    With “Drawn” as evidence, Notaro is one of the most consistently solid standup comedians working today: Always funny, poignant, and pushing the form creatively. Here’s to coloring outside the lines.

    Going with animation not only allows us to visualize Notaro’s funny trips down her own Memory Lane, but also enjoy a lighter take on her interaction with the crowd at Largo (dubbed La Venue in Drawn). ... Notaro may be a notoriously dry comedian, perhaps too dry for some tastes? So this also may be your best chance to see her in a completely new light. Or 11 new lights.

    Notaro’s writing works in an animated context in a way that wouldn’t be true for every comedian. Drawn is delightful, but this is not an invitation for a new surge of animated comedy specials.

    Tig Notaro's Stand-up routine has a lot going for it if you don't need your comedy to be "knock-knock" jokes or uses of cursewords (both ofTig Notaro's Stand-up routine has a lot going for it if you don't need your comedy to be "knock-knock" jokes or uses of cursewords (both of which Tig does not do). Her Comedy stylings are way more subtle than that, and it's often the undertones or what's not said or simply the way she observes life's many pitfalls that make her Comedy special to me. This version, "Drawn" is her doing her standard routine, unchanged and uncut, but with the added twist of not actually seeing her live on stage. All the silly stories and observations, including the protagonist and her audience, are now literally drawn.

    It's a thoroughly enjoyable, different experience to watch what came out of the animator's heads vs. when you watch "Boyish Girl, Interrupted" with animation added on top by different studios in varying styles, from cute to abstract.

    As different studios were handling different pieces of the story the satisfying end result is a very different set of single pieces of animation, which are all top-notch and are fitting in style to the underlining the often ridiculous true-to-life stories and observations they depict. All of them are all perfectly blended together over Tig going throug the routine as the "off voice", to create a wholesome and very much different experience out of it.

    Definitely worth a watch for everyone who has seen Tig Notaro perform - and even more so if you haven't.

    The animation might actually pull you in to listen closely to this brilliant performer telling you about her struggle with Cancer, her thinking abou thow the Kool Aid Pitcher is breaking into our reality (and our walls) and some truly horrible things and everyday observations that nevertheless somehow make you laugh out loud hearing them out of her mouth.    … Full Review »
