture - who is right, who is to blame for this situation? Is someone right in this story?
In conclusion, although this series is a little delayed, and sometimes can be boring, watch it, after all, it is worth it, even if you are not a fan of documentaries, or if you did not like it in the beginning.

You will only understand more how crazy and ruthless our world is, what a man is capable of for his goals and whims...

Joe exotic's racism was cut out for no reason
Did not really focus on the conservation issues with tigers
Basically, it's less documentary and more like reality TV

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Interesting series overall. The first series was clearly better than the second although its still entertaining.
Can't help but feel like the second series lacked as much impact as the first. The first was a very good deep dive into this crazy world, whereas the second seemed like it was just trying to focus on elements that people were interested in from the first.

Series 2 was pretty disjointed, seemed to focused on what ifs (in the case of Baskin) and while there were developments with the Joe case, if feels like they made this documentary before we got any real developments on the case itself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a trainwreck that you can't stop watching. First off, most of the people in Tiger KIng are NOT "good" people. That being said, it's ironic how Joe was one of the "best" of all the characters, but he is the only one to serve prison time. However, Joe is still not a good man, and even though you may like his personality, you still don't necessarily like him as a person. I also liked how they put Carol Baskins in a fair light and didn't treat her like the hero she wants to be but doesn't deserve to be. It's very entertaining, but my biggest complaint with the show is that they purposely made John Finley and a few others look worse than they were AND had zero mention of Finley's victory over drug addiction. They portrayed many of the characters unfairly as "meth addicts," especially Finley when he was clean for years during the interviews. They did this just to spin a narrative and to boost ratings. Also, the Tigers get left out, especially near the end, and the audience may lose sight of the true purpose. It's an 8 for the entertainment, not the story or morals involved. Expand

A mixed bag of emotions throughout the whole show, causing you to alter your views throughout. The story for the main characters isn't over considering missing persons cases have been reopened and petitions to pardon people from jail have been started, all due to the popularity of this show! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think the material was presented just about as well as it could’ve been. And the story is pretty damn interesting. It was never a bore which is commendable for a documentary. There was no point at which I didn’t want to continue and see what would happen next even though I wasn’t sure it would conclude all that astonishingly. I know that the makers of the show couldn’t exactly control the narrative (not exactly) but things weirdly paid off in semi-satisfying ways. We don’t get to see where all the plots end up, like Carole probably having her husband killed or the future of Jeff’s life and assumedly future legal trouble, but for what it’s worth those aren’t questions they realistically could’ve answered without waiting another like 10 years or even more to find out. And in Carole’s case maybe never. At the very least, though, we got to see more or less a conclusion of Joe’s story. Expand

The documentary excels at showcasing the exploits of crazy people, but falls a little flat at making a statement on those exploits. I heard this series compared to Blackfish, in the way it exposed treatment of animals, but I don't believe Tiger King had such a strong thesis. It leans a little more towards reality tv. Not that's a bad thing. What IS a bad thing is the special hosted by Joel McHale. Viewers wanted more of the story, but not from him, not like this. Expand
